Effect of visual impairment on neuropsychological test performance.

Three vision-dependent neuropsychological tests of visual processing--Benton's Facial Recognition (FR), Judgment of Line Orientation (JLO), and Visual Form Discrimination (VFD)--were administered to subjects on the same day as routine ophthalmic examination. Seventeen subjects had Jaeger near vision of J5 (analogous to 20/50) or worse resulting from refractive error, while 13 control subjects had normal near vision of J1. Neuropsychological test scores of these groups were compared with each other and also the published standardization group for each test. Low near-vision subjects' performance

[Visual compromise of automobile drivers by frontal photo-flash in mesoptic conditions].

The time for recovery of recognition of an optotype presented at a distance of 40 m subsequent to exposure to a flash gun (Eso company, Tettnang; flash energy 200 Ws, duration 1/1000 s; distance 10 m) was studied on 97 subjects aged 20 to 83 years. A Landolt-ring (contrast 1:5, diameter 29 cm), mounted on a disk (diameter 58 cm) which could be rotated in steps of 45 degrees served as a test target. The flash gun could be dimmed down by a red filter (Schott RG 665). The tests were performed at night without additional illumination except the low beam of the car. The flash gun was foveally fixat

Sensory Representations Supporting Memory Specificity: Age Effects on Behavioral and Neural Discriminability.

Older adults' difficulty in distinguishing between old and new information contributes to memory decline, which may occur because older adults are less likely than young adults to retrieve specific sensory details necessary to distinguish between similar items. In male and female human subjects, the present study measured the extent of age differences in the specificity of memory representations using a false memory paradigm in which studied items were linked to retrieval items at multiple levels of similarity. Older adults showed poorer behavioral discrimination than young adults, driven prim

The modulatory effects of facial cues and familiarity in face recognition: a behavioral and eye-tracking investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Face recognition is essential for social interaction, yet the extent to which internal facial features and external facial cues contribute to identity recognition remains incompletely understood. In particular, it remains unclear how external appearance changes, such as hairstyle and hair color, influence the recognition of familiar and unfamiliar faces across perceptual and memory-based processing stages. METHODS: This study examined the modulatory effects of external facial cues and face familiarity using behavioral measures and eye-tracking. Thirty-four native Chinese-speakin

Fine-scale dynamics of functional connectivity in the face-processing network during movie watching.

Mapping the human face-processing network is typically done during rest or using isolated, static face images, overlooking widespread cortical interactions obtained in response to naturalistic face dynamics and context. To determine how inter-subject functional correlation (ISFC) relates to face recognition scores, we measure cortical connectivity patterns in response to a dynamic movie in typical adults (N = 517). We find a positive correlation with recognition scores in edges connecting the occipital visual and anterior temporal regions and a negative correlation in edges connecting the atte

Distinct neural response to visual perspective and body size in the extrastriate body area.

Neuroimaging research has independently implicated the extrastriate body area (EBA) in distinguishing between different visual perspectives and morphologies of bodies within visual processing. However, the combined processing of these physical attributes towards neural EBA response remains unclear, and may be crucial in influencing higher-order, aesthetic evaluation of bodies. Indeed, EBA alterations amongst eating disorder patients have been associated with disturbances in body image, and disruption to EBA activity amongst healthy individuals has been shown to influence aesthetic evaluations

Separate processing of texture and form in the ventral stream: evidence from FMRI and visual agnosia.

Real-life visual object recognition requires the processing of more than just geometric (shape, size, and orientation) properties. Surface properties such as color and texture are equally important, particularly for providing information about the material properties of objects. Recent neuroimaging research suggests that geometric and surface properties are dealt with separately within the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) and the collateral sulcus (CoS), respectively. Here we compared objects that differed either in aspect ratio or in surface texture only, keeping all other visual properties con

Sensory-evoked gamma oscillations in chronic schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The early visual-evoked gamma oscillation (VGO) elicited by Gestalt stimuli is reduced in schizophrenia patients compared with healthy individuals, but it is unknown whether this effect is specific to these particular stimuli and task. In contrast, the early auditory-evoked gamma oscillation (AGO) was reported to be unaffected in a sample of unmedicated, mostly first-episode schizophrenics, but it is unknown whether this oscillation is abnormal in chronic, medicated patients. We investigated these issues by examining the VGO and AGO in chronic schizophrenic (SZ) and matched healthy

NGRID: A novel platform for detection and progress assessment of visual distortion caused by macular disorders.

This paper presents a new graphical macular interface system (GMIS) for accurate, rapid, and quantitative measurement of visual distortion (VD) in the central vision of patients suffering from macular disorders. In this system, a series of predefined graphical patterns or multiple grids (NGRID) are randomly selected from a library of patterns and visualized on the screen, then the VDs identified by the patient are recorded as binary codes using various control methods including speech recognition. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is used to generate the patterns and save them into a central libr

The Characteristics of Intelligence Profile and Eye Gaze in Facial Emotion Recognition in Mild and Moderate Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can easily be misdiagnosed, due to the nonspecific social and communicational deficits associated with the disorder. The present study attempted to profile the mental development and visual attention toward emotion among preschool children with mild or moderate ASD who were attending mainstream kindergartens. A total of 21 children (17 boys and 4 girls) diagnosed with mild or moderate ASD selected from 5,178 kindergarteners from the Xi'an city were recruited. Another group of 21 typically developing (TD) children who were matched with age, gender, and c

Eye Gaze and Perceptual Adaptation to Audiovisual Degraded Speech.

