Labyrinthine fistula detection: the predictive value of vestibular symptoms and computerized tomography.

A retrospective case record study of 20 patients in Oslo operated on for chronic otitis media with labyrinthine fistula between 1986 and 1999 was performed in order to estimate the incidence of, and identify predictors for, labyrinthine fistulas. The incidence of fistula was 0.3 per 100 000, with a median age at diagnosis of 37 years. The median duration of chronic otitis media prior to labyrinthine fistula detection was significantly correlated with age at surgery. Subjective hearing loss (90%), otorrhoea (65%) and dizziness (50%) were presenting symptoms. Modified canal-wall-down mastoidecto

Vestibular habituation is associated with distinct autonomic signatures and greater reduction in visually induced motion sickness: A randomized controlled trial.

This study compared the efficacy of short-duration, high-intensity versus stepwise, progressively lengthened optokinetic drum-chair training in alleviating visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) and modulating autonomic function. Ninety-six VIMS-susceptible university students were randomly assigned to either a short-duration (S-D) group (one training session daily for 3 consecutive days, with each session terminated upon the first report of pronounced nausea) or a stepwise (S-W) group underwent a 6-day graduated protocol (one session daily, duration: 60 s/120 s/180 s). Efficacy was assessed

Inner Ear Complications in Children and Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease.

Hearing impairment is a reported complication of sickle cell disease, yet inner ear pathology is not fully understood. The study purpose was to examine the patterns of inner ear involvement in patients with sickle cell disease by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to assess its association with auditory functions. A cross-sectional study included 22 children with sickle cell disease examined for inner ear pathology by audiogram, MRI inner ear and transcranial Doppler (TCD) with revision of their hospital records for transfusion, chelation and hydroxyurea (HU) therapy. Abnormal MRI in the for

Assessment of visual sensation, psychiatric profile and quality of life following vestibular schwannoma surgery in patients prehabituated by chemical vestibular ablation.

AIMS: Preoperative chemical vestibular ablation can reduce vestibular symptoms in patients who have gone through vestibular schwannoma resection. The goal of this study was to determine whether chemical vestibular prehabituation influences the patients' post-operative perception of visual stimulation, mental status and quality of life. We also tried to find out whether increases of optokinetic nystagmus, measured by routine electronystagmography, correlate with subjective symptoms. METHODS: We preoperatively administered (2 months prior to surgery) 0.5 - 1.0 mL of 40 mg/mL nonbuffered gentami

Objective methods to measure vestibular evoked myogenic potential response saccular tuning curves.

Objective: To detect cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) responses using objective statistical approaches and to apply this approach to estimate saccular frequency-tuning curves in volunteers and Ménière's disease (MD) patients. Design: Estimates of cVEMP threshold were carried out by 3 expert raters at 500 Hz and compared to objective threshold estimates (using Hotelling's T2 [HT2] and Fsp). Saccular tuning curves were objectively estimated. Study sample: Objective and subjective estimates of cVEMP response thresholds were compared for 13 normal hearing adults. Objective mea

Visual contribution to human standing balance during support surface tilts.

Visual position and velocity cues improve human standing balance, reducing sway responses to external disturbances and sway variability. Previous work suggested that human balancing is based on sensory estimates of external disturbances and their compensation using feedback mechanisms (Disturbance Estimation and Compensation, DEC model). This study investigates the visual effects on sway responses to pseudo-random support surface tilts, assuming that improvements result from lowering the velocity threshold in a tilt estimate and the position threshold in an estimate of the gravity disturbance.

Intravestibular space occupying lesions of lipoma and schwannoma.

Intravestibular lipoma (IVL) and intravestibular schwannoma (IVS) are rare tumors occupying the intravestibular space. Patients with IVL or IVS complain of hearing impairment, tinnitus or recurrent rotatory vertigo. Therefore, the clinical practitioner could misdiagnose them as sudden sensorineural hearing loss or Meniere's disease. Since delayed diagnosis and treatment could lead to more severe and refractory symptoms, clinicians should have a high index of suspicion for early diagnosis. Recent advancements in imaging diagnostic tools such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

An observed relationship between vestibular function and auditory thresholds in aircraft-maintenance workers.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the vestibular function and whether an association exists between vestibular function and hearing thresholds in a group of military aircraft-maintenance workers with exposures to high levels of noise and organic solvents, relative to two different comparison groups. METHODS: Vestibular function (using functional reach) and hearing (with pure-tone audiometry) were assessed in 601 exposed personnel, compared with two unexposed groups (500 technical trade and 391 nontrade). RESULTS: Linear regression model showed that functional reach was slightly better for the
