The prevalence of probable sarcopenia and intrinsic capacity impairment among a group of community-dwelling older people in an urban area in Cameroon.

Although intrinsic capacity serves as an indirect measure of an individual's functional reserve, whether and in which way it interacts with sarcopenia is still to be addressed in Cameroon. This study aimed to describe the relationship between probable sarcopenia and domains of intrinsic capacity among older people in Cameroon. This cross-sectional study included community-dwelling older aged ≥ 60 years from two senior citizen's association in Cameroon. Probable sarcopenia was assessed using grip strength and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Screening for intrinsic capacity(IC) impair

Economic evaluations of eye care services for Indigenous populations in high-income countries: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous people in high-income countries have worse eye health outcomes when compared to non-Indigenous people, contributing to ongoing socioeconomic disadvantage. Although services have been designed to address these disparities, it is unclear if they have undergone comprehensive economic evaluation. Our scoping review aimed to identify the number, type, quality, and main findings of such evaluations. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library Database, the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database, EconLit, and relevant grey literature were systemati

[Optometric eye screening in schools : First results of a pilot project on logistical feasibility].

BACKGROUND: We present a pilot project to improve eye health in schoolchildren: annual optometric screening with a focus on early detection of school myopia. The logistical proof-of-concept is illustrated by way of a pilot project at a state high school in North Rhine-Westphalia. The collected biometric parameters also contribute to the collection of epidemiological data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: On organized examination days objective and subjective refractions of schoolchildren in grades 5-7 (ages 9-16 years) were determined, children were tested for abnormalities in binocular vision and the p

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions in very preterm infants: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm infants are at a greater risk of developing neurodevelopmental impairments such as neuro-motor delays, vision and hearing deficits (Roze and Breart, 2004; Saigal and Doyle, 2008) [1,2]. The hearing difficulties in preterm infants vary depending on the co-morbid conditions. However, prematurity itself is considered as a risk factor that influence the functioning of auditory system. AIM: The current study aims to compare the DPOAEs in very preterm infants and term infants at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months of age (corrected age in preterm infants). METHOD: DPOAEs were r

Health conditions that impact fitness-to-practice in physicians: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: It has been over 50 years since health conditions in physicians were first suggested to affect their fitness-to-practice, with consequent impacts on patient safety and patient care. Recent policy positions from physician regulatory bodies express a desire for clarity regarding the impact of these health conditions alongside their standardization in physician regulatory processes. Furthermore, these conditions have not been fully enumerated. Therefore, this scoping review intended to find all health conditions which were identified in the literature to impact physician fitness-to-pr

Does Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Treatment Influence Patient Falls and Mobility? A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of irreversible blindness, increases fall risk through impaired central vision. Falls place an enormous economic burden on healthcare systems. We hypothesized that AMD treatments may reduce patients' falls risk. This systematic review (ID #: 172623) synthesized the current understanding of wet and dry AMD treatments' impact on patient falls and mobility, connecting these two public health issues. METHODS: On April 17, 2020, PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were queried. Clinical tria

Medical problems of foreign-born adopted children.

Over 8000 foreign-born children, almost all from third-world countries, are adopted by citizens of the United States each year. Most primary care practitioners do not have enough experience to evaluate and manage their problems efficiently. We reviewed the medical care of the foreign-born adoptees followed up in a single pediatric group practice. The 128 children arrived from one of eight countries in Asia or Latin America at ages ranging from 1 month to 10 years; 57% were female. The median duration of follow-up was 20 months. The most common problems identified included deficient immunizatio

A Rare Event Causing Blindness in an Unrecognised Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Purtscher-like retinopathy (PLR) is a rare, non-traumatic microembolic angiopathy characteristically associated with systemic endothelial conditions, including pre-eclampsia. While PLR typically exhibits a self-limiting course with a highly favourable visual prognosis, severe cases result in permanent, treatment-refractory blindness. We present a catastrophic, atypical case of bilateral PLR in an unrecognised pregnancy without any antenatal care. A 31-year-old primigravida without prior antenatal screening presented with a three-day history of sudden, bilateral central blurry vision and was ne

Enhanced adenoma detection with Endocuff Vision: a GRADE assessed systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths and the third most common cancer worldwide. Detecting adenomas during colonoscopy reduces the CRC risk, with higher adenoma detection rates (ADRs) correlating with lower CRC incidence and mortality. Endocuff Vision (EV) enhances mucosal visualization and may improve ADRs. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched through April 2025 for studies comparing EV-assisted and standard colonoscopy.
