Acquired B antigen and polyagglutination in a apparently healthy blood donor.

This work presents the second published report of an apparently healthy adult with an acquired B antigen. This case is unique because of the serial studies documenting the increase in strength of the B antigen, development of polyagglutinability, and absence of detectable gastrointestinal pathology. The cells of G.R., a 56-year-old caucasian female, came to our attention because of weak reactions with anti-B. Her cells were typed normal group A one year earlier. G.R.'s cells specifically absorbed an eluted anti-B. Her saliva contained A and H, but no B substance. The red cells were not polyagg

ABO compatibility and platelet transfusions of alloimmunized thrombocytopenic patients.

With data on 91 alloimmunized thrombocytopenic patients and 389 donor-recipient pairs matched or selectively mismatched for HLA antigens, it was observed that ABO incompatibility significantly reduced the effectiveness of platelet transfusions. The mean 24-hr recovery of platelets from histocompatible donors and from donors selectively mismatched for cross-reactive HLA antigens was decreased by approximately 23% if the donor typed for blood group A and/or B not found in the recipient. Thus, the reduction in platelet recovery associated with ABO incompatibility is not of a magnitude that would

[Anti-A/B Antibody Titers in Group O Healthy Donors in Hainan Province Area].

OBJECTIVE: To detect the IgM anti-A (B) and IgG anti-A (B) antibody titers of group O healthy donors in Hainan province area, to understand the distribution of O-type blood donor IgM and IgG antibody titers and to analyze the relationship between antibody titers, so as to provide experimental evidences for the safety and feasibility of urgent transfusion of uncrossmatched group O RBCs. METHODS: Group O whole blood sample was collected from 80 volunteers blood donors. IgM antibody titrations was performed using the immediate spin (IS) tube, and IgG antibody titration were performed using the c

Maternal-neonatal transfusion compatibility irrespective of ABO mismatch--a prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine transfusion compatibility of maternal RBCs for her neonate up to 4 weeks of age, irrespective of maternal-neonatal ABO mismatch. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study involving eligible mothers with their neonates delivered in participating site from 1 July 2012 till 31 December 2012. Mother's blood was collected before child birth. Neonatal blood sample was collected from placental end, shortly after birth. Blood Groups of mother-baby pair were individually tested for ABO and Rh-D groups. Pairs with negative Rh-D antigen/s or with same ABO blood groups w

[The problem of homologous blood in transfusiology and its solution].

In cardiosurgery conducted in this country and abroad the development of homologous blood syndrome was observed. Its frequency comprises up to 2.5%, according to the authors' data. It has been established that the syndrome is the result of isoimmunologic incompatibility by the antigenic systems of blood plasma allogeneic proteins. The authors have proposed the testing of blood compatibility by the agglutination methods according to the erythrocytic antigen systems with the use of the complement-fixation test according to the protein-plasma antigen systems, due to these tests the development of

Associations between ABO non-identical platelet transfusions and patient outcomes-A multicenter retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to platelet availability limitations, platelet units ABO mismatched to recipients are often transfused. However, since platelets express ABO antigens and are collected in plasma which may contain ABO isohemagglutinins, it remains controversial as to whether ABO non-identical platelet transfusions could potentially pose harm and/or have reduced efficacy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The large 4-year publicly available Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-III (REDS-III) database was used to investigate patient outcomes associated with ABO non-identical platelet transfu

Dilution is not the solution: acute hemolytic transfusion reaction after ABO-incompatible pooled platelet transfusion.

The short shelf life of platelets makes providing ABO-compatible platelets a challenge, and many institutions issue ABO-incompatible platelets when compatible units are not available. It is presumed that ABO antibodies that exist in donor plasma are diluted when platelets from multiple donors are combined to make a pooled product for transfusion. We present a case of a hemolytic transfusion reaction in a 73-year-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome who received an ABO-incompatible pooled platelet unit. This case report demonstrates that the dilution theory is not always true for pooled platel

[Recipients adverse reactions in the Ibn Sina Hospital of Rabat: State 1999-2013].

PURPOSE OF STUDY: The declaration of the recipients adverse reactions (RAR) is one of the field haemovigilance activities. It provides an evaluation of transfusion side effects and thus prevents their appearance. The aim of this study is to analyze, over 14 years, the RAR supports reported in Rabat Ibn Sina hospital. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All of the RAR supports sending to the blood transfusion service were analyzed. The data collected from these supports are: clinical characteristics of the patient, type of incident observed and type of labile blood products (LBP) transfused. RESULTS: A tot

Getting the right blood to the right patient: the contribution of near-miss event reporting and barrier analysis.

Safety and reliability in blood transfusion are not static, but are dynamic non-events. Since performance deviations continually occur in complex systems, their detection and correction must be accomplished over and over again. Non-conformance must be detected early enough to allow for recovery or mitigation. Near-miss events afford early detection of possible system weaknesses and provide an early chance at correction. National event reporting systems, both voluntary and involuntary, have begun to include near-miss reporting in their classification schemes, raising awareness for their detecti

An Accumulation Pretreatment-Free POCT Biochip for Visual and Sensitive ABO/Rh Blood Cell Typing.

Rapid blood type detection in point-of-care testing (POCT) scenarios is crucial for various clinical treatments. In this study, we present a sensitive, cost-effective, and straightforward biosensing approach for visual blood typing that notably simplifies the procedure by eliminating any need for blood sample pretreatment. Our technique achieves this by directly trapping and accumulating red blood cell (RBC) clusters within a photolithography-based microfluidic chip, thereby bypassing complex preprocessing. By employing an antigen-antibody assay involving isoagglutinins A, B, and/or D on the R

[Identification of a pregnant woman with tetragametic chimera of 46,XY/46,XX karyotype presenting as mixed agglutination during ABO blood group forward typing].

OBJECTIVE: To conduct blood group identification and genetic analysis on a pregnant woman suspected for having ABO blood group chimerism, and to explore the blood group identification methods and formation mechanisms of her chimerism. METHODS: A pregnant woman with mixed-field (MF) agglutination reactions in ABO forward typing detected at the Department of Transfusion, Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University on May 10, 2025 was selected as study subject. Blood grouping was carried out using a microcolumn gel method and saline method. The two populations of red blood cells (RBCs) from the proban
