Personal Medical History, Family History of Cancer, and the Risk of Soft-Tissue Sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) etiology is largely undefined. METHODS: We analyzed data from an Italian case-control study, including 498 incident, histologically confirmed STS cases and 969 hospital controls. Odds ratios (OR) of STS for self-reported personal medical history and family history of cancer were estimated using Firth penalized logistic regression models. RESULTS: STS risk was significantly increased with a history of burns [OR, 2.46; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-5.47] and showed a nonsignificant excess with herpes zoster infection (OR, 2.31; 95% CI, 0.65-8.23). Early prenatal diagnosis of causative homozygous variants in ASCC1 in a fetus with cystic hygroma and additional homozygous variants of unknown significance associated with a neurological phenotype not visible in early gestation: Dual diagnosis or not?

A consanguineous couple was referred at 10 weeks of gestation (WG) for prenatal genetic investigations due to isolated cystic hygroma. Prenatal trio exome sequencing identified causative homozygous truncating variants in ASCC1 previously implicated in spinal muscular atrophy with congenital bone fractures. Prenatal manifestations in ASCC1 can usually include hydramnios, fetal hypo-/akinesia, arthrogryposis, contractures and limb deformities, hydrops fetalis and cystic hygroma. An additional truncating variant was identified in CSPP1 associated with Joubert syndrome. Presentations in CSPP1 incl

Finite element analysis of stress allocation for designing different root canal.

It is known that vertical root fractures are influenced by the canal diameter. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the stress distribution in three distinct root canal taper designs using finite element analysis. We used a Hyflex Nickel Titanium (NiTi) rotary file to clean and shape a few lower incisor teeth with single canals. Three designs were developed, including a 4% tapered canal preparation, a 6% tapered canal preparation and an 8% tapered canal preparation. Every tooth sample underwent cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and any stresses were found using finite element anal

Sclerostin and its role as a bone modifying agent in periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a highly prevalent inflammatory disease affecting the periodontium that results from an imbalance between periodontopathogens and host mechanisms. Continuous progression of the disease may lead to tissue and bone destruction, eventually resulting in tooth loss. The extent of bone loss depends on the dysregulated host immune response. Various host-elicited molecules play a major role in disease progression. The discovery of the glycoprotein sclerostin and its role as a regulator of bone mass has led to a better understanding of bone metabolism. HIGHLIGHT: Sclerosti

Influence of surface treatment before glazing on wear and flexural strength of translucent zirconia.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the surface treatment of translucent zirconia prior to glazing affects wear and flexural strength. METHODS: Translucent zirconia disks were either left as-sintered, polished, or sandblasted. Half of the specimens within these three groups were glazed. Human enamel and dentin substrates were prepared as control. The wear volume and depth, as well as surface roughness parameters, were obtained after chewing simulation (n = 8 per group). Biaxial flexural strength of zirconia specimens was measured and fractures were analyzed. Statistics was performed with multifa

Are you sure that ankle is just sprained? A review of common ankle conditions, diagnoses and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute ankle sprains frequently occur in active children and adolescents but may be the initial clinical presentation of other less common disorders affecting the lower extremities. There are many conditions that may cause one or multiple episodes of ankle injury that are misdiagnosed as an acute ankle sprain. This manuscript highlights diagnoses that should be considered when evaluating and managing a child or adolescent who presents initially and/or repeatedly with an acute ankle sprain. RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, various studies have continued to note the prevalenc

Molecular genetics of hereditary sensory neuropathies.

Hereditary sensory neuropathies (HSN), also known as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSAN), are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders. They are caused by neuronal atrophy and degeneration, predominantly affecting peripheral sensory and autonomic neurons. Both congenital and juvenile to adulthood onset is possible. Currently, the classification of the HSN depends on the mode of inheritance, age at onset, and clinical presentation. Hallmark features are progressive sensory loss, chronic skin ulcers, and other skin abnormalities. Spontaneous fractures and ne

Resin bonding to root dentin: influence of the alveolar bone level and thickness of the cement layer.

AIM: Aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the alveolar bone level and thickness of the cement layer on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts luted to root dentin. METHODS: We prepared post spaces in 60 bovine roots (16 mm), embedded in acrylic resin to simulate different scenarios of alveolar bone resorption. They were divided into six groups (N.=10), according to the factors "alveolar bone level" (14, 10, and 7 mm) and "cement thickness" (post no. 3/control and post no. 1/ thicker cement layer): G14P3 - 14-mm root + post n. 3; G10P3 - 10-mm root + post n. 3; G7P3 - 7
