Gap in knowledge and improvement after an infectious disease training program for Ugandan healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Achieving international accreditation standards, including those defined by the Joint Commission International (JCI), requires strong infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs to limit antimicrobial resistance. In Uganda, healthcare workers (HCWs) still face challenges in infectious disease (ID) management due to limited diagnostic resources, standardized protocols, and structured IPC training. This study aimed at assessing possible gaps in knowledge at baseline and short-term improvements after a context-adapted IPC and AMS training progra

The type of infections and the use of antibiotics among patients with rheumatoid arthritis: A review.

Patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis have a heightened susceptibility to infections, which may lead to higher rates of illness and death. The heightened susceptibility may arise from the illness itself, which causes changes in the body's innate cellular defense mechanisms, or from the medications used to manage the condition. The precise level of risk for infections associated with traditional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs has not been fully elucidated. This review aimed To investigate the type of infections and the use of antibiotics among patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Healthcare Waste-A Serious Problem for Global Health.

Healthcare waste (HCW) is generated in different healthcare facilities (HCFs), such as hospitals, laboratories, veterinary clinics, research centres and nursing homes. It has been assessed that the majority of medical waste does not pose a risk to humans. It is estimated that 15% of the total amount of produced HCW is hazardous and can be infectious, toxic or radioactive. Hazardous waste is a special type of waste which, if not properly treated, can pose a risk to human health and to the environment. HCW contains potentially harmful microorganisms that can be spread among healthcare personnel,

Late Onset of Antiretroviral Therapy in Adults Living with HIV in an Urban Area in Brazil: Prevalence and Risk Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Highly active antiretroviral therapy has been available since 1996. Early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) leads to improved therapeutic response and reduced HIV transmission. However, a significant number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) still start treatment late. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze characteristics and factors associated with late initiation of ART among HIV-infected treatment-naïve patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included PLHIV older than 17 years who initiated ART at two public health facilities from 2009 to 2012, in a city locat

AIDS Clinical Research in Spain-Large HIV Population, Geniality of Doctors, and Missing Opportunities.

The first cases of AIDS in Spain were reported in 1982. Since then over 85,000 persons with AIDS have been cumulated, with 60,000 deaths. Current estimates for people living with HIV are of 145,000, of whom 20% are unaware of it. This explains the still high rate of late HIV presenters. Although the HIV epidemic in Spain was originally driven mostly by injection drug users, since the year 2000 men having sex with men (MSM) account for most new incident HIV cases. Currently, MSM represent over 80% of new yearly HIV diagnoses. In the 80s, a subset of young doctors and nurses working at Internal
