Multiple meaning systems in the brain: a case for visual semantics.

In this study we report our investigations of a category specific visual associative agnosia. The patient D.R.S.'s spoken language skills were excellent. Although he could name objects from their description, he was unable to name them by sight nor was he able to mime their use. On visual-visual matching tasks his performance was impaired and affected by semantic proximity. In two tasks his knowledge of visual objects was demonstrated to be significantly more impaired than his knowledge of visual living things. It is argued that these findings support a multiple knowledge base hypothesis.

Development of conceptual knowledge in children with mental retardation.

Nine and 14-year-old children with mild mental retardation and children without mental retardation matched for mental and chronological age were first shown a novel category made up of five visual figures. They were then given a recognition test with a set containing the previously presented figures, novel category members, and the category prototype. The relative contribution of prototypical and exemplar-specific information to subjects' performance on the recognition test was evaluated. Results showed that the children without mental retardation employed both forms of information in arriving

Callosal transfer in schizophrenia: too much or too little?

Evidence from diverse sources has pointed to an abnormality in callosal transfer in schizophrenia. To examine this further, a test was devised that measures Stroop interference and facilitation within and between the cerebral hemispheres. 46 heterogeneous schizophrenic patients were tested, and it was found that lateralized Stroop effects were equivalent in the left and right hemispheres and did not differ from normal or psychiatric (affective disorder) control Ss. In control Ss, Stroop effects that required interhemispheric transfer of coded information were reduced relative to those requirin

Variations in memory function and sex steroid hormones across the menstrual cycle.

Memory, mood, and hormone levels were measured in 25 women during the menstrual and luteal phases of their cycles. Significantly lower visual memory (delayed recall) scores were found during the menstrual phase compared to the luteal phase. No phase differences were found on mood measures or on other memory measures including digit span, paired-associate learning, immediate recall of visual material, and immediate or delayed paragraph recall. The visual memory decrease was most prominent in approximately one-half of the sample and was significantly correlated with plasma progesterone in the lu

Parallel pattern processing and visual agnosia.

A series of visual search experiments are reported examining pattern processing in a visual agnosic patient. We examined search for targets defined by: (I) the combination of their features relative to homogeneous distractors; (2) the combination of their features relative to heterogeneous distractors; and (3) a single feature difference relative to the distractors (their orientation). Normal subjects demonstrate evidence of spatially parallel search when combined-feature targets are detected against homogeneous distractors, and when targets are defined by a salient feature difference. There a

Preserved recognition of familiar personal names in global aphasia.

Recognition of proper and common nouns was compared in four patients diagnosed with global aphasia secondary to ischemic left-hemisphere infarction. For proper noun recognition, subjects matched the spoken or written name of a famous person to a photograph, and for common nouns, subjects were tested on standardized and special word recognition tests. As expected, common noun recognition was severely compromised in the aphasic patients. In contrast, familiar personal names, despite their greater length and complexity, were recognized equally well by aphasic and normal control subjects. The righ

Right posterior brain-damaged patients are poor at assessing the age of a face.

The ability to order unknown faces by age was investigated in right and left brain-damaged patients, divided into posterior and non-posterior groups on the basis of CT scan findings. A face recognition test and a figure ground discrimination test were also given. All three tests were affected by brain damage, but their sensitivity to the locus and side of lesion varied. While no hemispheric difference was found on the figure ground discrimination test, the face age test significantly discriminated patients with right posterior injury from any other brain-damaged group. The face recognition tes

Residual learning capability in organic amnesia.

This article provides a review of residual learning capability in patients suffering from the organic amnesic syndrome. It is shown that organic amnesics are able to learn a considerable number of laboratory tasks, many to a level comparable with normals. It shown that the tasks on which they succeed invariably involve testing situations which do not refer to specific preceding events (e.g. pursuit rotor, maze learning, picture completion, conditioning). It is concluded that this pattern of preserved learning capability can be interpreted as an impairment of episodic storage with the relative

Visual evoked responses in multiple sclerosis: comparison of two methods for pattern reversal.

Visual evoked responses have been elicited by reversal of a black and white checkerboard pattern and also by a display of light-emitting diodes (LED) generating a reversal of a pattern of illuminated red circular areas. In a control group the LED display produced responses of lower amplitude and shorter latency compared to responses to checkerboard stimulation. In patients with a definite or probable diagnosis of multiple sclerosis the stimulators were equally effective in evoking pathological responses; in patients with a possible but less certain diagnosis abnormal responses were found in a

Exemplar selectivity reflects perceptual similarities in the human fusiform cortex.

While brain imaging studies emphasized the category selectivity of face-related areas, the underlying mechanisms of our remarkable ability to discriminate between different faces are less understood. Here, we recorded intracranial local field potentials from face-related areas in patients presented with images of faces and objects. A highly significant exemplar tuning within the category of faces was observed in high-Gamma (80-150 Hz) responses. The robustness of this effect was supported by single-trial decoding of face exemplars using a minimal (n = 5) training set. Importantly, exemplar tun

The superior colliculus subserves interhemispheric neural summation in both normals and patients with a total section or agenesis of the corpus callosum.

