Delpazolid, an oxazolidinone, has been studied in non-clinical studies of efficacy and toxicity and Phase 1 clinical studies. Delpazolid has in vitro activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This study evaluated the bactericidal activity, safety, and pharmacokinetics of delpazolid in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Seventy-nine subjects, aged 19 to 75 years with newly diagnosed smear-positive TB with no prior treatment for the current episode and no confirmed resistance to rifampin or isoniazid, were randomized to receive delpazolid 800 mg once

BACKGROUND: Patients may unexpectedly deteriorate clinically and/or radiographically during the course of appropriate treatment for tuberculosis. These events have been extensively studied in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients; however, there are few data about immunocompetent children and adolescents.
METHODS: We studied all human immunodeficiency virus-negative patients treated for tuberculosis at our center between January 2002 and July 2009. Demographics, sites of disease at diagnosis and deterioration, and actions at the time of deterioration were reviewed. Cases were compare

The literature includes no studies on the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in the management of tuberculous spondylitis, and its role in the management of tuberculosis involving the thoracic spine remains unclear. The authors experience with 10 consecutive patients (six women, four men) who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis involving levels from T5 to T11, from January 1996 to December 1997, was analyzed. Using the extended manipulating channel method (2.5-3.5 cm portal incisions), video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was perform

OBJECTIVE: Surgery of pulmonary aspergillosis followed by higher incidence of post-operative complications. This was the purpose to evaluate our material.
METHODS: Between January 1983 and December 1995, the operation was carried out on a total of 84 patients for pulmonary aspergillosis. The patients were comprised of 71 males and 13 females, with a mean age of 49 years (range, 24-71). Previous lung disorders were observed in about half of the cases (most frequently tuberculosis), while in the other half aspergillosis was developed on the basis of (sub)-acute infections. Haemoptysis was prese

To assess the influence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV)-induced immunodeficiency on the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features of disseminated tuberculosis (TB), we studied 79 patients presenting in 1984 through 1987 with miliary or focal disseminated disease due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as well as 4 additional non-HIV patients diagnosed after 1987. Clinically defined acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or AIDS-related complex (ARC) was present in 51 (Group 1). A total of 20 had TB unrelated to HIV disease (Group 2). The remaining 12 were excluded because the

BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) poses a public health challenge, particularly among individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, many EPTB cases arise in those without HIV, leaving the underlying factors unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to characterize patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and EPTB, exploring the differences in associated factors for each type in patients with and without HIV.
DESIGN: An analytical observational study was conducted on a cohort of tuberculosis (TB) patients diagnosed between 2014 and 2021 in a referral hospital in Bogo

Congenital tuberculosis (TB) is difficult to detect because the disease presents few or no symptoms in the fetus during pregnancy and nonspecific symptoms in neonates. We reviewed 20 cases of congenital TB reported between 2011 and 2017 and report a case of a mother and her 8 days old neonate with congenital TB. In these 21 cases (including our case), the most common clinical presentations were respiratory distress, fever, and hepatosplenomegaly. The most common chest imaging findings were pneumonia, multiple pulmonary nodules, and miliary pattern. The mortality rate of infants with TB was inc

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in South Africa are co-infected with HIV, but the radiographic features of MDR-TB and their relationship with time to sputum culture conversion in the antiretroviral therapy era have not been described.
METHODS: We reviewed baseline chest radiographs for 56 patients with MDR-TB from a rural area of South Africa. We analyzed the association of cavities, consolidation, pleural effusion and hilar lymphadenopathy with time to sputum culture conversion, adjusting for HIV status, baseline sputum smear and CD4 count.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis control programs place an almost exclusive emphasis on adults with sputum smear-positive tuberculosis, because they are most infectious. However, children contribute a significant proportion of the global tuberculosis caseload and experience considerable tuberculosis-related morbidity and mortality, but few children in endemic areas have access to antituberculosis treatment. The diagnostic difficulty experienced in endemic areas with limited resources has been identified as a major factor contributing to poor treatment access. In general, there is a sense of scepticism

UNLABELLED: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder that classically involves the lungs and intrathoracic lymph nodes in a bilateral distribution. Unilateral disease is rare and may closely mimic malignancy, leading to diagnostic uncertainty. We report the case of a 71-year-old man with a history of coronary artery disease, prior tuberculosis exposure, and a 20-pack-year smoking history, who was found to have pleural-based, calcified pulmonary nodules on screening computed tomography (CT) scan. Initial positron emission tomography (PET) imaging demonstrated no avidity; however, fol

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality in South Africa. Pneumonia and opportunistic infections remain a major cause for hospital admission among those living with HIV, even in the era of the widespread availability of antiretroviral therapy.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the records of patients admitted with HIV and severe pneumonia, requiring high care/intensive care admission, during a period of 12 months (February 2018 to January 2019) were reviewed. Demographic details, antiretroviral use, HIV viral load, CD4 coun

BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) was the leading cause of infectious death worldwide until the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced case reporting and disrupted TB diagnosis and services. While Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, the disease burden within developed nations remains relatively rare. Although the many complications of TB are well known, no current data exists on those infected with TB who subsequently developed recurrent TB empyema, as it is such a rare complication, especially in pediatric and adolescent populations.
