Heat- and Cold-Related Mortality Burden in the US From 2000 to 2020.

IMPORTANCE: With a warming climate, it is essential to have up-to-date and spatiotemporally resolved quantification of the national mortality burden attributable to nonoptimal temperatures. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mortality burden associated with heat and cold in the entire contiguous US from 2000 to 2020. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case series assessed death records from the National Center for Health Statistics for all counties within the contiguous US from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2020. The study used 2-stage modeling, with the first stage being a case-crossover

Determining hydrological flow paths to enhance restoration in impaired mangrove wetlands.

The restoration of mangroves has gained prominence in recent decades. Hydrological rehabilitation has been undertaken to connect impaired mangroves with the sea, lagoons or estuaries. Because mangrove hydrodynamics occurs on the surface and interstitial spaces in the sediment, we propose to determine the hydrological flow paths to restore the hydrological regimes of the impaired mangroves. The hydrological flow paths were determined through a micro basin analysis based on microtopographic data to generate a digital elevation model. Applying this methodological approach, the hydrology of an imp

Risk factors for human infection with West Nile Virus in Connecticut: a multi-year analysis.

BACKGROUND: The optimal method for early prediction of human West Nile virus (WNV) infection risk remains controversial. We analyzed the predictive utility of risk factor data for human WNV over a six-year period in Connecticut. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Using only environmental variables or animal sentinel data was less predictive than a model that considered all variables. In the final parsimonious model, population density, growing degree-days, temperature, WNV positive mosquitoes, dead birds and WNV positive birds were significant predictors of human infection risk, with an ROC value of 0.7

Predicting the burden of acute malnutrition in drought-prone regions of Kenya: A statistical analysis.

In drought-prone regions, timely and granular predictions of the burden of acute malnutrition could support decision-making. We explored whether routinely collected and/or publicly available data could be used to predict the prevalence of global and severe acute malnutrition, as well as the mean weight-for-height Z-score and middle-upper-arm circumference for age Z-score, in arid- and semi-arid regions of Kenya, where drought is projected to increase in frequency and intensity. The study covered six counties of northern Kenya and the period 2015-2019, during which a major drought occurred. To

Seasonal and inter-annual drivers of yellow fever transmission in South America.

In the last 20 years yellow fever (YF) has seen dramatic changes to its incidence and geographic extent, with the largest outbreaks in South America since 1940 occurring in the previously unaffected South-East Atlantic coast of Brazil in 2016-2019. While habitat fragmentation and land-cover have previously been implicated in zoonotic disease, their role in YF has not yet been examined. We examined the extent to which vegetation, land-cover, climate and host population predicted the numbers of months a location reported YF per year and by each month over the time-period. Two sets of models were

Urban flood numerical modeling and hydraulic performance of a drainage network: A case study in Algiers, Algeria.

Urban sewer system management is challenging due to its higher vulnerability to flooding caused by rapid urbanization and climate change. For local decision-makers, storm water management is essential for urban planning and development. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to develop a numerical model for the sewerage network of the central catchment area of Algiers since it has experienced frequent overflows during the winter season. For this purpose, to model the sewerage networks, the model was built by coupling ArcGIS with MIKE URBAN. Its calibration and validation were performed

An unrecognized mode of small particles in the lower stratosphere.

Analysis of recent in situ data reveals a persistent mode of organic-rich aerosol particles in the stratosphere below 19 kilometers at nitrous oxide (N2O) > 270 parts per billion by volume, with a number geometric mean diameter of ~0.03 to 0.11 μm (0.08 to 0.2 μm in surface and 0.11 to 0.3 μm in volume). This mode, composed mostly of organic-rich particles transported from the troposphere, is poorly sensed by satellites and most balloon-borne optical measurements but dominates the surface area for heterogeneous reactions and the sink for condensable vapors. These small particles grow in size a

Heat Exposure Definitions in Temperature-Mortality Studies: Towards a Harmonisation Framework.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: We reviewed how heat exposure is defined using thresholds and reference temperatures derived from the temperature-mortality exposure-response curve in time-series and case-crossover studies using distributed lag non-linear models and propose a harmonisation framework relevant to climate change research and heat disaster preparedness. RECENT FINDINGS: The rapid review identified variation across studies in heat thresholds and reference temperatures, affecting the comparability of estimates. A case study in Spain illustrates how the minimum mortality temperature (MMT) app

Coadsorption of Atmospheric Surface-Active Organics at the Aqueous Interface: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

Organic compounds are key components of atmospheric aerosols and often act as surfactants in cloud droplets and fine particles. While the interfacial behavior of individual species in binary systems is fairly well-understood, less is known about interactions between multiple surface-active organics. We use classical molecular dynamics simulations to examine how short-chain (C3) and long-chain (C8) organics coadsorb at the air-water interface. Despite differences in functional groups and surface activity, all mixtures form mixed monolayers, with chain organization driven primarily by lateral va

Heat stress exposure and incidence of chronic kidney disease.

