Dental and oropharyngeal lesions in rats with chronic acid reflux esophagitis.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated pathological changes in the tooth and pharynx of GERD rats to elucidate the association between gastric acid reflux and oral and pharyngeal diseases. METHODS: An experimental rat model of chronic acid reflux esophagitis was surgically created. The oral cavities were observed histologically every 2 weeks until 20 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: At 10 weeks after surgery, molar crown heights in GERD rats were shorter than that in control rats, and inflammatory cell infiltration by gastric acid reflux was found in the periodontal mucosa of GERD rats. Further

Dental anomalies in two patients with incontinentia pigmenti.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare X-linked dominant inherited disorder which has a variety of ectodermal aberrations. Skin hyperpigmentation is the most characteristic feature of IP. However, extracutaneous anomalies involving dentition, hair, eyes, and central nervous system are also found. The dental anomalies reported include peg-shaped or malformed teeth, hypodontia, delayed eruption, and impacted tooth. This report describes the dental anomalies in 2 IP patients who had the characteristic features of skin hyperpigmentation. One was a 13-year-old girl who had slender cone-shaped perman

Mechanical responses to orthodontic loading: a 3-dimensional finite element multi-tooth model.

INTRODUCTION: The initial mechanical response to orthodontic loading comprises biologic reactions that remain unclear, despite their clinical significance. We used a 3-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate the stress-strain responses of teeth to orthodontic loading. METHODS: The model was derived from computed tomography data, with adequate boundary conditions and tissue characterization, with orthodontic hardware to provide a more accurate reflection of events during orthodontic therapy. This study also incorporated the adjacent dentition. Two cases were analyzed: a single-tooth

Fracture strength and failure patterns of different restoration approaches in endodontically treated maxillary premolars: an in vitro study with fractographic analysis.

BACKGROUND: The restoration of endodontically treated premolars has been a controversial topic. Whether a post or a more conservative option should be used remains inconclusive. The present in vitro study aimed to evaluate the fracture strength and failure pattern of different partial coverage restoration approaches for endodontically treated upper premolars in comparison to the post, core and crown approach. METHODS: Thirty-five maxillary premolars were endodontically treated and assigned to five groups (n = 7): endocrown (E), endocrown with buccal veneer (EB), overlay (O), overlay with bucca

The influence of zirconia and fiber posts with different lengths on the fracture strength of maxillary central incisors restored with zirconia crowns: an in vitro study.

AIM: Endodontically treated teeth are more susceptible to fractures than vital teeth because of significant coronal and radicular dentin loss during endodontic therapeutic procedures. The objective of the present in vitro study was to estimate and compare the influence of the post length and type on the fracture strength of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty extracted human maxillary central incisors were decoronated 2 mm above the cementoenamel junction. The teeth were selected and subjected to standard endodontic treatment, resulting in three gro

Interdisciplinary management of gingival recession and pathologic teeth migration-Revisiting dental aesthetics.

Poor aesthetics due to gingival recession can be a common concern among patients, specifically in individuals with gummy or high smile line. Various factors including patient related, site specific and technical factors need to be considered while treating gingival recession, as they all have a significant bearing on treatment success. Patients having aesthetic problems due to exposed root surfaces should have surgical root coverage procedures. Pathologic migration of anterior teeth is another aesthetic and functional problem that may be associated with advanced or chronic periodontal disease.

Qualitative and quantitative determination of dental amalgam restoration volume.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Volume of tooth structure replaced by an existing restoration, as assessed by visual and radiographic examination, is one diagnostic measure used by dental practitioners and dental insurance agencies to determine the relative need to restore a tooth with a full-coverage cast restoration. However, use of these methods has not been validated. PURPOSE: This study compared the volume of a range of dental amalgam restorations placed in typodont teeth, as estimated by dentists, dental students and laypersons, with the actual volume of each restoration. METHODS AND MATERIAL: S

Factors affecting the time of onset of resorption in avulsed and replanted incisor teeth in children.

Resorption is the main reason for loss of replanted teeth. The outcome examined in this study is the timing of the onset of resorption. The effect of dichotomised dry and wet time intervals as well as the presence of additional crown damage and of contamination were determined. Of 84 replanted teeth, 67.5% developed resorptions. Twenty-eight had detectable additional crown damage with a more rapid onset being seen in these cases (P=0.009). The critical limit for dry time was 15 min (P=0.038) and significant differences persisted for greater limits also. Serial analysis of the association betwe
