Verbascum thapsus (V. thpsus), family Scrophulariaceae, has considerable importance in traditional medicine worldwide because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. V. thpsus was used in traditional medicines as a useful drug for lung disease, sore throat, wound healing, and treatment of whooping cough. The aim of this study was to extract of V. thpsus bioactive fraction using antibacterial assay guided fractionation methodology and develop a system based on electrospun nanofibrous membrane (NFM) that can be effective by releasing the extract of V. thapsus for antibacterial and w

Based on the technical methods of GB/T 42430-2023 and GA/T 204-2019, this study established an analytical method for headspace injection double-column dual-detector (hydrogen flame ion detector) gas chromatography for the simultaneous analysis of at least 12 volatile compounds, including ethanol, in human blood using two different equipment platforms and chromatographic columns. A 100 μL blood or urine sample and a 0.04 g/L tert-butanol working solution prepared as an internal standard are introduced into the headspace sample bottle and then sealed, mixed, and placed on the headspace sampler r

The incidence of multiple-organ cancers has recently increased due to simultaneous exposure to various environmental carcinogens. Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (H. cordata) is recognized for its many health benefits, including its anti-cancer properties. The fermentation of its leaves has been shown to significantly enhance the bioflavonoid content and its bioactivities. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of fermented H.cordata leaf (FHCL) extracts against combined carcinogens and investigate the underlying mechanisms. The crude ethanolic extract of FHCL was partitioned to obtain hexan

BACKGROUND: India has the highest incidence worldwide of smokeless tobacco (SLT)-associated oral cancer, accounting for nearly 70% of all SLT users globally. Nicotine and tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNA) play critical roles in the addictive and carcinogenic potential, respectively, of SLT products. Our group has previously reported substantial variability in nicotine and TSNA levels across a small SLT product sample in India, calling for systematic surveillance. However, there is no information available on the current levels of these constituents in Indian SLT.
METHODS: We analysed 321

Background: Melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), a receptor of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), is exclusively present in melanocytes where α-MSH/MC1R stimulate melanin pigmentation through microphthalmia-associated transcription factor M (MITF-M). Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a receptor of endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is distributed in immune and other cell types including melanocytes where LPS/TLR4 activate transcriptional activity of nuclear factor (NF)-κB to express cytokines in innate immunity. LPS/TLR4 also up-regulate MITF-M-target melanogenic genes in melanocytes. Here, we p

Background: The star fruit [Averrhoa carambola L (Oxalidaceae)] is traditionally used in the treatment of many ailments in many countries. It possesses several pharmacological activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, it contains the neurotoxic caramboxin and its high content of oxalic acid limits its consumption by individuals with compromised kidney function. This study assessed the anti-hyperlipidemic and antioxidant activities of different fractions of the methanolic extract of A. carambola leaves (MEACL). Methods: The antioxidant activity was investigated u

BACKGROUND: Hand nicotine (HN) levels measure children's exposure to tobacco smoke pollutants from thirdhand and secondhand smoke. HN is associated with urinary and salivary cotinine, but the associations of HN with other tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) markers remain unknown.
OBJECTIVES: We compared levels of HN and four urinary TSE biomarkers: cotinine, trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (3HC), nicotelline N-oxides, and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL), and children's sociodemographic and TSE patterns. We also examined if HN is a plausible pathway for children's exposure to active sm

A comparative study was conducted among the flesh (SOF) and pericarp (SOP) of Stauntonia obovatifoliola, a wild edible fruit in China. The nutrient composition of both these tissues was firstly quantified, and liquid-liquid extraction was then used to separate their methanolic extracts to get petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and residual aqueous fractions, which were evaluated for their total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant capacities, and α-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase inhibition abilities. Finally, high-performance liquid chromat

Arctium minus (Hill) Bernh. (Asteraceae), which has a wide distribution area in Turkey, is a medicinally important plant. Eighty percent methanol extracts of the leaf, flower head, and root parts of A. minus were prepared and their sub-fractions were obtained. Spectrophotometric and chromatographic (high-performance liquid chromatography) techniques were used to assess the phytochemical composition. The extracts were evaluated for antioxidant activity by diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil radical (DPPH●), 2,2'-Azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS●+) radical scavenging, and β-carotene

E. humifusa Willd, a monoecious annual plant, native to Eastern Asia, has been traditionally attributed to the treatment and prevention of miscellaneous diseases, including diabetes mellitus and its associated complications. Earlier studies have supported this species' pharmacological efficacies including its antibacterial, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Even so, the underlying bioactive components with their mechanisms of action associated with its antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory effects remain elusive. The preamble in vitro assessments of the crude extract and its differe

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Carica papaya leaf juice/decoction has been in use in folk medicine in Srilanka, Malaysia and in few parts of India for enhancing the platelet counts in dengue. In Siddha medicine, a traditional form of medicine in India, papaya leaf juice has been used for increasing the platelet counts. Papaya leaf has been reported to enhance blood volume in ancient Ayurveda books in India. Carica papaya leaf is well known for its platelet enhancement activity. Although many preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the ability of papaya leaf juice for platelet enhan

Admittedly, the disastrous emergence of drug resistance in prokaryotic and eukaryotic human pathogens has created an urgent need to develop novel chemotherapeutic agents. Onosma chitralicum is a source of traditional medicine with cooling, laxative, and anthelmintic effects. The objective of the current research was to analyze the biological potential of Onosma chitralicum, and to isolate and characterize the chemical constituents of the plant. The crude extracts of the plant prepared with different solvents, such as aqueous, hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol, were subjected to an

INTRODUCTION: Plant extracts are used to treat illnesses, promote health, and maintain general well-being in traditional medicine. Grewia mollis Juss (Malvaceae) is one of the medicinal herbs that is used traditionally to treat chronic diseases and related pain because currently used anti-inflammatory drugs may cause severe side effects, and naturally occurring compounds with reduced cytotoxicity could be explored for therapeutic goals.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dried leaf of G. mollis was extracted with aqueous and organic solvents and partitioned based on polarity using solvent-solvent methods
