Profile changes in orthodontic patients treated with mandibular advancement surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The potential to improve facial esthetics is often the deciding factor in treatment planning of borderline orthodontic patients who can be treated with either orthognathic surgery or dental camouflage. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of skeletal and soft-tissue Class II disharmony necessary before a significant esthetic benefit is derived from mandibular advancement surgery. METHODS: Twenty laypeople, 20 orthodontists, and 20 oral surgeons rated the attractiveness of before and after treatment profiles of 20 mandibular advancement patients using a 5-point L

[A novel protocol for hyperdivergent Class II surgery: innovation or breaking a taboo?].

The widespread distribution via Internet of images and even videos showing facial surgery has considerably contributed to our knowledge of orthodontic-surgical treatment. The never-ending increase in the number of patients receiving surgery has given us food for thought and statistics. If we are to progress further, we need to innovative in the area of surgical technique as well as in our clinical and psychological approach to patients. We have endeavoured to move forward from the idea of "straightforward" malocclusion repair to that of "morphofunctional surgery of the face" by emphasizing the

Palatally impacted maxillary canines.

In a special article entitled, "Impacted Maxillary Canines: A Review," Samir E. Bishara states: "The ectopic eruption and impaction of maxillary permanent canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem. The diagnosis and treatment of this problem usually requires the expertise and cooperation of the general practitioner, the paediatric dentist, the oral surgeon, and the periodontist, as well as the orthodontist." We will review the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of impacted maxillary canines. A technique will be outlined that allows a competent orthodontic clinician to singly, efficie

Distraction in a case of otopalatodigital syndrome type II.

INTRODUCTION: Otopalatodigital syndrome type II is a rare X-linked recessive disorder with generalized skeletal dysplasia and hearing anomalies. Its features include conductive hearing loss, unusual facies, cleft palate, micrognathia, and overlapping flexed fingers and toes. It is a more lethal variant of otopalatodigital syndrome type I. There are many consistently reported craniofacial and dental findings; however, no case has been published in dental literature. CASE REPORT: We report a case of otopalatodigital syndrome type II with micrognathia, cleft of the soft palate, and partial anodo

Relationship between internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint and dentofacial morphology in women with anterior open bite.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite is known to be associated with internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This study examined the relationships between internal derangement and dentofacial morphology in women with anterior open bite. METHODS: Fifty-one women with anterior open bite were enrolled in this study. The sample was divided into 3 groups based on magnetic resonance imaging of bilateral TMJs: normal disk position, disk displacement with reduction, and disk displacement without reduction. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the 3 groups with respect to the

Case report: forced eruption and implant site development.

It is now possible to use the orthodontic extrusion of periodontally compromised teeth to facilitate the development of a future implant site in an area where the amount of bone in the inciso-apical dimension would otherwise have been inadequate. The purpose of this case report was to analyze the hard and soft tissue changes when forced eruption is used for implant site development.

Treatment of infra-occluded primary molars in patients with dental ageneses.

When dental agenesis is encountered, several treatment solutions can be considered: extraction of the primary tooth and closure of the space or, alternatively, conservation of the space with the primary tooth still on the arch until a prosthesis can be placed. In the presence of premolar agenesis, the corresponding primary molar may be infra-occluded relative to the occlusal plane. This situation complicates the treatment plan. Depending on the clinical setting, it can be useful to restore occlusal contacts using composite overlays. We will demonstrate this treatment option via two clinical ca

Interdisciplinary Study of the Clinical Phenotype of Patients with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) in Dental Practice: A Cross-Sectional Clinical-Statistical Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder causing progressive heterotopic ossification. The dental phenotype has never been systematically characterised. We quantified dental pathologies and oral health-related quality of life across three age groups of genetically confirmed FOP patients and compared them with 156 matched healthy controls (2022-2025). Methods: A total of 52 FOP patients (Group I: 1-5 y, n = 14; Group II: 6-17 y, n = 21; Group III: 18-35 y, n = 17) underwent standardised dental examination (Decayed, Missing, and Filled

Multidisciplinary approach to a nonsyndromic oligodontia patient using advanced surgical techniques.

Treatment of a woman suffering from oligodontia and multiple diastemata with insufficient alveolar ridges in both the maxilla and mandible is described in this clinical report. The total number of missing teeth was 11 (excluding the wisdom teeth). The treatment strategy consisted of an interdisciplinary team approach of orthodontic, surgical, and prosthodontic phases. Sinus floor augmentation, alveolar ridge augmentation via vertical alveolar distraction, and lateral augmentation with ramus graft procedures were performed after fixed orthodontic treatment and prior to dental implant placement.

Total distalization of the maxillary arch in a patient with skeletal Class II malocclusion.

In nongrowing patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion, premolar extraction or maxillary molar distalization can be used as camouflage treatment. Orthodontic miniscrew implants are widely used for this purpose because they do not produce undesirable reciprocal effects and do not depend on the patient's cooperation. This article reports on maxillary molar distalization by using miniscrew implants to correct a Class II problem. The main considerations of molar distalization treatment with miniscrew implants are discussed.

Orthodontic treatment in a patient with sickle cell anemia.

Sickle cell anemia is a common hereditary hematologic disease. It affects many systems and tissues in the body, including the mouth. Delayed tooth eruption, an uncommon degree of periodontitis, alterations in the cells of the tongue surface, hypomaturation and hypomineralization in enamel and dentin, pulp calcifications, hypercementosis, and bone alterations resulting in maxillary protrusion and formation of a thick trabecular pattern are some oral manifestations of the disease. The aim of this study was to report the orthodontic treatment of a patient with sickle cell anemia. Treatment consis

Rapid tooth movement and orthodontic treatment using dentoalveolar distraction (DAD). Long-term (5 years) follow-up of a Class II case.

The purpose of this report is to describe the dentoalveolar distraction (DAD) technique and to present its effects on the surrounding structures by presenting a Class II case. A 15-year-old skeletal and dental Class II female patient with an overjet of 9 mm was treated by DAD osteogenesis. A custom-made, rigid, tooth-borne intraoral distraction device was used for rapid canine retraction. Osteotomies surrounding the canines were made to achieve rapid movement of the canines within the dentoalveolar segment, in compliance with distraction osteogenesis principles. The amount of canine retraction

Bone scintigraphy of human temporomandibular joints during Herbst treatment: a case report.

Bone scintigraphy results were compared with changes shown on orthopantomographic radiographs in a patient with facial asymmetry, before, during, and after Herbst treatment, and followed up with control of growth activity in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) after long-term retention. The present study showed that new bone formation (modelling) was initiated asymmetrically in TMJs during treatment. The results indicate that late development of right/left asymmetry in the occlusion can be corrected and normalized using the Herbst appliance therapy, stimulating a differentiated 'catch up' grow
