BACKGROUND: Mandibular retraction is the main etiological mechanism of class II malocclusion in China and the subsequent distal molar relationship can cause functional discomfort in mastication, breathing and the temporomandibular joint. The use of mandibular advancement (MA) devices has recently emerged as an adolescent mandibular retraction treatment; however, current studies regarding the effect thereof are relatively few, and there is lack of sufficient clinical support.
AIM: To investigate the clinical effect of invisalign MA on the treatment of mandibular retraction in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Surgery First Approach (SFA) and Surgery Early (SE) are considered promising alternatives, compared to the conventional three-stages orthodontic-surgical approach, for treatment of dento-maxillofacial deformities. However, many features need further study, like the role of the orthodontist. Aim of the study was to analyse the clinical characteristics of patients who underwent SFA and SE, and if differences in duration of orthodontics could be influenced by clinical features.
METHODS: A retrospective research was performed on patients who met the inclusion criteria for SFA (31) and

This case report describes the successful orthodontic management of a 25-year-old female patient presenting with Class II Division 2 malocclusion, moderate maxillary anterior crowding, and a missing mandibular left first molar. Treatment plan involved extraction of two maxillary first premolars to address crowding and protraction of two mandibular left molars, combined with the strategic use of mini-implants for precise tooth movement control. Ridge-split surgery was adopted to manage alveolar ridge resorption in the edentulous area. This procedure was essential for widening the narrow alveola

This case report describes the successful orthodontic tooth movement through the maxillary sinus in an adult patient. A 41-year-old Asian woman had severe lip protrusion and multiple missing posterior teeth. Her orthodontic treatment included the extraction of two teeth, maximum retraction of the incisors using the extraction spaces and the existing spaces from the missing molars, and closure of all remaining spaces. Even though the treatment time was extended because of the anatomic and biologic challenges associated with moving posterior teeth over a long distance through the maxillary sinus

The aim of this clinical trial was to compare the hard- and soft-tissue effects of 15 month full-time functional appliance therapy with Twin Block (TB) and Dynamax (Dx) appliances. The effects on both hard and soft tissue were analysed using cephalograms and three-dimensional optical surface laser scans. One hundred and three subjects with a class II division 1 malocclusion, and a minimum overjet of 7mm were available for analysis following stratified randomization according to gender and age. Data was collected at the start of treatment, 15 month therapy, and after 3 month post-treatment obse

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this investigation was to compare the skeletal stability of three different rigid fixation methods after mandibular advancement.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-five class II malocclusion patients treated with the use of bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy and mandibular advancement were selected for this retrospective study. Group 1 (n = 17) had miniplates with monocortical screws, Group 2 (n = 16) had bicortical screws and Group 3 (n = 22) had the osteotomy fixed by means of the hybrid technique. Cephalograms were taken preoperatively, 1 week within the postoperati

Animal models of osteonecrosis of the femoral head are indispensable to the understanding of successful treatment modalities for avascular necrosis of the femoral head in adults and in children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. Many of these models adequately reflect the current "vascular deprivation" theory regarding the etiology of the disease. In addition to spontaneous occurrence, surgical- and corticosteroid-induced models are suitable, common experimental ones. Osteonecrosis of spontaneously hypertensive rats appears to be due to defective bone formation and compression of the arteries en

Tooth agenesis can be considered the most common anomaly of craniofacial development in humans, with an estimated prevalence reaching up to 20% worldwide. Treatments for tooth agenesis include orthodontic space closure, use of fixed or removable dentures, and placement of dental implants. Some of these options may not be applicable to children in mixed dentition because they can prevent the normal development of facial bones. A multidisciplinary, staged approach considering the number, size, and development of the remaining teeth in the long term would be the most suitable treatment. The purpo

This case report describes the retreatment of a patient with Marfan syndrome whose earlier orthodontic and surgical treatment had been unsuccessful. Marfan syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. The disorder results from molecular defects in the fibrillin gene that are responsible for the impaired structural integrity of the skeletal, ocular, and cardiovascular systems. When she sought retreatment, the patient had an open bite, mandibular anterior crowding, severe root resorption, and temporomandibular joint derangement with some resorpt

The long-term effects of extraction and nonextraction edgewise treatments were compared in 63 patients with Class II, Division 1 malocclusions who were identified by discriminant analysis as being equally susceptible to the two strategies. A lateral cephalogram, study models, and a self-evaluation of the esthetic impact of treatment were obtained from each of the 33 extraction and 30 nonextraction subjects. The average posttreatment interval was 14.5 years. Although the two strategies produced significant, long-lived differences in the convexity of the profile and the protrusion of the dentiti

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by NF1 gene mutations, resulting in neurofibromin deficiency and vascular fragility. Although excessive hemorrhage during surgery has been reported in patients with NF1, such complications during orthognathic surgery are extremely rare. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old woman with NF1 presented with skeletal Class II malocclusion. Preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed no neurofibromas along the airway or near the surgical field. Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sag

The lack of the left first molar maxillary and the left second molar maxillary, caused respectively by impaction and agenesis is a very rare case, which determines an important occlusal imbalance and asymmetrical mandible movement. A gnatologic and functional orthodontic approach were planned to improve the retrognathic mandible and the muscular activity using kinesiograph and electromyography.

Cherubism is a rare non-neoplastic disease that affects the jaws causing significant destruction and disfigurement. The disease also affects the normal eruption, occlusion and function of the dento-alveolar complex. Cherubism may radiographically and histologically resemble central giant cell granuloma, fibrous dysplasia and other giant cell lesions. The case of a 15-year 4-month-old girl with no obvious facial swelling or signs of cherubism is described in this report. The patient presented with a dental malocclusion that included the ectopic eruption and displacement of teeth caused by the l
