One of the important aspects of diagnosis in the mixed dentition is the determination of the tooth size-arch length relationship. Such a determination is often made before eruption of the permanent canines and first and second premolars. The most commonly used prediction method of Tanaka and Johnston is based on data from a sample of children of Northern European descent. The accuracy of this method when applied to a different ethnic population is questionable. In this study, 201 dental plaster casts of Asia-Pacific-American subjects, all of whom were under the age of 21 years, were used. The

BACKGROUND: Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD) is a rare inherited myopathy caused by mutations in the COL6 gene and is frequently associated with multisystem complications affecting the respiratory and skeletal systems, which may increase airway and anesthetic risks during dental treatment.
CASE REPORT: This report describes a 4-year-old girl with UCMD who presented with pain in the left lower molar. After a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation by the Department of Stomatology, Anesthesiology, and Pediatrics, the patient was classified as ASA III and underwent dental treatmen

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate external apical root resorption (EARR) in cases with extraction and non-extraction fixed orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: Ninety subjects were included in this study. The patients were divided into two groups: 43 with extraction treatment and 47 with non-extraction orthodontic treatment. EARR was measured using the crown-to-root ratio of the maxillary and mandibular incisors and canines on panoramic radiographs taken at the beginning (T0) and end of the treatment (T1). The Bonferroni corrected Z test was used for multiple comparisons.

PURPOSE: To better manage dental treatment outcome, a previsualization of desired appearances can be used to understand patients' wishes. A deeper comprehension of labial modifications related to hard-tissue movements is advantageous. The purpose of the study was to evaluate tooth restoration-induced labial displacements in three dimensions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a group of 20 healthy Caucasian individuals, simulations of vestibular translations of maxillary anterior crowns were obtained by placing an acrylic resin veneer on the labial surfaces of maxillary incisors and canines. Three-dim

Human eruption is a unique developmental process in the organism. The aetiology or the mechanism behind eruption has never been fully understood and the scientific literature in the field is extremely sparse. Human and animal tissues provide different possibilities for eruption analyses, briefly discussed in the introduction. Human studies, mainly clinical and radiological, have focused on normal eruption and gender differences. Why a tooth begins eruption and what enables it to move eruptively and later to end these eruptive movements is not known. Pathological eruption courses contribute to

The shape and size of tooth roots are genetically and phylogenetically predetermined. Clinical defects in root formation can manifest in the form of shortened roots caused by either root agenesis or root resorption. We report on a patient who came at age 7 years for space management. In the 2-year period after the initial visit, maxillary arch expansion was performed, followed by serial extractions of all 4 first premolars. A radiograph taken about 18 months after the serial extraction showed that although the crowns of all 4 second premolars had erupted fully into the arch, the roots were onl

The profession of orthodontics is projected to face a multitude of challenges. Do cyclic forces accelerate the rate of tooth movement and hence the speed of orthodontic treatment? Would bioengineered cementum and dentine be a solution to root resorption? What would orthodontics be like when bioengineered periodontal ligament and alveolar bone become clinical practice, or one day, entire teeth are bioengineered? Would it be possible to selectively differentiate stem cells into osteoblasts or osteoclasts by either static or cyclic forces? What is the new demand on orthodontic expertise with incr

Short-root anomaly (SRA), occurring mostly in maxillary incisors, is defined as developmentally very short, blunt dental roots. The condition has a genetic background and is related to hypodontia. Earlier population studies have been based on schoolchildren with developing dentitions and have indicated prevalence figures between 1% and 10%. We studied a random sample of existing panoramic radiographs of 2000 university students for SRA. Roots as long as or shorter than the crowns in the incisors and visually evaluated as very short, blunt roots bilaterally in the posterior teeth were classifie

Congenitally missing lateral incisors are a common clinical occurrence. Dental Implants have become a primary treatment option for replacement of these teeth. Many times in prosthodontic treatment planning a multidisciplinary approach is needed for a comprehensive out come. Prosthodontic treatment planning is needed prior to the patient's consultation and following treatment acceptance; the prosthodontist may need to coordinate treatment needs with other specialists, including an orthodontist and an implant surgeon. This article describes multidisciplinary management of a case presenting with

The case presented is that of a 5-year-old female with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. Dental findings were severe hypodontia, late dental development, taurodontism of the primary molars, microdontia, and spacing. Hypodontia has previously been reported and therefore this case adds to the evidence that hypodontia may be a common feature of this syndrome. It also suggests that other dental anomalies could occur in children with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.
