Multiplicity of Plasmodium falciparum infection in asymptomatic children in Senegal: relation to transmission, age and erythrocyte variants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living in malaria endemic areas generally harbour multiple parasite strains. Multiplicity of infection (MOI) can be an indicator of immune status. However, whether this is good or bad for the development of immunity to malaria, is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to examine the MOI in asymptomatic children between two and ten years of age and to relate it to erythrocyte variants, clinical attacks, transmission levels and other parasitological indexes. METHODS: Study took place in Niakhar area in Senegal, where malaria is mesoendemic and seasonal. Three hundre

The role of red blood cell polymorphisms in resistance and susceptibility to malaria.

In regions highly endemic for Plasmodium falciparum malaria, red cell polymorphisms that confer resistance to severe disease are widespread. Sickle cell trait, alpha-thalassemia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, and blood groups were determined in 100 children from Gabon with severe malaria who were matched with 100 children with mild malaria and followed up for evaluation of reinfections. The sickle cell trait was significantly associated with mild malaria and blood group A with severe malaria. During follow-up, the original severe cases had significantly higher rates of reinfect

ABO blood group, secretor status and detection of Helicobacter pylori among patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers.

Patients (454) referred for gastroscopy to the General Hospital of Athens were examined to determine (1) if non-secretors were over-represented among patients with ulcers and (2) if there was an association with ABO blood group or secretor status and carriage of Helicobacter pylori. Compared with the local population, among patients with either gastric ulcer (51) or duodenal ulcer (96) there was a significant increase in the proportion of those who were blood group O (P less than 0.025); however, there were no significant differences in the proportions of non-secretors. H. pylori was identifie

Diagnosis and treatment of the immune hemolytic anemias.

Immune hemolytic anemia can be treated by blood transfusion, steroids, cytotoxic drugs, plasmapheresis, and splenectomy. However, the benefits of therapy are dependent upon the relationship of treatment to the etiology of disease. Thus, effective therapy requires sufficient diagnostic precision to distinguish between allogeneic and autologous antibodies, recognize the etiologic role of immunogenic drugs, and define the immunoglobulin classes of both cold and warm reactive autoantibodies along with their complement interactions.

Beyond two alleles: multiallelic genotypic selection and its estimation from time-series data.

Genetic diversity is central to evolutionary change, with both natural selection and random genetic drift depending on variation within a population. An individual in a diploid population carries two alleles per locus, yet the population as a whole can harbour many alleles, giving rise to a rich spectrum of homozygous and heterozygous genotypes. Such multiallelic variation is common at biologically and medically important loci such as the major histocompatibility complex, the ABO blood group system, and genes underlying monogenic diseases. However, much of population genetic theory and data an

Duffy and kidd genotyping facilitates pretransfusion testing in patients undergoing long-term transfusion therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional serologic typing of red blood cell systems other than ABO and RhD can be inaccurate and difficult to interpret in patients who have recently undergone blood transfusion. While molecular-based assays are not used routinely, the usefulness of genotyping was investigated in order to determine patients who may benefit from this procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples were taken from 101 patients with haemato-oncological, chronic renal, or gastroenterological diseases and from 50 donor controls; the samples were tested for Fya and Fyb by applying serologic and genet

ABO blood group is associated with response to inhaled nitric oxide in neonates with respiratory failure.

BACKGROUND: Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) reduces death or need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). However, the response to iNO is variable and only 50-60% of infants demonstrate a response to iNO. It is not known why only some infants respond to iNO. Adults and children with blood groups B or AB do not respond as well to iNO as those with blood groups O/A. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To determine if blood group was associated with iNO response in newborn infants, a retrospective medical record review was done o

Distribution of HbS, HbC variants, ABO blood groups in relation to malaria infection among Saudi children in Jazan region.

Plasmodium falciparum remains a major public health challenge in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. This study investigated the influence of haemoglobin variants and ABO blood groups on malaria susceptibility, severity, and immune response among Saudi children. A total of 587 children were classified into malaria-free controls (MFC, n = 196), uncomplicated malaria (UM, n = 215), and severe malaria (SM, n = 176). Blood samples were analysed for P. falciparum infection, haemoglobin genotypes, ABO blood groups, and IgG levels using PCR, ELISA. The median age was 4 years for MFC and UM groups, and 5

Potential Association of IL1B Polymorphism With Iron Deficiency Risk in Childhood Helicobacter pylori Infection.

