The role of Malassezia furfur adherence to human stratum corneum cells in vitro was studied. The adherence assay was performed with one strain of M. furfur and stratum corneum cells from 30 healthy individuals and from 28 patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis. Stratum corneum cells from patients with seborrhoeic dermatitis contained significantly lower numbers of adherent M. furfur cells than cells from healthy individuals. Prevalence and severity of seborrhoeic dermatitis were studied in 150 patients with psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety and organic mental illness. As a control group, we examined 150 patients waiting for surgery and regarded as obviously anxious. Thirty-eight psychiatric patients were found to have seborrhoeic dermatitis, versus 13 in the surgery group. This statistically significant difference was entirely ascribable to patients with depression.

Stool samples of patients suffering from seborrheic eczema of the scalp, psoriasis capitis, or seborrhiasis were investigated. Results of the isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid, Ro 4-3780) German Cooperative Study Group, with 198 acne conglobata patients being treated in 19 departments are reported. For the first 12 weeks (phase I) there was an open assignment to 0.2, 0.5 or 1.0 mg/kilogram bodyweight (kg bw). This was followed by further 12 weeks (phase II). If there was at least a two-third improvement of lesions, the 0.2 mg/kg bw was continued, and the 0.5 mg/kg bw dose lowered to 0.2 mg/kg bw. The role of microorganisms in dandruff was studied, by suppressing individually and then collectively the three major components of the scalp microflora. The effect on dandruff was assessed subjectively by clinical grading and objectively by the corneocyte count. No effect on dandruff was demonstrated when scalp organisms were suppressed. In the second group of experiments, dandruff was suppressed by selenium sulfide shampooling and the effect of continued suppression of Pityrosporum with topically applied amphotericin was measured. Comparative ultrastructural studies of basal cell carcinomas, seborrheic keratoses, actinic keratoses, and control nontumor skin from human patients demonstrate structural differences between invasive and noninvasive tumor cells.
