Adapting the Grog survey app for alcohol screening and feedback in aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services: a mixed methods study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Routine use of brief, structured screening tools is essential to detect and provide support for Australians who drink above recommended levels. However, detecting drinking above recommended levels in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian primary care settings is complex. Inaccuracies in completing a screening tool such as Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption, can lead to errors in estimating drinking in First Nations contexts where group sharing and episodic drinking make it difficult to accurately estimate alcohol consumption with tools that assume re

Real-time multicenter semantic segmentation for laparoscopic gastrectomy: development, external validation and operating room deployment of an AI navigation system.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic gastrectomy is technically demanding and errors often arise from limited situational awareness. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer vision may enhance intraoperative recognition of instruments and anatomy, but evidence for generalizable, real-time deployment remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter study using laparoscopic gastrectomy videos from 4 tertiary hospitals. Data were split by institution into training, internal test, and external validation sets. A You Only Look Once version 10 (YOLOv10)-based model was developed to recognize 18 categori

Virtual High-Throughput Screening To Identify Novel Activin Antagonists.

Activin belongs to the TGFβ superfamily, which is associated with several disease conditions, including cancer-related cachexia, preterm labor with delivery, and osteoporosis. Targeting activin and its related signaling pathways holds promise as a therapeutic approach to these diseases. A small-molecule ligand-binding groove was identified in the interface between the two activin βA subunits and was used for a virtual high-throughput in silico screening of the ZINC database to identify hits. Thirty-nine compounds without significant toxicity were tested in two well-established activin assays:

Expanding the range of free calcium regulation in biological solutions.

Many biological systems use ethylene glycol bis (beta-aminoethylether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) to regulate the free calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](free)) in the presence of physiological levels of free Mg(2+) ([Mg(2+)](free)). Frequently, it is necessary to work at [Ca(2+)](free) beyond EGTA's buffering capabilities. Therefore, we have developed methods to extend the buffering range by adding nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) to solutions containing EGTA. This extension results from NTA having a lower K'(dCa) than EGTA. Such equilibria are solved by pCa Calculator, a computer program desi

Novel Encoding and Decoding Methods for Enhancing Short-Time High-Frequency VR-SSVEP Performance.

Virtual reality (VR) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) face a critical challenge: achieving high information transfer rates (ITR) requires short time windows, while user comfort necessitates high-frequency stimulation. Decoding this high-frequency and short-time combination is highly challenging due to low signal-to-noise ratios. To address this, we applied the independent visual field stimulation (IVFS) paradigm to encode six high frequency targets (31-36 Hz) using three common encoding designs. Furthermore, we propose a novel Inter-cla

ChatBCI-4-ALS: A High-Performance, LLM-Driven, Intent-Based BCI Communication System for Individuals with ALS.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to significant motor and speech impairments, increasing the need for alternative means of communication to support quality of life. P300 speller brain computer interfaces (BCIs) have shown promise in facilitating non-muscular communication by detecting P300 event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to visual stimuli. However, these systems are generally slow and can not fully address the communication needs of ALS patients, specially, when the primary goal is to convey intent with minimal cognitive load. In this pa

The role of eye movement signals in non-invasive brain-computer interface typing system.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have shown great potential in providing communication and control for individuals with severe motor disabilities. However, traditional BCIs that rely on electroencephalography (EEG) signals suffer from low information transfer rates and high variability across users. Recently, eye movement signals have emerged as a promising alternative due to their high accuracy and robustness. Eye movement signals are the electrical or mechanical signals generated by the movements and behaviors of the eyes, serving to denote the diverse forms of eye movements, such as fixatio

Low-Cost Dynamometer for Measuring and Regulating Wrist Extension and Flexion Motor Tasks in Electroencephalography Experiments.

A brain-computer interface could control a bionic hand by interpreting electroencephalographic (EEG) signals associated with wrist extension (WE) and wrist flexion (WF) movements. Misinterpretations of the EEG may stem from variations in the force, speed and range of these movements. To address this, we designed, constructed and tested a novel dynamometer, the IsoReg, which regulates WE and WF movements during EEG recording experiments. The IsoReg restricts hand movements to isometric WE and WF, controlling their speed and range of motion. It measures movement force using a dual-load cell syst
