Mosquito vectors of bancroftian filariasis in Kwale District, Kenya.

A total of 2,906 female mosquitoes were collected over a period of one year using pyrethrum spray-sheet and human bait methods, and dissected for filaria larvae in three hinterland villages of coastal Kenya. The dominant species, Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus were also found to be the main vectors. From the spray catch collections 0,9 and 1 Cx. quinquefasciatus, An. gambiae and An. funestus out of 491, 708 and 403 respectively were infective. In the same order, 4, 2 and 2 out of 512, 196 and 180 from human bait collections were infective. The results indicate that Cx.quinquefasciatu

Field trial of Bacillus sphaericus strain B-101 (serotype H5a, 5b) against filariasis and Japanese encephalitis vectors in India.

A large-scale operational field trial was conducted from June 1993 to October 1994 to evaluate the efficacy of Bacillus sphaericus (strain B-101, serotype H5a,5b) for control of the vectors of filariasis (Culex quinquefasciatus) and Japanese encephalitis (Cx. tritaeniorhynchus and Cx. vishnui) in Rourkela city. Application of B. sphaericus, when sprayed at 1 g/m2 in storm drains, wastewater pools, abandoned masonry tanks, peripheral paddy fields, ditches, and other small water collections and at 4 g/m2 in domestic septic tanks, significantly reduced larval and pupal counts (P < 0.0001) and sig

[Current situation of yellow fever in Latin America].

Yellow fever endemicity is currently stabilized in South America: an average of 115 cases has officially been notified each year since 25 years (between 12 and 304 annual cases). These figures are underevaluated but no epidemic has been observed since 1983. Only sporadic or limited grouped cases have been reported. All declared cases correspond to people who have been infected within sylvatic areas, mainly adult forestmen. Within the last years, the majority of cases have occurred in Peru and Bolivia; the other cases have been observed in Brazil, in Columbia, in Ecuador and in French Guiana (i

Efficacy of Bacillus sphaericus against the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and other mosquitoes in swamps and rice fields in Zaire.

The microbial control of Anopheles gambiae and other mosquitoes with a granular formulation of Bacillus sphaericus (Vectolex) was evaluated in rice fields and swamps, located around the suburban region of Kingabwa-village in Kinshasa, Zaíre. Ten treatment cycles with 15-day intervals were carried out with the same application rate, 10 kg/ha, during the dry season (May to September 1991). The treatments reduced larval populations of An. gambiae by 98% after 48 h, but repetitive applications were required every 15 days to maintain control. The persistence of B. sphaericus spores was more apparen

[Sampling study for larval density quantification of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in the state of São Paulo, Brazil].

The Yellow Fever and Dengue Vector Control Program developed by the Superintendency for the Control of Endemic Diseases in the State of S. Paulo recommends Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus larval density monitoring in cities with domiciliar infestation. The sampling plan which has been applied in the countries of the Presidente Prudente region (SP- Brazil) since 1987 is described. The infestation is measured by using the Breteau Index. A sample of buildings is drawn, monthly and independently, in the infested cities, in which measurements are to be made. The sample is stratified and the elem

[The control of Aedes (Stegomyia) and related species involved in transmission of human arbovirus infections in tropical Africa (author's transl)].

In Africa, many Aedes mosquitos are involved in yellow fever and dengue transmission. Their control can be carried out either in a "prophylactic" way, when no disease occurs, or in a "curative" one, when virus is detected in the human community. In the first event, control is confounded with sanitation measures; in the second event, insecticidal control is needed against both larvae and adults. Larvae populations are destroyed by means of insecticidal deposits in the breeding-sites. Control of adults is achieved by thermal fogs or U.L.V. applications of organophosphorous compounds dispensed fr

Screwworm eradication: inadvertent selection for noncompetitive ecotypes during mass rearing.

The rapid fixation of a rare allelic form of alpha-glycerol phosphate dehydrogenase is related to a loss of competitive ability in nature of factory-reared screwworm flies. The increase in frequency results from selection for survival under conditions of domestication and rapid development at high constant temperatures in the factory.

Reassortment in infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and related birnaviruses.

The Birnaviridae family consists of non-enveloped viruses with a single capsid that have a double-stranded RNA genome divided into two segments. Because they infect birds, fish, rotifers, marine mollusks, and insects, these viruses are of major economic significance to the global poultry and aquaculture industries. In the last decade, reassortment events have led to the emergence and spread of new strains of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) in poultry that could complicate control efforts. This review summarizes the literature regarding the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of reas

Detection of Bartonella spp. in Cimex lectularius by MALDI-TOF MS.

Bed bugs are small hematophagous insects. They are found in temperate and tropical climates around the world. Their vectorial capacity for several pathogens, including Bartonella spp., has been suspected. An experimental study of artificial infection of Cimex lectularius with Bartonella quintana and Bartonella henselae bacteria was developed to evaluate the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to simultaneously identify bed bugs and their infectious status. This experimental study confirmed the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to identify bed bugs. In addition, it was able to differentiate between control bed bugs,

Suncus murinus. Observations on ecology, distribution, status to plague in Bombay.