Long-term repeated heat stress may contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this ecological study, we examined country-level associations between heat stress exposure and CKD incidence using data from 174 countries during 1990-2021. Annual numbers of days with four heat stress levels (moderate, strong, very strong, and extreme) were assessed using the Universal Thermal Climate Index. A weighted heat stress score was generated from these four levels. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the associations. Each additional day of moderate, strong, very strong, and extreme heat s

Equity, regulation and Te Tiriti o Waitangi: a rapid review of Putting Patients First.

The Crown's health workforce reforms, Putting Patients First: Modernising health workforce regulation (PPF),1 emerge in a political climate that is actively dismantling Māori health gains, undermining tino rangatiratanga and reframing equity as "needs not race". Using rapid Tiriti review-an adaptation of critical Tiriti analysis-we assessed the proposal's alignment with Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We found that PPF did not align well with the preamble or the articles of Te Tiriti. There was no equity analysis; no acknowledgement of hauora as taonga, limited Māori involvement in decision making, eras

Diagnosis of the weakened global land carbon sink enhancement in recent decades: When and where the shifts occurred.

The terrestrial carbon sink is a major regulator of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) growth, yet its long-term trajectory and stability remain uncertain. Linear trend-based assessments may obscure nonlinear evolution and trend shifts. Here, we reassess global terrestrial carbon sink dynamics from 1981 to 2020 using ensemble outputs from dynamic global vegetation models combined with ensemble empirical mode decomposition. We find that although the global land carbon sink has approximately doubled, its rate of enhancement has declined sharply, falling to nearly half of its early-period value. Th

Plume-induced emissions of deep methane linked to the end-Guadalupian mass extinction.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, and massive CH4 emissions have the capacity to cause rapid and catastrophic climate effects. Here we report findings of large amounts of CH4 occurring as an important vapor phase in melt inclusions trapped by magmas in the plume-related Permian Emeishan large igneous province (LIP). Lines of evidence indicate that the CH4 is dominantly abiogenic and primarily had a mantle origin. Undegassed magmas are estimated to contain ~ 0.03% (by weight) CH4, which coincides with the relatively low oxygen fugacities of primary Emeishan LIP magmas. Our findings demo

Building Resilience in Hemodialysis Care: A Program Report on the British Columbia Hemodialysis Emergency Support Team.

This program report describes the development and implementation of the Hemodialysis Emergency Support Team (HEST) in British Columbia, an initiative led by BC Renal in partnership with the province's 5 health authorities. The HEST was created in response to the growing risk of climate-related emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and water shortages, with the goal of ensuring continuity of care for patients receiving maintenance dialysis during service disruptions. The report outlines the provincial strategy behind HEST, including capacity building during non-emergency periods, strengthening

The expansion of the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) and evidence of its establishment in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, Nevada, United States of America.

Aedes aegypti (L.) is the primary vector of several arboviruses, including chikungunya, dengue, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. While models have predicted a low likelihood for establishment of Ae. aegypti in the arid climate of the Las Vegas Metropolitan (Statistical) Area, United States, surveillance indicates it is established. Since its initial detection in 2017, its distribution has spread over the Las Vegas metro area, which has low precipitation and hot summers. We mapped the spread of Ae. aegypti over 5 yr using adult catches. A total of 407 census tracts in metro Las Vegas were survey

Genomic diversity of Vibrio spp. and metagenomic analysis of pathogens in Florida Gulf coastal waters following Hurricane Ian.

Evidence suggests warming temperatures are associated with the spread of potentially pathogenic Vibrio spp. and the emergence of human disease globally. Following Hurricane Ian, the State of Florida reported a sharp increase in the number of reported Vibrio spp. infections and deaths. Hence, monitoring of pathogens, including vibrios, and environmental parameters influencing their occurrence is critical to public health. Here, DNA sequencing was used to investigate the genomic diversity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, both potential human pathogens, in Florida coastal waters

Kinetics of severe dengue virus infection and development of gut pathology in mice.

Dengue virus, an arbovirus, causes an estimated 100 million symptomatic infections annually and is an increasing threat as the mosquito range expands with climate change. Dengue epidemics are a substantial strain on local economies and health infrastructure, and an understanding of what drives severe disease may enable treatments to help reduce hospitalizations. Factors exacerbating dengue disease are debated, but gut-related symptoms are much more frequent in severe than mild cases. Using mouse models of dengue infection, we have shown that inflammation and damage are earlier and more severe
