BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorders frequently co-occur with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet many individuals lack adequate treatment. Existing interventions often prioritise reducing arousal over promoting safety and self-soothing, tending to neglect the bodily experience.
AIMS: This randomised clinical within-person pilot study examined the effects of the nest position, a physiotherapeutic intervention designed to enhance safety and self-soothing, on patients with dissociative disorders and healthy controls (German Clinical Trials Register No.: DRKS00030669).
METHOD: Eighteen pat

BACKGROUND: Bradycardia and dysautonomia observed during SARS-Cov2 infection suggests involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Limited data exists on ANS dysregulation and its association with outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) related to COVID-19 (C-ARDS) or other etiologies (NC-ARDS).
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore sympathovagal balance, assessed by heart rate variability (HRV), and its clinical prognostic value in C-ARDS compared with NC-ARDS.
METHODS: A single-center, prospective case-control study was conducted. Consecutive patients meeting A

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is increasingly common in developed countries. The pathogenesis involved in the symptoms includes gastric acid, esophageal or gastric motility disorders, visceral hypersensitivity, and lower esophageal sphincter (LES) dysfunction. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most effective treatment, but long-term use can lead to gastric hypoacidity and nutrient deficiencies.
AIMS: This study exams the potential of meridian acupoint stimulation to modulate visceral hypersensitivity and LES tone in patients who are dependent or have failed PPIs. Scal

Changes in cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation observed in psychiatric disorders may be mitigated by antidepressants. We meta-analyzed and systematically reviewed studies examining antidepressants' effects on ANS outcomes, including heart rate variability (HRV). We conducted a PRISMA/MOOSE-compliant search of PubMed and Scopus until March 28th, 2022. We included randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) and pre-post studies, regardless of diagnosis. We pooled results in random-effects meta-analyses, pooling homogeneous study designs and outcomes. We conducted sensitivity analys

AIM OF THE STUDY: Overactivation of the parasympathetic nervous system can lead to reflex syncope (RS) and, in extreme cases, trigger an unusual and underrecognized form of cardiac arrest. We characterized the epidemiology and prognosis of reflex-mediated cardiac arrest (RMCA) and hypothesized it is associated with intervenable patient factors.
METHODS: This retrospective case-control study examined RMCAs at two academic hospitals from 1/2016 to 6/2022 using a resuscitation quality improvement database. RMCA cases were identified as cardiac arrests preceded by vagal trigger(s). Cases of RS, d…

If a trauma (or infection) exceeds the body's evolutionary design limits, a stress response is activated to quickly restore homeostasis. However, when the injury severity score is high, death is often imminent. The goal of this review is to provide an update on the effect of small-volume adenosine, lidocaine and Mg2+ (ALM) therapy on increasing survival and blunting secondary injury after non-compressible hemorrhagic shock and other trauma and infective/endotoxemic states. Two standout features of ALM therapy are: (1) resuscitation occurs at permissive hypotensive blood pressures (MAPs 50-60 m

Hyperoxia has been described to induce bradycardia by direct stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Also, hyperoxia has been found to increase blood pressure by an elevation of vascular resistance. However, the latter effect itself would induce bradycardia by baroreceptor stimulation. This single-arm monocentric retrospective study aims to evaluate the correlation between these effects by investigating the relation between oxygen (O2) administration and heart rate over time. Data were collected from 23 patients without cardiovascular problems undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (2…

Diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) is a common and serious complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), is manifested by nerve fiber injury in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve of the autonomic nervous system, and causes hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, silent myocardial infarction, and sudden death. Our previous study observed that P2X3 receptor in superior cervical ganglia in rat was associated with sympathetic neuropathy caused by myocardial ischemia. However, whether the P2X3 receptor is involved in the diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy and the underlying mechanisms rema

Catecholaminergic C1 cells reside in the rostral and intermediate portions of the ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and can be activated by hypoxia. These neurons regulate the hypothalamic pituitary axis via direct projections to the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVH) and regulate the autonomic nervous system via projections to sympathetic and parasympathetic preganglionic neurons. Based on the various effects attributed to the C1 cells and what is currently known of their synaptic inputs, our hypothesis is that acute hypoxia (AH) activates RVLM projecting catecholaminergic neurons to PVH.

AIMS: Micturition and continence are largely under the control of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). In this study, we analyzed ANS function using autonomic cardiovascular (CV) testing in females with idiopathic overactive bladder syndrome (iOAB) versus control females. Our hypothesis was that ANS dysfunction could comprise part of the pathophysiology of iOAB.
METHODS: Twenty-three females with iOAB and 29 controls were enrolled into this prospective study. Patients performed CV autonomic testing, including two sympathetic tests (hand grip exercise and cold pressor test), two parasympathetic

Reptiles change heart rate and blood flow patterns in response to heating and cooling, thereby decreasing the behavioural cost of thermoregulation. We tested the hypothesis that locally produced vasoactive substances, nitric oxide and prostaglandins, mediate the cardiovascular response of reptiles to heat. Heart rate and blood pressure were measured in eight crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) during heating and cooling and while sequentially inhibiting nitric-oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase enzymes. Heart rate and blood pressure were significantly higher during heating than during cooling in al

We determined the changes in blood pressure, pulse rate, and heart rate variability during dental surgery in hypertensive patients. The study included 18 essential hypertensives and 18 age and sex matched normotensive controls who underwent tooth extraction at our hospital. Holter electrocardiographic monitoring was used to determine the power spectrum of R-R variability before and during dental surgery. The low frequency (LF: 0.041 to 0.140 Hz), high frequency (HF: 0.140 to 0.500 Hz), and total spectral powers (TF: 0.000 to 4.000 Hz) were calculated, and the ratio of LF to HF and the percenta

By the use of light microscopic (LM) immunohistochemistry, the presence of peptides and of dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) in nerves supplying mammalian (guinea pig, rat, cat, pig, mouse, human) lymph nodes were examined. In all species, lymph nodes of various somatic and visceral regions were found to contain nerve fibers which stained for neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or DBH. SP- and CGRP-immunoreactive (ir) fibers completely overlapped and exhibited the widest distri