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori infection occurs predominantly in childhood. Host immune response gene polymorphism is reported to affect the susceptibility to H pylori infection and the outcome of H pylori-related gastric cancer. Not all H pylori-infected patients, however, exhibit iron deficiency (ID). The relationship between host genetic polymorphisms and ID mediated by H pylori infection is not well understood. METHODS: Subjects (n = 644) from the general population of age 10 to 18 years were divided into 2 groups based on serology testing for anti-H pylori IgG: seropositive study group;

Risk of venous thrombosis in persons with increased body mass index and interactions with other genetic and acquired risk factors.

UNLABELLED: Essentials Obesity, factor V Leiden (FVL) and blood group non-O are common. We studied the combined effect of these factors on the risk of venous thrombosis (VT). The combination of obesity, non-O blood group and FVL increased VT risk up to ten-fold. Identifying high VT may be beneficial in thrombosis prevention. SUMMARY: Background Overweight/obesity has a substantial effect on the occurrence of venous thrombosis (VT). Blood group non-O has a high prevalence in Western populations, and the factor V Leiden mutation could be present in 5% of Caucasians. These frequent prothrombotic

Incidence of acute transfusion reactions and associated factors among adult blood-transfused patients at Jimma University Medical Center, southwest Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

Acute transfusion reaction is mainly related to the infusion of blood or blood products resulting at any time within a day of the intervention. It ranges from a non-specific febrile episode to a life-threatening intravascular hemolysis. The severity of the reaction and the degree of morbidity are usually related to the degree of ABO incompatibility and the volume of blood transfused. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the incidence of acute transfusion reactions and its associated factors in Jimma University Medical Center, southwest Ethiopia. Institution-based cross-sectional study was

Blood loss control with two doses of tranexamic Acid in a multimodal protocol for total knee arthroplasty.

Average blood loss after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) usually ranges from 1500 to 1900 cc, including both the postoperative drain and hidden blood loss. This represents about 46% of TKA patients requiring postoperative blood transfusion. Not only the risks of disease transmission but also those of ABO incompatibility, infection due to immunosupression, increased procedure costs, and increased length of hospital stay, are potential problems that foster blood saving strategies. In this study, 71 unilateral TKAs using a multimodal protocol to decrease blood loss were compared to 61 historical ca

Effect of leukocyte compatibility on neutrophil increment after transfusion of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized prophylactic granulocyte transfusions and on clinical outcomes after stem cell transplantation.

The primary limitations of granulocyte transfusions include low component cell dose and leukocyte incompatibility. Component cell dose improved with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilization, and the transfusion of G-CSF-mobilized, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched granulocyte components resulted in significant, sustained absolute neutrophil count (ANC) increments. However, the effect of leukocyte compatibility on outcomes with G-CSF-mobilized granulocyte transfusions is unclear. The objectives were to determine the effect of leukocyte compatibility on ANC increments and s

In vitro induction of a diphtheria toxoid specific antibody response in human peripheral blood lymphocytes cultivated in the presence of diphtheria toxoid.

In comparison with the presently used potency test for diphtheria vaccine, in vitro examination of the immunogenicity of the vaccine would have great advantages. For this reason in vitro induction of diphtheria toxoid specific antibody synthesis in human peripheral blood lymphocytes cultivated in the presence of diphtheria toxoid was investigated. The results showed that a dose dependent synthesis of diphtheria antibody was induced by adsorbed diphtheria toxoid and combined vaccines containing the diphtheria toxoid component. Plain diphtheria toxoid appeared to be less immunogenic in compariso

Migration of fully covered self-expandable metallic stents used to treat anastomotic strictures after orthotopic liver transplantation: A single-center, retrospective analysis.

Insertion of a fully covered self-expandable metallic stent (FCEM) through endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is an effective solution for biliary anastomotic stricture following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). However, FCEM migration continues to plague patients. This study aimed to evaluate the FCEM migration rate in our center, and to investigate the factors increasing the migration risk for FCEM.The study enrolled 43 post-OLT patients with confirmed duct-to-duct AS. The effects of age, gender, albumin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), γ-glutam

Dataset of single nucleotide polymorphisms of immune-associated genes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected nations globally leading to illness, death, and economic downturn. Why disease severity, ranging from no symptoms to the requirement for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, varies between patients is still incompletely understood. Consequently, we aimed at understanding the impact of genetic factors on disease severity in infection with SARS-CoV-2. Here, we provide data on demographics, ABO blood group, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type, as well as next-generation sequencing data of genes in the natural killer cell receptor family, the renin-angiotensin-a
