A secretion was collected from the nipple and was examined. Hirsutism and abnormal pigmentation were lacking, and the aspect of the external genitalia was normal. The cromatin sex was male. The sella turcica had a normal roentgenologic aspect. The urinary 17-ketosteroid and oestrogen excretion was normal. The swelling was removed surgically. A histologic diagnosis of gynaecomasty was made. The differential diagnosis, classification and physiopathology of gynaecomasty are discussed.

A 37-year-old male with adrenocortical tumor presenting marked gynecomastia and impotence as initial symptoms was experienced. Abnormal elevations in urinary 17-KS, 17-OHCS and blood estrogen levels were noted. Total surgical removal of the tumor weighing 800g was performed. Postoperatively the gynecomastia disappeared and he regained libido with no signs of recurrence one year later.

The histology, estrogen (ER)- and androgen (AR)- receptor content, s-FSH, s-LH, s-17-beta-estradiol, U-17-ketosteroid and U-17-ketogenic steroid patterns were measured in a consecutive series of 20 patients operated on for gynecomasty. Two out of 22 specimens were ER-positive, and 4 out of 22 were AR-positive. No relationship was demonstrated between the histopathologic features, ie. active-intermediate-inactive gynecomasty, and the steroid receptor content in the present limited number of cases. Two patients with metastatic adrenal cortical carcinoma were treated with cisplatin and etoposide. Both achieved a partial remission after only one cycle. One patient had a "nonfunctioning" tumor that had previously regressed on mitotane whereas the second patient presented with classical Cushing's syndrome. Although the latter patient's urinary 17-ketosteroids normalized while receiving mitotane, the tumor itself failed to regress objectively. Cisplatin plus etoposide appears to be an active combination for the treatment of metastatic adrenal cortical carcinoma.

Elevated concentrations of peptide hormones have been described previously in human breast fluid. In the current study, the levels of cortisol, progesterone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androsterone, androsterone sulfate, dehydroisoandrosterone, dehydroisoandrosterone sulfate, estradiol, estrone, estradiol sulfate, and estrone sulfate were measured. The levels of the four 17-ketosteroids and the two estrogen sulfates were markedly elevated over the plasma level, while that of the other compounds was the same or only slightly higher than the plasma levels of the same compounds.

Different forms of aluminium (Al) are environmental xenobiotics that induce free radical-mediated cytotoxicity and reproductive toxicity. Propolis has been reported to be important antioxidant. Therefore, this study aimed at elucidating the protective effects of propolis against reproductive toxicity of aluminium chloride (AlCl3) in male rats. The first group served as control.
