Soil-transmitted helminthiases: nationwide survey in China.

A total of 2848 study sites, with about 500 people in each, were randomly sampled for this investigation which covered a total population of 1 477 742. By stool examinations using the Kato-Katz thick-smear and larval-culture techniques, overall prevalences of 47.0%, 18.8%, and 17.2% were obtained for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworm infections, respectively. The number of infections due to Ascaris, Trichuris, and hookworm was estimated as 531 million, 212 million, and 194 million, respectively. Egg counts showed that 75-95% of the subjects had light infections. Higher pr

Water balance and its relation to fermentation acid production in the intestinal parasites Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda) and Moniliformis moniliformis (Acanthocephala).

Water balance and its relation to carbohydrate metabolism was examined in Hymenolepis diminuta in parallel with the putative osmoconformer Moniliformis moniliformis. Worms were removed from rat intestines, weighed, and incubated (37 C) 1 hr in rat serum and various salines, some with mannitol to vary osmotic concentration from 150 to 400 mOsm/L. Worms were removed at 15-min intervals, weighed, and returned to the test solution. Rat serum and a Ringer's saline (pH 7.4 and 300 mOsm/L) with or without 5 mM glucose were isotonic to M. moniliformis, which behaved like an osmometer, shrinking, or sw

Mass treatment of intestinal parasites among Ethiopian immigrants.

Intestinal parasites are common among the Ethiopian immigrants to Israel and mass treatment is necessary to prevent local transmission. For this purpose, stool samples obtained from the immigrants in absorption centers were examined. Of 5,412 samples obtained, 4,399 (81.3%) were positive: 2,644 (54.2%) for Necator americanus, 2,273 (46.6%) for Schistosoma mansoni, 990 (20.3%) for Ascaris lumbricoides, 1,040 (21.3%) for Hymenolepsis nana, 940 (19.2%) for Trichuris trichiura, 219 (4.5%) for Strongyloides stercoralis, 17 (0.4%) for Fasciola hepatica, 551 (11.3%) for Giardia lamblia, and 499 (9.2%

Intestinal helminths of hospital patients in Kavango territory, Namibia.

In-patient and out-patient faeces examination reports from the State Hospital in Rundu, Kavango territory, Namibia, gave some idea of the prevalence of helminthic infections. 4174 specimens were examined over a 29-month period. Hookworm (6.8%) and Strongyloides (2.7%) were the most common infections, followed by Hymenolepis nana (1%), Schistosoma mansoni (1%) and Taenia sp. (0.9%). S. mansoni was more common in males than females, hookworm more common in females than males, and H. nana was most common in the pre-school group. Promiscuous defaecation on the banks of the Okavango river provides

Age-related prevalence, intensity and frequency distribution of gastrointestinal helminth infection in urban slum children from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The gastrointestinal helminth infection status of 1574 children living in a slum area of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was assessed by quantitative coprology. Almost two-thirds were infected with Trichuris trichiura, 49.6% with Ascaris lumbricoides, and 5.3% with hookworm. Infection prevalence rose rapidly to a stable asymptote at 7 years of age, and the age-intensity profile was convex with maximal values in the 5-10 year age classes. This pattern was the same for males and females, but differed markedly between different ethnic groups. The frequency distributions of A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura

Intestinal helminths in an adult hospital population in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea: relationship with anaemia, eosinophilia and asthma.

The principal helminths present in adult medical patients at Goroka Base Hospital were hookworm, probably Necator americanus, (in 83%), Ascaris lumbricoides (in 14%) and Trichuris trichiura (in 16%). Enterobius vermicularis was also present (in 1.6%), and Hymenolepis nana in a single patient. Females were infected more frequently with Ascaris than males and they had higher egg counts of both Ascaris and Trichuris than males, and the difference was statistically significant. Haemoglobin values were significantly negatively correlated with hookworm egg counts in both males and females. Eosinophi

[1st clinical therapeutic trial of mebendazole in some cases of helmenthiasis in Cuba].

Due to the difficulties faced in the etiologic approach of trichuriasis as a result of the intolerance, reduced efficacy and toxicity of some drugs a clinical-therapeutic trial of mebendazole was started in 5-64 year-old patients with some form of helmynthiasis as trichuriasis, enterobiasis or necatoriasis. Coproparasitological examinations carried out 15, 30 and 45 days after the ingestion of the drug depicted an excellent cure rate (98% in trichuriasis; 100% in enterobiasis; and 85% in necatoriasis). Very few side-effects were found. This is the first clinical-therapeutic trial of mebendazol

Prevalence and Epidemiological Patterns of Enterobius vermicularis Infection in Thailand: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Enterobiasis, caused by Enterobius vermicularis, is recognized as a common intestinal helminthiasis worldwide. Despite multiple surveys in Thailand, no pooled synthesis at the country level has been carried out to evaluate prevalence patterns, temporal trends, or vulnerable groups. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken to provide an updated and comprehensive estimate of the prevalence of E. vermicularis in Thailand and to identify high-risk populations for targeted interventions. METHODS: The systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accor…
