Studies of experimental infection of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus, with the virulent Sheila Smith (R type) and the avirulent Si 7 (U type) strains of Rickettsia rickettsii were undertaken to evaluate the role of this native wild mammal in the ecology of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The Sheila Smith strain, which was highly lethal for guinea pigs, was nonpathogenic for cotton rats. This paper describes a research on Brucella ovis infection in rams in the Pirot Municipality of South Serbia. A positive result with indirect immunoenzyme test (i-ELISA) was confirmed in 67 (29.8%) and suspicious in 31 (13.8%) out of 225 tested rams. Complement fixation test (CFT) was used as a confirmation test on 67 ELISA positive sera and gave positive reaction in 41 (61.2%) ram serum samples. Serologic testing is an important adjunct in the diagnosis and management of syphilis. In this review, the various currently used serologic tests, both non-treponemal and treponemal, are considered. Special emphasis is placed on their relative advantages, applications, and limitations. Conditions under which these tests may be falsely positive are discussed. A cross-sectional study was conducted in south Wollo zone, north east Ethiopia between October, 2008 and March, 2009 aimed at determining the sero-prevalence and to identify potential risk factors of ovine brucellosis. A total of 800 sheep were sampled from two districts, Kalu and Harbu. All sheep above six months of age with no history of previous vaccination against brucellosis were selected. A 41-year-old man who habitually slept in a car park presented with a culture-negative endocarditis. Serological tests indicated infection with both Coxiella burneti and Chlamydia psittaci. He was treated with doxycycline and clindamycin and required aortic valve replacement. Culture of the excised value for both agents was negative but electron microscopy was suggestive of coxiella endocarditis.