Purpose Visual cues from a speaker's face may benefit perceptual adaptation to degraded speech, but current evidence is limited. We aimed to replicate results from previous studies to establish the extent to which visual speech cues can lead to greater adaptation over time, extending existing results to a real-time adaptation paradigm (i.e., without a separate training period). A second aim was to investigate whether eye gaze patterns toward the speaker's mouth were related to better perception, hypothesizing that listeners who looked more at the speaker's mouth would show greater adaptation.

Object-related activity revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging in human occipital cortex.

The stages of integration leading from local feature analysis to object recognition were explored in human visual cortex by using the technique of functional magnetic resonance imaging. Here we report evidence for object-related activation. Such activation was located at the lateral-posterior aspect of the occipital lobe, just abutting the posterior aspect of the motion-sensitive area MT/V5, in a region termed the lateral occipital complex (LO). LO showed preferential activation to images of objects, compared to a wide range of texture patterns. This activation was not caused by a global diffe

Lexical decisions in adults with low and high susceptibility to pattern-related visual stress: a preliminary investigation.

Pattern-related visual stress (PRVS) is a form of sensory hypersensitivity that some people experience when viewing high contrast repeating patterns, notably alternating dark and light stripes. Those susceptible to PRVS typically have a strong aversion to such stimuli, and this is often accompanied by experiences of visual discomfort and disturbance. The patterns most likely to elicit symptoms of PRVS have a square-wave grating configuration of spatial frequency ~3 cycles/degree. Such stimuli are characteristic of printed text in which lines of words and the spaces between them present a high

Measurement of generalization fields for the recognition of biological motion.

The human visual system processes complex biological motion stimuli with high sensitivity and selectivity. The characterization of spatio-temporal generalization in the perception of biological motion is still a largely unresolved problem. We present an experiment that investigates how the visual system responds to motion stimuli that interpolate spatio-temporally between natural biological motion patterns. Inspired by analogous studies in stationary object recognition, we generated stimuli that interpolate between natural perceptual categories by morphing. Spatio-temporal morphs between natur

The endoscopic intrahepatic cholangiogram. Clinicopathologic correlation with postmortem cholangiograms.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) allows visualization of the entire biliary tree. The cholangiographic appearance of the intrahepatic bile ducts has received relatively little attention. This postmortem study was performed to define cholangiographic alterations produced by disease and to aid in the recognition of pathologic intrahepatic cholangiographic patterns produced by ERC. Intrahepatic cholangiographic patterns in the normal biliary tree, hepatic cirrhosis, hepatic infiltrative processes, and hepatic mass lesions are presented.

Iron deficiency in infancy and neurocognitive functioning at 19 years: evidence of long-term deficits in executive function and recognition memory.

Iron deficiency in infancy negatively impacts a variety of neurodevelopmental processes at the time of nutrient insufficiency, with persistent central nervous system alterations and deficits in behavioral functioning, despite iron therapy. In rodent models, early iron deficiency impairs the hippocampus and the dopamine system. We examined the possibility that young adults who had experienced chronic, severe, iron deficiency as infants would exhibit deficits on neurocognitive tests with documented frontostriatal (Trail Making Test, Intra-/Extra-dimensional Shift, Stockings of Cambridge, Spatial

Alzheimer's disease diagnosis on structural MR images using circular harmonic functions descriptors on hippocampus and posterior cingulate cortex.

Recently, several pattern recognition methods have been proposed to automatically discriminate between patients with and without Alzheimer's disease using different imaging modalities: sMRI, fMRI, PET and SPECT. Classical approaches in visual information retrieval have been successfully used for analysis of structural MRI brain images. In this paper, we use the visual indexing framework and pattern recognition analysis based on structural MRI data to discriminate three classes of subjects: normal controls (NC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The approach uses the

Double dissociation of memory capacities after bilateral occipital-lobe or medial temporal-lobe lesions.

Memory for recently encountered information can be reflected in conscious recall and recognition of that material, or in facilitated reprocessing of that material, an effect known as repetition priming. Repetition priming may be perceptual (form-based) or conceptual (meaning-based). A patient with bilateral occipital-lobe lesions (L.H.) and a patient with bilateral medial-temporal lobe lesions (H.M.) showed a double dissociation between visuoperceptual priming (impaired in L.H. and intact in H.M.) and visual recognition memory (intact in L.H. and impaired in H.M.). L.H. showed intact conceptua

Face and Word Recognition Can Be Selectively Affected by Brain Injury or Developmental Disorders.

Face and word recognition have traditionally been thought to rely on highly specialised and relatively independent cognitive processes. Some of the strongest evidence for this has come from patients with seemingly category-specific visual perceptual deficits such as pure prosopagnosia, a selective face recognition deficit, and pure alexia, a selective word recognition deficit. Together, the patterns of impaired reading with preserved face recognition and impaired face recognition with preserved reading constitute a double dissociation. The existence of these selective deficits has been questio

Mapping structural covariance networks of facial emotion recognition in early psychosis: A pilot study.

People with psychosis show deficits recognizing facial emotions and disrupted activation in the underlying neural circuitry. We evaluated associations between facial emotion recognition and cortical thickness using a correlation-based approach to map structural covariance networks across the brain. Fifteen people with an early psychosis provided magnetic resonance scans and completed the Penn Emotion Recognition and Differentiation tasks. Fifteen historical controls provided magnetic resonance scans. Cortical thickness was computed using CIVET and analyzed with linear models. Seed-based struct
