Investigating links between co-rumination and personality, social functioning, and emotional well-being in a representative sample of adults.

Co-rumination occurs when people discuss problems in-depth, engage in speculation about their problems, and focus on negative affect. Current evidence suggests that co-rumination involves a paradox: whilst it can strengthen relationship bonds, co-rumination can also adversely impact mood (e.g., lead to anxiety). Most of the research on this topic to date has been conducted with children and adolescents. In this survey study, we examined the correlates of co-rumination in a representative sample of 495 adult residents of the UK (aged 18-87, stratified by age, gender, and ethnicity). In regressi

Linking boundary crossing from work to nonwork to work-related rumination across time: A variable- and person-oriented approach.

[Correction Notice: An Erratum for this article was reported in Vol 22(4) of Journal of Occupational Health Psychology (see record 2017-05746-001). There were errors in two separate sections of the article. The final sentence preceding Hypothesis 4 in "The Present Study" section should read, "We did not hypothesize that the specific forms of work-related thoughts (i.e., affective rumination, problem-solving pondering, or lack of psychological detachment) would be differently associated with stability or changes in boundary crossing behavior." The fifth sentence in the second paragraph of the "

Feasibility and efficacy of an at-home, smart-device aided mindfulness program in people with Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease with a high prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Mindfulness is a practice that encourages individuals to cultivate a present-focused, acceptance-based approach for managing psychological distress. Its positive effect on MS has been demonstrated, but learning such technique is expensive and time-consuming. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and efficacy of an 8-week, at-home, smart-device aided mindfulness program in a cohort of MS patients. Specifically, we explored the role of a brain-sensing headband providing real-tim

Pain Catastrophising Predicts Alcohol Hangover Severity and Symptoms.

Alcohol hangover is a cause of considerable social and economic burden. Identification of predictors of alcohol hangover severity have the potential to contribute to reductions in costs associated with both absenteeism/presenteeism and health care. Pain catastrophising (PC) is the tendency to ruminate and describe a pain experience in more exaggerated terms. The current study examines the possibility that this cognitive coping strategy may influence experience of alcohol hangover. The aims of the current study were to (1) examine the relationship between hangover severity and PC, (2) explore a

Prolonged performance-related neuroendocrine activation and perseverative cognition in low- and high-anxious university music students.

Music performances are social-evaluative situations that can elicit marked short-term neuroendocrine activation and anxious thoughts especially in musicians suffering from music performance anxiety (MPA). The temporal patterns of neuroendocrine activity and concert-related worry and rumination (perseverative cognition, PC) days before and after a concert in low- and high-anxious musicians are unknown. The first goal of the present study was to investigate the prolonged effects of a solo music performance and the effects of trait MPA on salivary cortisol (sC), alpha-amylase (sAA), and concert-r

Neural representations of aversive value encoding in pain catastrophizers.

Chronic pain is exacerbated by maladaptive cognition such as pain catastrophizing (PC). Biomarkers of PC mechanisms may aid precision medicine for chronic pain. Here, we investigate EEG biomarkers using mass univariate and multivariate (machine learning) approaches. We test theoretical notions that PC results from a combination of augmented aversive-value encoding ("magnification") and persistent expectations of pain ("rumination"). Healthy individuals with high or low levels of PC underwent an experimental pain model involving nociceptive laser stimuli preceded by cues predicting forthcoming

Pros and cons of a wandering mind: a prospective study.

Mind wandering (MW) has recently been associated with both adaptive (e.g., creativity enhancement) and maladaptive (e.g., mood worsening) consequences. This study aimed at investigating whether proneness to MW was prospectively associated with negative health outcomes. At time 0, 21 women, 19 men; mean age = 24.5 (4.9) underwent a 5-min baseline electrocardiogram (ECG), a 20-min laboratory tracking task with thought probes, and personality questionnaires. At time 1 (1 year follow-up), the same participants underwent a 24-h Ecological Momentary Assessment characterized by ambulatory ECG recordi

The balanced mind: the variability of task-unrelated thoughts predicts error monitoring.

Self-generated thoughts unrelated to ongoing activities, also known as "mind-wandering," make up a substantial portion of our daily lives. Reports of such task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs) predict both poor performance on demanding cognitive tasks and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) activity in the default mode network (DMN). However, recent findings suggest that TUTs and the DMN can also facilitate metacognitive abilities and related behaviors. To further understand these relationships, we examined the influence of subjective intensity, ruminative quality, and variability of mind-wandering o

Stress-related thinking predicts the cortisol awakening response and somatic symptoms in healthy adults.

