Uveal melanomas are diverse in their clinical features and behaviour. More than 90% involve the choroid, the remainder being confined to the ciliary body and iris. Most patients experience visual loss and more than a third require enucleation, in some cases because of pain. Diagnosis is based on slit-lamp biomicroscopy and/or ophthalmoscopy, with ultrasonography, autofluorescence photography, and/or biopsy in selected cases. PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and outcomes of primary orbital implantation during evisceration/enucleation for endophthalmitis, specifically analyzing the risk of implant exposure/extrusion.

Reports have shown that severe midface trauma causes blindness and visual impairment but information from sub-Saharan Africa is sparse. A retrospective analysis was carried out of patients who sustained trauma to the midface and subsequently lost vision in one or both eyes. AIMS: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of internal resection in the treatment of malignant melanoma of the choroid.
METHODS: 32 consecutive patients with histopathologically proved malignant choroidal melanomas were treated with internal resection. 29 of the 32 (90.6%) tumours were within 2 disc diameters of the optic nerve or fovea. PURPOSE: To evaluate the anatomical and functional outcomes of endoresection and adjuvant ruthenium (Ru)-106 brachytherapy for uveal melanoma (UM).
METHODS: Retrospective case series of 15 UM patients (15 eyes) treated at our center (Careggi University Hospital, Florence).
RESULTS: Six patients (40%) were male and nine were female (60%). The mean age of patients at the time of treatment was 61.6 years (±19.41). The mean BCVA at baseline was 20/50.
