Surveillance and control of tuberculous infection in pediatric patients, especially in those with a contact history, is important to prevent tuberculous infection in the general population. Totally 26 patients, younger than 14 years of age, who had a diagnosis of pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), underwent both chest radiographs and computed tomography (CT), which were retrospectively reviewed and compared with those of 20 patients with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP). TB patients were commonly afebrile and had less cavitating lesions or pleural fluid than CABP patients

The results of surgical treatment were analyzed in 481 patients who had been preoperatively found to have drug resistance. Patients with fibrocavernous, cirrhotic tuberculosis, chronic pleural empyema, and cavernous pneumonia constituted the vast majority (83.2%). Chemotherapy was performed by individual schemes, by taking into account MBT susceptibility. Glutoxim and pentaglobin were used as pathogenetic therapy for immunity correction. Resection-type operations [n = 368 (68.9%)], thorocoplastic interventions [n = 78 (14.6%)], thoracostomy or cavernostomy [n = 35 (6.5%)], pleurectomy [n = 26

We describe 12 patients with simultaneous bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax (SBSP). They represent 4 percent of patients with spontaneous pneumothorax seen at our hospital from 1971 to 1990. Five of the 12 had no underlying lung disease. In the seven remaining patients, SBSP was secondary to histiocytosis X, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, osteogenic sarcoma with pleural and pulmonary metastases, Hodgkin's disease, mesothelioma, cystic fibrosis, or miliary tuberculosis. Nineteen of the 56 patients with SBSP (34 percent) described in the literature (this series included) had pulmonary disease relate

The authors reviewed material of 10 year period (1980-1990) of the Department of Pulmonology, Albert Szent-Györgyi University of Medicine, Deszk, Hungary, and selected 14 patients from the files who considered to belong in one of the lymphoproliferative conditions (4 low grade and 4 high grade lymphomas of B-cell type, 1 angiocentric, 1 mediastinal lymphoblastic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, 3 Hodgkin's lymphoma cases and 1 pleural pseudolymphoma). Every patient admitted with prominent pulmonary symptoms. The diagnoses were based on histology and immunohistochemistry of tissue samples and autopsy. O

To determine the value of chest roentgenograms in the management of asymptomatic persons with positive tuberculin skin test results, we undertook a retrospective review of all tests administered by our Employee Health Service, North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, NY, between July 1, 1983 and November 1, 1987. Of 5200 tests, 247 results were positive. Two hundred twenty-one of these charts were reviewed for roentgenographic results and the presence of symptoms. All persons were asymptomatic. Chest roentgenograms revealed the following: normal, 188; unrelated abnormalities, 24; apical ple

Tuberculostearic acid (TBSA) (10-methyloctadecanoic acid) is a structural component of mycobacteria and is not normally present in human tissues. The detection of this fatty acid in various clinical specimens, such as sputum, bronchial aspirate, pleural fluid and cerebrospinal fluid, is a rapid, sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis. As rapid diagnostic methods are also needed in tuberculous pleurisy, this study was planned on 21 patients with pleurisy. The methods of gas chromatography, mass spectrophotometry combined with selected ion monitoring were used. The patient

Neoplasia in an important cause of rheumatic disease. The mechanisms are either direct infiltration of the bone and joint, or indirect infiltration with manifestations distant from the site of neoplastic involvement. Many of the reports reviewed in this article center on direct associations. In particular, there is a report on polymyositis and dermatomyositis and the link with neoplasia. Cases of reflex sympathetic dystrophy are also described in association with neoplasia. There is further discussion on the link of hairy cell leukemia and vasculitis. Other case reports highlight the multiple

PURPOSE: The optimal choice of protocol for diagnostic imaging in children with tuberculosis (TB) is a contemporary challenge due to the war in Ukraine, which potentially can create a steep rise in TB cases in Western Europe. We aimed to gather all primary research comparing imaging modalities and their diagnostic accuracies for pulmonary findings in children with suspected or confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB).
METHOD: We searched the databases PubMed and Embase using pre-specified search terms, for English- and non-English published and un-published reports from the period 1972 to 2022.

Although the infectious diseases tuberculosis (TB) and cryptococcosis both cause formation of single or multiple nodules in immunodeficient hosts, cases of co-infection of these diseases are rarely seen. We report a patient who was co-infected with TB and cryptococcosis. A male patient with no clinical evidence of immunodeficiency presented with a 3-week history of abdominal distension accompanied by oedema of recurring lower extremities. The patient was diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis and tuberculous pleurisy by an abdominal puncture biopsy. Several months after being treated for TB, t

Pleural space problems can create formidable treatment dilemmas for thoracic surgeons. Most arise as iatrogenic sequelae of lung resections, although some occur as late consequences of infection, hemothorax, or systemic inflammatory disease. Regardless of etiology, a central theme in the development and perpetuation of chronic pleural space problems is that there has been a loss of parietal-visceral pleural apposition, and this has allowed for development of an obligate space. A variety of surgical strategies aimed at reestablishment of pleural apposition and obliteration of pleural space are

We herein report an extremely rare case of a patient with IgD-lambda positive multiple myeloma presenting with myelomatous pleural effusion and ascites. A 58-year-old man visited our hospital with dyspnea as his initial symptom. His chest radiograph findings on admission revealed a left pleural effusion, and later, bilateral involvement. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest showed a paraspinal tumor with extension from the upper mediastinum to the abdomen. The cytological examination demonstrated myeloma cells in the pleural effusion and ascites, and histologically, in the pleura, an abdomina

Two hundred and eighty seven cases of tuberculous pleurisy are analyzed. According to the pleural contents, four phases of development of this disease are identified. These include: 1) free pleurisy; 2) partially encysted pleurisy; 3) encysted pleurisy, and 4) adhesive pleurisy. An algorithm of use of draining procedures and surgical interventions depending on the phase of pleurisy is proposed. Among other things, indications for thoracoscopy that was performed in 66 patients with tuberculous pleurisy for its therapy were stated. Thoracoscopy is ineffective in adhesive pleurisy, in the presenc

Both clinical and radiologic manifestations can have unusual figures in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Infectious involvement, as in particularly tuberculosis, may simulate a neoplasm, and vice versa. We report a case of a tubercular pleuresy followed 14 months later by a lung cancer in a patient infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This observation pose the delicate diagnostic problem of a recurred endobronchial tuberculosis we describe the chest roentgenograms and the computed tomography-scans patterns. We give the place of both of them. We call att

Tuberculosis is one of the most common causes of infertility in underdeveloped countries. In the United States and developed countries, in contrast, it is one of the rarest causes of infertility. A woman with primary infertility was diagnosed with extensive genital and intraperitoneal tuberculosis by laparoscopic exploration, and culture of tubercules and peritoneal fluid. The tubercules covered the viscera so extensively that it was impossible to identify the organs. Antituberculosis treatment almost completely resolved the disease.

The paper reports on the indications and results obtained, in the study of 224 autonomous or associated pleural pulmonary decortications. The decortication is aimed at removing the chronic pleural sack and the possible parenchymatous lesions and at the recovery of the maximum functional pulmonary parenchyma. For the recently chronic cases, the authors suggest the early surgical indication; the pleural pulmonary decortication is better achieved technically and gives better lesional and functional results if it is made earlier; the optimum operatory moment of the decortication superimposes on th