The common house shrew Suncus murinus has been shown to play an important role in maintenance and perpetuation of plague infection by earlier plague workers. With the control of human plague there is no knowledge about foci of plague in small mammals associated with man. Present study was carried out to fill in this Lacuna. Studies carried out in the present paper reveal that S. murinus does not harbour any plague infection in Bombay. This species is widely distributed in Bombay and is found to be associated with man throughout the year. The principal species of fleas harboured by this mammal

Recent advances in genome editing of bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma congolense using CRISPR-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins: Proof of concept.

African Animal Trypanosomosis (AAT or Nagana) is a vector-borne disease caused by Trypanosomatidae, genus Trypanosoma. The disease is transmitted by the bite of infected hematophagous insects, mainly tsetse flies but also other blood-sucking insects including stomoxes and tabanids. Although many trypanosome species infect animals, the main agents responsible for this disease with a strong socio-economic and veterinary health impact are Trypanosoma congolense (T. congolense or Tc), Trypanosoma vivax (T.vivax), and to a lesser extent, Trypanosoma brucei brucei (T.brucei brucei or Tbb). These par

Effect of Homeopathic Medicines and a Nosode on Larvae of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

BACKGROUND: Cochliomyia hominivorax is the major fly causing primary myiasis in livestock animals in Brazil; its larvae develop in the host's living tissues, causing mutilations, which can even lead to death. In conventional treatments of myiasis, chemo-synthetic insecticides have been employed directly on larvae present in the wounds. Homeopathy may represent a healthy and sustainable alternative both to prevent and to treat myiasis in animals and humans. The current study evaluated how the emergence of adult insects is affected by the use of the homeopathic medicines Sulfur 12cH and Pyrogeni

Fixation and preparation of developing tissues from Aedes aegypti.

Blood-feeding mosquitoes, including the dengue and yellow fever vector Aedes aegypti, transmit many of the world's deadliest diseases. Such diseases have resurged in developing countries and pose clear threats for epidemic outbreaks in developed countries. Recent mosquito genome projects have stimulated interest in the potential for arthropod-borne disease control by genetic manipulation of vector insects, and genes that regulate development are of particular interest. This protocol describes a method for fixation and dissection of Ae. aegypti embryos, larvae, and pupae. Tissue processed in th

Coordination of Locomotion by Serotonergic Neurons in the Predatory Gastropod Pleurobranchaea californica.

Similar design characterizes neuronal networks for goal-directed motor control across the complex, segmented vertebrates, insects, and polychaete annelids with jointed appendages. Evidence is lacking for whether this design evolved independently in those lineages, evolved in parallel with segmentation and appendages, or could have been present in a soft-bodied common ancestor. We examined coordination of locomotion in an unsegmented, ciliolocomoting gastropod, the sea slug Pleurobranchaea californica, which may better resemble the urbilaterian ancestor. Previously, bilateral A-cluster neurons

RNAi-mediated knockdown of arginine kinase genes leads to high mortality and negatively affect reproduction and blood-feeding behavior of Culex pipiens pallens.

BACKGROUND: Arginine kinase (AK) is one of the crucial enzymes involved in energy metabolism in invertebrates, and has been proposed as the target for RNA interference (RNAi)-based control of agricultural insect pests. While there is only one AK gene in most insects, two AK genes were identified in Culex pipiens pallens, the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis and epidemic encephalitis. METHODS: The full-length cDNA sequences of CpAK1 and CpAK2 genes were obtained by reverse transcription PCR(RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The expression levels of CpAK1 and CpAK2 in d

Polyandrous Mexican Fruit Flies: Second Male Paternity and Biological Attributes of Transgenic Strains.

Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a damaging agricultural pest. Currently, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is used as part of its control. The SIT consists of the mass-rearing, sterilization, and release of insects in target areas. Sterile males mate with wild females, and prevent them from laying fertile eggs. However, even if females mate with sterile males, they can then remate with a second male. If this second male is wild, then this could reduce the efficiency of the SIT by producing viable offspring. The amount of progeny produced by second males (P2 values) for A. ludens

Enhanced insecticidal activity of Chilo iridescent virus expressing an insect specific neurotoxin.

Previously we have generated a recombinant Chilo iridescent virus (CIV) by inserting the green fluorescent protein gene (gfp) into the CIV 157L open reading frame (ORF) locus and showed that this recombinant (rCIV-Δ157L-gfp) was fully infectious both in cell culture as well as in insect larvae. This study opened up a new avenue for increasing the speed of kill of CIV and other iridoviruses by inserting virulence or toxin genes into the viral genome. In the current study we constructed a recombinant CIV (rCIV-Δ157L/gfp-AaIT) where the 157L ORF was replaced with both the AaIT neurotoxin gene fro

Study on natural breeding sites of sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) in areas of Leishmania transmission in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: The location of the microhabitats where immature phlebotomine sand flies of the genus Lutzomyia develop is one of the least-known aspects of this group of medically important insects. For this reason strategies of source reduction approach for their control have not been possible in contrast to other insect vectors (such as mosquitoes), because their juvenile stages in terrestrial microhabitats is difficult to detect. METHODS: Direct examination of soil samples, incubation of substrates and the use of emergence traps were the methods used to identify juvenile stages in 160 soil sa