OBJECTIVE: Perseverative cognition (i.e., worry, stress-related thinking) may prolong stress-related physiological activation. However, its role within the context of the written emotional disclosure paradigm has not been examined. This study explored: (1) the effects of stress-related thinking on the cortisol awakening response and upper respiratory infection symptoms and; (2) the efficacy of two expressive writing interventions on these health outcomes. METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to write about their most stressful life experience (using the Guided Disclosure Protocol; n=3

Anxiety, Depression, and Obsessive-compulsive Disorder in a Recently Diagnosed Case of Systemic Sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune condition that frequently affects women. It is a progressive, debilitating disease that has widespread manifestations, targeting different organs of the body with potentially fatal consequences due to lung and kidney involvement. Women with this disease mostly present with Raynaud's phenomenon along with symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Just like any chronic debilitating condition, patients with systemic sclerosis often suffer from mental health issues that can further worsen their condition, significantly affecting their quality of life.

Women's concerns about the emotional impact of awareness of heritable breast cancer risk and its implications for their children.

Women tested for mutations in BRCA1/2 genes who have minor-aged children confront difficult decisions about if, when, and how to share information about hereditary cancer risk with their children. These choices are often seemingly influenced by how mothers anticipate the emotional burdens they and their children will experience in response to test results. Here, we investigate the association between maternal cognitions, pretest psychological well-being, and coping style with mothers' anticipated emotional reactions to learning that they are BRCA1/2 mutation carriers (N = 205). In a linear reg

Obsessive versus delusional jealousy.

Although obsessive jealousy is a highly disturbing disorder, frequently it goes unrecognized, as most attention is paid to delusional jealousy, being the more prominent clinical phenomenon. In order to distinguish obsessive from delusional jealousy, the basic clinical characteristics of these two types of jealousy are presented, as well as the mechanism of their respective genesis, and the differences which we must be aware of in order to prevent misdiagnosis and consequent wrong treatment choices. The theoretical considerations are supported by case presentations providing a clear picture of

Therapeutic horticulture in clinical depression: a prospective study.

Clinically depressed persons suffer from impaired mood and distortion of cognition. This study assessed changes in depression severity and perceived attentional capacity of clinically depressed adults (N=18) during a 12-week therapeutic horticulture program. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Attentional Function Index (AFI) were administered at baseline, twice during (4 and 8 weeks), and immediately after the intervention (12 weeks), and at a 3-month follow-up. Experiences of being away and fascination related to the intervention were measured at 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The mean BDI score de

Climate change and mental health: A multinational study of climate-anxiety, coping, and psychosocial responses.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is an increasingly important determinant of global mental health, affecting emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. The emergence of climate-anxiety and the unequal distribution of environmental risks highlight the need for cross-cultural evidence to inform equitable adaptation strategies. AIM: To examine the psychological and functional impacts of climate change across diverse populations, focusing on climate-anxiety, emotional responses, coping strategies, and perceived psychosocial support within a geopsychiatry framework. METHODS: A multinatio

Trichotillomania: The interplay between emotional states, urges and hair pulling episodes.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania (TTM) is a body-focused repetitive behavior disorder characterized by recurrent hair pulling and psychosocial impairment. Although theoretical models emphasize emotion regulation as a key mechanism in TTM, the precise relationship between emotional states, urge intensity, and hair pulling behavior remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the momentary interplay between affective states, urge intensity, and hair pulling episodes in daily life using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). METHODS: Sixty-one Individuals diagnosed with TTM reported seven times

Septohippocampal acetylcholine and theta oscillations can modulate memory encoding and retrieval: Insights from a neural masses network.

The hippocampus' ability to encode new information while simultaneously avoiding disruptive interference poses a fundamental challenge to cognitive neuroscience. It has been supposed that dynamical changes in acetylcholine (ACh), a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory, can facilitate a shifting between encoding and retrieval: high ACh levels promote encoding by enhancing synaptic plasticity while concurrently suppressing retrieval-related networks; low ACh levels favor retrieval, suppressing external inputs and synaptic potentiation. The primary source of ACh in the hippocampus, th

Brain-based predictive modeling of mind-wandering and involuntary thought: the idiographic approach.

A substantial portion of waking life consists of mental experiences that arise involuntarily, including mind-wandering, spontaneous thought and rumination. Given that these experiences are fundamental to cognitive function and mental health, there has been growing scientific and clinical interest in using measures of brain activity to model and predict the momentary occurrence of these various forms of involuntary thought. In the most common machine learning approach in neuroimaging and electrophysiology research, model training data include neural features derived from a population of individ

Momentary Emotion Regulation Strategies and Pain Experience Among Adults With Chronic Pain: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVES: The intention of this study was to characterize the real-time momentary relationship between emotion regulation strategies and the pain experience (ie intensity, interference, and negative affect) among adults with chronic pain. Chronic pain is a significant public health concern. Psychological treatments are effective for treating chronic pain, but long-term follow-up studies are limited, and treatment effect sizes are small. Identifying modifiable treatment targets, such as emotion regulation (ER), is critical to improve interventions. ER (ie, cognitive and attentional strategies
