The regional distribution of ventilation (Vr), perfusion (Qr) (expressed in absolute values) and the regional distribution of ventilated lung volume, of ventilation and of perfusion (expressed as %) were studied using Xenon 133 in 13 subjects with a unilateral pleural effusion of proven or presumed tuberculous origin. The examinations were performed in a sitting position. The initial examination was carried out after as complete an evacuation as possible of the fluid effusion. Eight subjects underwent a follow-up examination after two months treatment with tuberculostatic agents combined with

PURPOSE: Pleural effusion (PE) is a common clinical manifestation, and millions of people suffer from pleural disease. Herein, this retrospective study was performed to evaluate the biomarkers and ratios in serum and pleural fluid (PF) for the differential diagnosis of the multiple types of PE and search for a new diagnostic strategy for PE.
METHODS: In-patients, who developed tuberculous PE (TPE), malignant PE (MPE), complicated parapneumonic effusion (CPPE), uncomplicated PPE (UPPE), or PE caused by connective tissue diseases (CTDs) and underwent thoracentesis at Peking University People's

BACKGROUND: China is experiencing rapid growth in its population of older adults, which may lead to increased susceptibility to tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) due to age-related changes in the immune system. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic potential of multiple biomarkers in individuals aged 60 years and above with pleural effusion.
METHODS: A total of 519 adult patients from Ningbo First Hospital were included in the study, with 7 biomarkers and their ratios in serum and pleural effusion analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Effusion Adenosine Deaminase(ADA), γ-Inte

OBJECTIVE: As soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) is a marker of T-lymphocyte activation, we sought to determine whether its measurement in pleural fluid is diagnostically useful in tuberculous pleurisy.
DESIGN: We compared the concentrations of sIL-2R in pleural samples of 23 patients with tuberculous pleurisy and 109 patients with non-tuberculous effusions (34 malignant, 34 parapneumonic, 27 transudates and 14 miscellaneous). sIL-2R was measured by a commercial ELISA test and its performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.
RESULTS: The mean values

The relationship between interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels and clinical parameters was studied in 25 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The serum levels of IL-6, C-reactive protein, alpha1-acid glycoprotein and fibrinogen were significantly higher in mesothelioma than in lung adenocarcinoma with cytology-positive pleural effusion. Serum IL-6 levels correlated with the levels of the acute-phase proteins. We demonstrated a high incidence of thrombocytosis (48%) and a significant correlation between platelet count and the serum IL-6 level. The level of IL-6 in the pleural fluid of patients w

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe the findings of juxtapleural pulmonary tuberculoma on contrast-enhanced sonography and investigate their correlation with histologic findings.
METHODS: From April 2008 to April 2012, 21 patients with biopsy or clinically proven juxtapleural pulmonary tuberculomas underwent contrast-enhanced sonography with an intravenous bolus injection of 4.8 mL of a sulfur hexafluoride-filled microbubble contrast agent. Enhancement patterns and functional parameters (time to enhancement, time to peak enhancement, and peak signal intensity) derived from a

BACKGROUND: Medical students acquire latent tuberculosis (TB) infection at a rate of 23 cases/100 person-years. The frequency and impact of occupational TB disease in this population are unknown.
METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed via email and social media to current medical students and recently graduated doctors (2010 - 2015) at two medical schools in Cape Town. Individuals who had developed TB disease as undergraduate students were eligible to participate. Quantitative and qualitative data collected from the questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were analyse

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the perioperative management and the results of surgical treatment of spinal tuberculosis associated with diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: The clinical data were analysed retrospectively from 42 patients with spinal tuberculosis associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were surgically treated between July 2001 and January 2009. There were 22 males and 20 females with an average age of 56.5 years (range, 41-78 years). The disease duration was 4-18 months (mean, 7.5 months). The involved vertebrae included 2 cervical vertebrae, 13 thoracic vertebrae, 17 thoracolumbar ve

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and invasive aspergillosis are distinct infectious diseases that rarely coexist in the same patient. The concurrent occurrence of these infections presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, resulting in complex clinical presentations and potentially adverse outcomes. We present a case report highlighting the diagnostic process, management strategies, and pertinent literature regarding the simultaneous occurrence of pulmonary TB and aspergillosis in a patient following COVID-19 infection.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant cause of mortality globally and can affect various organ systems, leading to diverse clinical presentations. The hematological presentation of TB as symptomatic thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and pancytopenia is exceedingly rare. Antitubercular therapy (ATT) is an effective treatment, but it can have hematological side effects such as anemia and thrombocytopenia, apart from systemic toxicities. Noncompliance and treatment failure are common with long-term use of ATT. We report a case of a 55-year-old man who presented in hypovolemic shock caused by sudden-onse

BACKGROUND: Osteoarticular mycobacterial infections significantly impact patient health by causing severe joint and bone diseases. However, clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with osteoarticular mycobacterial infection.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 74 adult patients diagnosed with osteoarticular mycobacterial infection, including 57 (77%) with tuberculosis (TB) and 17 (23%) with non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection, between January 2009 and January 2023 from a terti

PURPOSE: To explore the value of integrating clinical and computed tomography (CT) features to predict multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR-PTB).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 212 patients with MDR-PTB and 180 patients with drug-sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis (DS-PTB) who referred to our institute in China between January 2016 and March 2021. The clinical and CT characteristics were analyzed and compared between both groups. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent factors that can be used to predict MDR-PTB. Furthermore, 115 pat
