Chest CT in patients after lung transplantation: A retrospective analysis to evaluate impact on image quality and radiation dose using spectral filtration tin-filtered imaging.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a 150kV spectral filtration chest imaging protocol (Sn150kVp) combined with advanced modeled iterative reconstruction (ADMIRE) on radiation dose and image quality in patients after lung-transplantation. METHODS: This study included 102 patients who had unenhanced chest-CT examinations available on both, a second-generation dual-source CT (DSCT) using standard protocol (100kVp, filtered-back-projection) and, on a third-generation DSCT using Sn150kVp protocol with ADMIRE. Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) was measured in 6 standar

T2-Weighted intracranial vessel wall imaging at 7 Tesla using a DANTE-prepared variable flip angle turbo spin echo readout (DANTE-SPACE).

PURPOSE: To optimize intracranial vessel wall imaging (VWI) at 7T for sharp wall depiction and high boundary contrast. METHODS: A variable flip angle turbo spin echo scheme (SPACE) was optimized for VWI. SPACE provides black-blood contrast, but has less crushing effect on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). However, a delay alternating with nutation for tailored excitation (DANTE) preparation suppresses the signal from slowly moving spins of a few mm per second. Therefore, we optimized a DANTE-preparation module for 7T. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and signal ratio for v

Evaluation of velocity-sensitized and acceleration-sensitized NCE-MRA for below-knee peripheral arterial disease.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of velocity- and acceleration-sensitized noncontrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (NCE-MRA) of the infrageniculate arteries using contrast-enhanced MRA (CE-MRA) as a reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with symptoms of peripheral arterial disease were recruited. Each patient's infrageniculate arterial tree was examined using a velocity-dependent flow-sensitized dephasing (VEL-FSD) technique, an acceleration-dependent (ACC-FSD) technique, and our conventional CE-MRA technique performed at 1.5T. The images we

Multi-modality morphological correlation of axillary lymph nodes.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study is to develop a computerized method that identifies a specific axillary lymph node (ALN) seen on ultrasound (US) with its most likely corresponding node on breast MRI (BMRI). This goal is an important step in developing a preoperative non-invasive method for staging breast cancer on the basis of multi-modality imaging. METHODS: Twenty patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer were scanned on US and MRI. Two expert breast imaging radiologists independently correlated ALNs seen on US with BMRI, and this correlation was used as the gold standard. To correlate AL

Fully automatic nonrigid registration-based local motion estimation for motion-corrected iterative cardiac CT reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Cardiac computed tomography is a rapidly emerging technique for noninvasive diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, the cardiac motion continues to be a limiting factor. Electrocardiogram-gated cardiac computed tomography reconstruction methods yield excellent results, but these are limited in their temporal resolution due to the mechanical movement of the gantry, and lead to residual motion blurring artifacts. If the motion of the cardiac region of interest is determined, motion compensated gated reconstructions can be applied to reduce motion artifacts. In this paper it

MR-Based Radiomics for Differential Diagnosis between Cystic Pituitary Adenoma and Rathke Cleft Cyst.

BACKGROUND: It is often tricky to differentiate cystic pituitary adenoma from Rathke cleft cyst with visual inspection because of similar MRI presentations between them. We aimed to design an MR-based radiomics model for improving differential diagnosis between them. METHODS: Conventional diagnostic MRI data (T1-,T2-, and postcontrast T1-weighted MR images) were obtained from 215 pathologically confirmed patients (105 cases with cystic pituitary adenoma and the other 110 cases with Rathke cleft cyst) and were divided into training (n = 172) and test sets (n = 43). MRI radiomics features were

The role of 3D cinematic rendering in the evaluation of upper extremity trauma.

Traumatic upper extremity injuries are a common cause of emergency department visits, comprising between 10-30% of traumatic injury visits. Timely and accurate evaluation is important to prevent severe complications such as permanent deformities, ischemia, or even death. Computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA) are the favored non-invasive imaging techniques for assessing upper extremity trauma, playing a crucial role in both the treatment planning and decision-making processes for such injuries. In CT postprocessing, a novel 3D rendering method, cinematic rendering (CR), employs soph

Machine vision extracted plant movement for early detection of plant water stress.

A methodology was established for early, non-contact, and quantitative detection of plant water stress with machine vision extracted plant features. Top-projected canopy area (TPCA) of the plants was extracted from plant images using image-processing techniques. Water stress induced plant movement was decoupled from plant diurnal movement and plant growth using coefficient of relative variation of TPCA (CRV[TPCA)] and was found to be an effective marker for water stress detection. Threshold value of CRV(TPCA) as an indicator of water stress was determined by a parametric approach. The effectiv

Multi-parametric ultrasound criteria for internal carotid artery disease-comparison with CT angiography.

INTRODUCTION: The German Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (known by its acronym DEGUM) recently proposed a novel multi-parametric ultrasound approach for comprehensive and accurate assessment of extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) steno-occlusive disease. We determined the agreement between duplex ultrasonography (DUS) interpreted by the DEGUM criteria and CT angiography (CTA) for grading of extracranial ICA steno-occlusive disease. METHODS: Consecutive patients with acute cerebral ischemia underwent DUS and CTA. Internal carotid artery stenosis was graded according to the DEGUM-recom

Imaging of neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is an infection of the central nervous system by the Taenia solium larvae, and is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in endemic regions. The natural history of parenchymal NCC lesions can be divided into 4 stages with unique imaging and clinical features. Evaluation of cysticerci is challenging on conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography, and is significantly improved with MR cysternography techniques. Differentiation of NCC lesions from metastatic disease and pyogenic abscesses can be improved with advanced MR imaging including (1)H

A proposal of an open PET geometry.

The long patient port of a PET scanner tends to put stress on patients, especially patients with claustrophobia. It also prevents doctors and technicians from taking care of patients during scanning. In this paper, we proposed an 'open PET' geometry, which consists of two axially separated detector rings. A long and continuous field-of-view (FOV) including a 360 degrees opened gap between two detector rings can be imaged enabling a fully 3D image reconstruction of all the possible lines-of-response. The open PET will become practical if iterative image reconstruction methods are applied even t
