Observations on presumptive lumpy skin disease in native cattle and Asian water buffaloes around the tiger reserves of the central Indian highlands.

CASE HISTORY: Between August and October 2020, following the monsoon, signs of lumpy skin disease (LSD) were recorded and described in 154 oxen, 34 cows, 13 calves (Bos indicus) and two Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) cows belonging to smallholder farmers in 32 villages located around the Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves in the state of Madhya Pradesh, central India. Affected animals were subjected to a full clinical examination and detailed findings were recorded in a clinical register. A semi-structured questionnaire was attached to the existing clinical register format to gather i

Strength of Plantar- and Dorsiflexors Mediates Step Regularity During a High Cognitive Load Situation in a Cross-sectional Cohort of Older and Younger Adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Completing simultaneous tasks while standing or walking (ie, a high cognitive load situation [HCLS]) is inevitable in daily activities and can lead to interference in task performances. Age-related physical and cognitive changes may confound performance variability during HCLS in older and younger adults. Identification of these confounding effects may reveal therapy targets to maintain optimal physical function later in life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of increasing the difficulty levels of an additional motor task and restricting visual inform

Bilateral vestibulopathy: Diagnostic criteria Consensus document of the Classification Committee of the Bárány Society.

This paper describes the diagnostic criteria for bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) by the Classification Committee of the Bárány Society. The diagnosis of BVP is based on the patient history, bedside examination and laboratory evaluation. Bilateral vestibulopathy is a chronic vestibular syndrome which is characterized by unsteadiness when walking or standing, which worsen in darkness and/or on uneven ground, or during head motion. Additionally, patients may describe head or body movement-induced blurred vision or oscillopsia. There are typically no symptoms while sitting or lying down under stati

Subcutaneous Dextrose Injection Above Muscle Insertions of 4/5 Muscles Restores 5/5 Power in Patients With Distant Cerebrovascular Accidents, Multiple Sclerosis, or Radiculopathy: Five Case Reports.

In 2011, a patient with dense distal sensory loss from diabetic neuropathy and 4/5 ankle dorsiflexion power was treated with subcutaneous injection of D5W in the region of the interdigital nerves. Upon injection completion and coming to stand, the patient remarked, "I can feel the floor and move my toes more." Great toe and ankle dorsiflexion could not be overcome by manual testing after injection. Further empirical observations by three authors trialing the method (KCM, BM, KDR) have suggested frequent gains from 4/5 strength (active movement against gravity and resistance) to 5/5 strength (n

Swine industry stakeholders' perception on the use of water-based foam as an emergency mass depopulation method.

The U.S. pork supply chain is vulnerable to various internal and external threats and in need of prompt, comprehensive response plans. Under urgent circumstances, for example in the case of foreign disease incursions, swine farms will have to perform on-farm animal depopulation to prevent disease spread. Several animal depopulation methods including water-based foam (WBF) have been proposed and are under evaluation for feasibility in the field. However, the psychological/emotional impacts of applying depopulation methods for personnel managing and carrying on the tasks are not currently well u

Perioperative Methadone and Ketamine for Postoperative Pain Control in Spinal Surgical Patients: A Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite application of multimodal pain management strategies, patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery frequently report severe postoperative pain. Methadone and ketamine, which are N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonists, have been documented to facilitate postoperative pain control. This study therefore tested the primary hypothesis that patients recovering from spinal fusion surgery who are given ketamine and methadone use less hydromorphone on the first postoperative day than those give methadone alone. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 13

Identification of cholera hotspots in Zambia: A spatiotemporal analysis of cholera data from 2008 to 2017.

The global burden of cholera is increasing, with the majority (60%) of the cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. In Zambia, widespread cholera outbreaks have occurred since 1977, predominantly in the capital city of Lusaka. During both the 2016 and 2018 outbreaks, the Ministry of Health implemented cholera vaccination in addition to other preventative and control measures, to stop the spread and control the outbreak. Given the limitations in vaccine availability and the logistical support required for vaccination, oral cholera vaccine (OCV) is now recommended for use in the high risk areas ("

An examination of the epiphytic nature of Gambierdiscus toxicus, a dinoflagellate involved in ciguatera fish poisoning.

Twenty-four specimen of macroalgae were collected in nearshore waters of the island of Hawaii, identified, and maintained to examine how the epiphytic relationship between Gambierdiscus toxicus (isolate BIG12) varied among the macroalgal species. Gambierdiscus cells were introduced to petri dishes containing 100 g samples of each macroalgal host, which were examined at two, 16, 24, and every 24 to 72 hours thereafter, over a 29-day period. Gambierdiscus proliferated in the presence of some host species (e.g., Galaxaura marginata and Jania sp.), but grew little in the presence of other species

Aquaporin expression patterns in the developing mouse salivary gland.

Little is known about the presence of the various membrane-located water channels, aquaporins (AQP), during the prenatal and postnatal development of the mouse submandibular salivary gland (SMG). To learn more about AQPs in the developing aspect of salivary glands, we investigated trends in the expression patterns of several AQPs using the embryonic, early postnatal, and young adult mouse SMGs as models. We have chosen AQPs previously found in salivary glands in other animals. Transcripts of AQPs 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8 were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and qu

Effects of exercise training on excitation-contraction coupling, calcium dynamics and protein expression in the heart of the Neotropical fish Brycon amazonicus.

Matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) is a great swimming performance teleost fish from the Amazon basin. However, the possible cardiac adaptations of this ability are still unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to investigate the effects of prolonged exercise (EX group - 60days under 0.4BL·s-1) on ventricular contractility by (i) in-vitro analysis of contractility comparing the relative roles of sodium/calcium exchanger (NCX) and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) in the excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling and (ii) molecular analysis of NCX, sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA2) and pho

Prolonged exposure to intermittent alcohol vapors blunts hypothalamic responsiveness to immune and non-immune signals.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that long-term alcohol treatment blunts the ACTH response to alcohol itself, as well as to other stresses, and is accompanied by decreased pituitary responsiveness to vasopressin (VP), but not corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). The present work aims to determine the relevance of changes in CRF and VP receptors in the pituitary gland and/or peptide stores of CRF neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, the areas that are most directly involved in ACTH release. METHODS: Intact male rats were exposed to alcohol using a new vapor de

Is it relevant to distinguish scapulothoracic abnormal motion (STAM) type in professional overhead athletes?

BACKGROUND: Scapular dyskinesis, further characterized within the broader concept of scapulothoracic abnormal motion (STAM), is common in both symptomatic and asymptomatic overhead athletes. While STAM type 3 (winging) is a distinct pathological entity, types 1 and 2 remain less well defined and may represent sport-related adaptations rather than disease. The clinical relevance, prevalence, and sport-specific patterns of these conditions are still unclear. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the prevalence of STAM types 1 and 2 in the dominant and non-dominant shoulders of profe
