Visual hazardous models: A hybrid approach to investigate road hazardous events.

Road users (drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and Animals) are exposed to hazardous events during their commute. With 23 % of global fatalities among pedestrians, their safety continues to be a principal interest for policymakers worldwide. Owing to limited budgets available, there is a growing emphasis on data-driven stochastic models to decide on policies. However, statistical models have limitations due to crash data having redundant features, inherent heterogeneity, and unobserved characteristics. The random parameter model framework addresses the unobserved heterogeneity, but redundant fe

Epidemiology of maxillofacial injury among adults in sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Injuries remain one of the leading causes of death globally. These disproportionately affect young adults and are particularly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Maxillofacial injuries (MI) pose significant challenges to public health systems. However, much remains unknown regarding the epidemiology and extent of the financial burden in resource-limited areas, such as SSA, further necessitating more research and support. This scoping review aims to investigate the mechanism, distribution, and financial impact of MI in adults aged ≥ 18 years in SSA. MAIN BODY: The scoping revie

Missed hand and forearm injuries in multiple trauma patients: An analysis from the TraumaRegister DGU®.

PURPOSE: Multiple trauma patients have a high risk of missed injuries. The main point of our study was to provide new epidemiological data on hand and forearm injuries in multiple trauma with a focus on those that were missed. Therefore, we used the database of the TraumaRegister DGU®. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated anonymous data from 139931 patients aged 1-100 years with multiple trauma in the TraumaRegister DGU® of the German Society for Trauma Surgery from 2007 to 2017. Patients with hand and forearm injuries documented during hospital stay were identified and analyzed. We included

Functional outcome predictors after spinal accessory nerve to suprascapular nerve transfer for restoration of shoulder abduction in traumatic brachial plexus injuries in adults: the effect of time from injury to surgery.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder abduction is crucial for daily activities, and its restoration is one of the surgical priorities. We evaluated the predictive factors of shoulder abduction functional outcome after spinal accessory nerve (SAN) to suprascapular nerve (SSN) transfer, with special emphasis on the effect of time from injury to the surgery, in the treatment of traumatic brachial plexus injuries. METHOD: This cohort included adult patients who underwent SAN-to-SSN transfer with a preoperative Medical Research Council strength grade 0 and a follow-up of minimum 18 months. The primary outcome was

Haemodynamics as a determinant of need for pre-hospital application of a pelvic circumferential compression device in adult trauma patients.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic ring fractures are common following high-energy blunt trauma and can lead to substantial haemorrhage, morbidity and mortality. Pelvic circumferential compression devices (PCCDs) improve position and stability of open-book type pelvic fracture, and can improve haemodynamics in patients with hypovolaemic shock. However, PCCDs may cause adverse outcomes including worsening of lateral compression fracture patterns and routine use is associated with high costs. Controversy regarding indication of PCCDs exists with some centres recommending PCCD in the setting of hypovolaemic sh

Traumatic tension pneumocephalus - Two cases and comprehensive review of literature.

UNLABELLED: Although traumatic pneumocephalus is not uncommon, it rarely evolves into tension pneumocephalus (TP). Characterized by the presence of increasing amounts of intracranial air and concurrent appearance or worsening neurological symptoms, TP can be devastating if not recognized and treated promptly. We present two cases of traumatic TP and a concise review of literature on this topic. Two cases of traumatic TP are presented. In addition, a literature search revealed 20 additional cases, of which 18 had sufficient information for inclusion. Literature cases were combined with the 2 re

Severe Injuries in E-Scooter Accidents: An Evaluation of Data From the TraumaRegister DGU.

BACKGROUND: The e-scooter has become an alternative mode of transport in urban areas, and this has led to a rising number of injuries. There is a lack of comprehensive, nationwide data on severe injuries due to e-scooter accidents. METHODS: From 2020 onward, e-scooter accidents have been recorded as a separate subgroup in the multicenter TraumaRegister DGU (TR-DGU) (DGU = German Trauma Society). In this study, we analyzed the data from 2020-2023 and compared them with data for bicyclists and other road users. RESULTS: We compared data on 538 persons who were severely injured in e-scooter acc

Investigating safety of vulnerable road users in selected EU countries.

PROBLEM: Vulnerable road users comprise over half of all road accident victims in the EU and their safety situation is not improving as fast as for motorists. The paper examines factors affecting fatality risk of pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and moped riders in seven EU countries using data from CARE database. METHOD: Comparing accident severity indicators between countries is problematic because of data quality issues, different degree of underreporting, and different exposure levels. To avoid bias arising from these issues, fatality risk is modeled with binary logistic regression.

Responses of elite road motorcyclists to racing in tropical conditions: a case study.

INTRODUCTION: Anecdotal reports suggest that elite road motorcyclists suffer from high core body temperatures and physiological and perceptual strain when competing in hot conditions. METHODS: Four male non-heat-acclimatized elite motorcyclists (3 Superbike, 1 Supersport) had their gastrointestinal temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate measured and recorded throughout practice, qualifying, and race sessions of an Australian Superbike and Supersport Championship round contested in tropical conditions. Physiological strain was calculated during the sessions, and fluid-balance measures w

Mucociliary clearance, airway inflammation and nasal symptoms in urban motorcyclists.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence that outdoor workers exposed to high levels of air pollution exhibit airway inflammation and increased airway symptoms. We hypothesized that these workers would experience increased airway symptoms and decreased nasal mucociliary clearance associated with their exposure to air pollution. METHODS: In total, 25 non-smoking commercial motorcyclists, aged 18-44 years, were included in this study. These drivers work 8-12 hours per day, 5 days per week, driving on urban streets. Nasal mucociliary clearance was measured by the saccharine transit test; airway acidificati

Alcohol, illicit and non-illicit psychoactive drug use and road traffic injury in Thailand: a case-control study.

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between alcohol use, psychoactive drug use and road traffic injury (RTI). A case-control study was conducted among drivers in Bangkok, Thailand. Two hundred cases and 849 controls were enrolled between February and November 2006. Cases who sustained a RTI were matched with four controls recruited from petrol stations within a 1-km radius of the reported crash site of the case. A positive alcohol breath test (> or =50mg/dl), and positive tests for the presence of illicit (amphetamine, cocaine, marijuana) and non-illicit psychoactive

The toll of traffic-related fatalities in a metropolitan Italian area through the experience of the Department of Legal Medicine.

Despite the introduction of new traffic laws in Italy, traffic-related deaths are still a huge burden. The study presents data and medico-legal issues behind traffic deaths in Milan between 2001 and 2012 (1506 traffic-related deaths). Data were collected from the database of the Department of Legal Medicine: 79.4% males and 20.6% females (mean age 44.14). The target group concerned traumatic deaths as a consequence of the accident as well as deaths not directly related to an accident. Although 6.1% were non-traumatic deaths (cause of death unconnected to the accident, i.e. because of a heart a