To verify the possibility that the superior colliculus (SC) subserves interhemispheric neural summation, we presented single or double white visual targets to one or both hemifields in normal participants and in patients lacking the corpus callosum (one with total callosotomy and one with callosal agenesis). Simple reaction time was typically faster with double than single stimuli, a phenomenon known as the redundant target effect (RTE); moreover, confirming previous results, we found a larger RTE in patients without callosum than in normals. In both groups, the redundancy gain was related to

Spatial vs. object specific attention in high-order visual areas.

Recently we reported that the topographic organization of visual field eccentricity in human visual cortex extends into high-order, ventral occipitotemporal (VOT) cortex. Within this cortex, regions that respond preferentially to faces and buildings have specific eccentricity biases, suggesting that this category-eccentricity association may reflect differential needs of recognition processes. However, it is still not clear to what extent this center/periphery differentiation within high-order occipitotemporal cortex depends on immediate, moment-to-moment, task demands. Previous attention stud

Visual agnosia in a child with non-lesional occipito-temporal CSWS.

In this paper we describe a case of severe visual agnosia in a child with an electrophysiological pattern of continuous spike-wave discharges in slow sleep (CSWS) in the occipito-temporal regions. The neuropsychological spectrum related to this phenomenon is discussed. Published paediatric reports associate visual agnosia (i.e. an inability to recognize objects without impairment of visual acuity) mainly with symptomatic occipito-temporal aetiology (e.g. cortical dysplasia, vascular insults) and other neurological symptoms (e.g. autism). We describe a detailed 2 year electrophysiological and n

Holistic processing only? The role of the right fusiform face area in radiological expertise.

Radiologists can visually detect abnormalities on radiographs within 2s, a process that resembles holistic visual processing of faces. Interestingly, there is empirical evidence using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for the involvement of the right fusiform face area (FFA) in visual-expertise tasks such as radiological image interpretation. The speed by which stimuli (e.g., faces, abnormalities) are recognized is an important characteristic of holistic processing. However, evidence for the involvement of the right FFA in holistic processing in radiology comes mostly from short or

Parietal-Occipital Interactions Underlying Control- and Representation-Related Processes in Working Memory for Nonspatial Visual Features.

Although the manipulation of load is popular in visual working memory research, many studies confound general attentional demands with context binding by drawing memoranda from the same stimulus category. In this fMRI study of human observers (both sexes), we created high- versus low-binding conditions, while holding load constant, by comparing trials requiring memory for the direction of motion of one random dot kinematogram (RDK; 1M trials) versus for three RDKs (3M), or versus one RDK and two color patches (1M2C). Memory precision was highest for 1M trials and comparable for 3M and 1M2C tri

Retinal adaptation to object motion.

Due to fixational eye movements, the image on the retina is always in motion, even when one views a stationary scene. When an object moves within the scene, the corresponding patch of retina experiences a different motion trajectory than the surrounding region. Certain retinal ganglion cells respond selectively to this condition, when the motion in the cell's receptive field center is different from that in the surround. Here we show that this response is strongest at the very onset of differential motion, followed by gradual adaptation with a time course of several seconds. Different subregio

Multidimensional scaling of schematically represented faces based on dissimilarity estimates and evoked potentials of differences amplitudes.

This study researches the input of the cerebral occipital and temporal cortex in the analysis of facial configuration and expressive characteristics. Analysis is based on the construction of a spherical model for the differentiation of schematically presented faces with quantitatively altering curvature of the mouth and brows. The model is designed using the method of multidimensional scaling of the dissimilarity judgments between stimuli (faces) and the amplitude of evoked potentials of differences (EPD) between abrupt stimulus changes recorded from the occipital and posterior temporal cortex

Aging and attentional guidance during visual search: functional neuroanatomy by positron emission tomography.

Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to examine adult age differences in neural activation during visual search. Target detection was less accurate for older adults than for younger adults, but both age groups were successful in using color to guide attention to a subset of display items. Increasing perceptual difficulty led to greater activation of occipitotemporal cortex for younger adults than for older adults, apparently as the result of older adults maintaining higher levels of activation within the easier task conditions. The results suggest that compensation for age-related decli

Parietal electroencephalogram beta asymmetry and selective attention to angry facial expressions in healthy human subjects.

Research on cerebral affective processing in humans has concentrated on the lateralization of the prefrontal cortex. However, the parietal cortex also seems to play a role in motivation and emotion. In the present study the lateralized role of the parietal cortex in motivated attention was investigated, using an electrophysiological correlate of brain activity (electroencephalogram (EEG)) and a modified Dot probe task, which indexes selective, i.e. avoidant or vigilant attention for angry faces in a spatial display. Twenty-two participants underwent an EEG baseline recording from the F3, F4, P
