Reduction of aflatoxin contamination in maize kernels mediated by host-induced gene silencing.

Aflatoxins produced by some species of Aspergillus pose a significant threat to global food safety, because they contaminate a variety of crops including maize. In this study, we used host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) to reduce aflatoxin accumulation in maize upon infection with Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Two RNAi constructs were designed and introduced into maize, one targeting two essential fungal genes involved in ergosterol biosynthesis (CYP51A and CYP51B) and the other targeting three aflatoxin biosynthesis genes (AflC, AflD, and AflR). The presence of RNAi transgene

Assessing the toxicity of pesticide inert ingredients and spray adjuvant principal functioning agents to honey bees (Apis mellifera).

Commercial beekeepers transport colonies across the United States to provide pollination services for >100 crops, especially for almond production in California. In these agricultural settings, honey bees are exposed to adjuvant compounds that are either included as "inert ingredients" in pesticide formulations or added as a separate adjuvant product to pesticides to improve application characteristics. However, evidence suggests that some of these inert ingredients pose risks to bees. This study used a Potter spray tower to determine the 48-hr acute toxicities (lethal concentration 50) of 37

Aluminum stress responses and beneficial bacterial traits in Medicago legumes.

Legumes of the genus Medicago are agronomically important forage crops that also enhance soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation. Beyond their agricultural value, Medicago species show promise for the ecological restoration of degraded soils, particularly through their symbiotic associations with soil microbial communities (rhizobacteria). However, in acidic soils-common in degraded environments-the presence of toxic metals such as aluminum (Al) poses a major constraint to plant establishment and microbial functioning. However, the specific impacts of Al stress on each symbiotic pa

Revisiting plant-microbe interaction mechanisms for developing efficient biostimulants.

The diverse and often complex challenges arising from climate change, severe soil degradation and agricultural intensification due to increased use of synthetic agrochemicals, have exacerbated the need for sustainable agricultural systems that can sustain crop productivity with less reliance on agrochemicals. Plant microbe interactions really help in this transition as they influence plant growth, nutrient access, adaptation to stress, and defense against pathogens. Plants interact with many belowground microbes in the rhizosphere through an incredibly diverse set of root exudates that act as

Scoring pesticide-likeness of organic compounds via explainable one-class machine learning.

Pesticides, especially eco-friendly biopesticides, are indispensable for crops protection and food security. In this work, we propose a scoring framework to screen or repurpose existing organic compounds, natural products and pharmaceutical drugs as sustainable agrochemicals. This scoring strategy adopts one-class support vector machine (OCSVM) as base learner to capture the patterns of pharmacophore-relevant fragments of organic compounds exhibiting pesticidal effects, in which only pesticides are required as training data, and the uncertainty and error-proneness of conventional sampling of n
