The acoustic characteristics of Swedish vowels.

The Swedish vowel space is relatively densely populated with 21 categories that differ in quality and quantity. Existing descriptions of the entire space rest on recordings made in the late 1990s or earlier, while recent work in general has focused on subsets of the space. The present paper reports on static and dynamic acoustic analyses of the entire vowel space using a recently released database of h-VOWEL-d words (SwehVd). The results highlight the importance of static and dynamic spectral and temporal cues for Swedish vowel category distinction. The first two formants and vowel duration ar

Acoustic shock: an update review.

BACKGROUND: This paper discusses the concept of acoustic shock based on a literature review and the results of our own research into cases seen in both clinical and medicolegal practice. With the demise of traditional 'metal bashing' and 'smoke stack' heavy industries, there has been a decline in the incidence of noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus in this form of employment. However, with the increasing establishment of call centre work, the emergence of acoustic shock has been noted. Acoustic shock is recognised as a clinical entity distinct from noise-induced hearing loss and acoustic t

[Acoustic neuromas : Differential diagnoses].

CLINICAL ISSUE: Acoustic neuromas in adults are the most common infratentorial tumors that originate from the Schwann's cells of the vestibular part of the eighth cranial nerve and are clinically noticeable through neurological deficits, such as unilateral hypoacusis, tinnitus, dizziness and unilateral facial nerve palsy. Due to the widespread use of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), acoustic neuromas can now be diagnosed with a high rate of sensitivity and specificity; however, there are a number of possible differential diagnoses, such as meningioma, epidermoid a

Acoustic Characteristics in Epiglottic Cyst.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the acoustic characteristics associated with alternation deformation of the vocal tract due to large epiglottic cyst, and to confirm the relation between the anatomical change and resonant function of the vocal tract. METHODS: Eight men with epiglottic cyst were enrolled in this study. The jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonic ratio, and first two formants were analyzed in vowels /a:/, /e:/, /i:/, /o:/, and /u:/. These values were analyzed before and after laryngeal microsurgery. RESULTS: The F1 value of /a:/ was significantly raised after sur

Otologic manifestations of acoustic neuroma.

CONCLUSION: Many patients with acoustic neuroma (AN) experience hearing loss and tinnitus. Time from first symptoms to diagnosis can be considerable. AN should be suspected, and MRI scans performed, in patients with hearing loss accompanied by asymmetry, tinnitus, low speech discrimination score (SDS), and abnormal auditory brainstem response (ABR). OBJECTIVES: To determine the otorhinolaryngological factors associated with AN by analyzing the clinical manifestations and diagnostic test results of patients with AN before MRI scanning. METHODS: This study enrolled 114 patients definitively di

[Treatment of giant acoustic neuromas].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: To analyze the treatment modality and outcome of a series of patients with giant acoustic neuromas, a particular type of tumour characterised by their size (extracanalicular diameter of 4cm or more) and high morbidity and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective unicentre study of patients with acoustic neuromas treated in a period of 12 years. In our institutional series of 108 acoustic neuromas operated on during that period, we found 13 (12%) cases of giant acoustic neuromas. We reviewed the available data of these cases, including presentatio

Acoustic analysis of trill sounds.

In this paper, the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of steady apical trills--trill sounds produced by the periodic vibration of the apex of the tongue--are studied. Signal processing methods, namely, zero-frequency filtering and zero-time liftering of speech signals, are used to analyze the excitation source and the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract system, respectively. Although it is natural to expect the effect of trilling on the resonances of the vocal tract system, it is interesting to note that trilling influences the glottal source of excitation as well. The excitation chara

[Perceptual and acoustic evaluation of hoarseness].

Voice disturbances require a multidimensional diagnostics. Hoarseness as a common symptom of dysphonia contains the parameters of breathiness and roughness. Perceptual voice assessment is designed to describe voice attributes and serve as a standardised means of communication among clinicians. In Germany a commonly used and researched perceptual scale is the RBH-scale, providing a measure of roughness (R), breathiness (B) and the overall grade (H) of dysphonia as judged by the listener on a scale of 0 to 3 (0: normal, 1: mild, 2: moderate, 3: severe). Acoustic analysis of the voice by means of

Acoustical modeling of swallowing mechanism.

In this paper, a mathematical modeling of the swallowing sound generation is presented. To evaluate the model, its application on swallowing disorder (dysphagia) diagnosis is discussed. As a starting point, a simple linear time invariant model is assumed to represent the pharyngeal wall and tissue excited by a train of impulses. The modeling is approached by two different assumptions. In one approach, it is assumed that the impulse train, representing the neural activities to trigger swallow, is the same for both groups of control and dysphagic, and it is the pharyngeal model that accounts for

Malignant acoustic schwannoma in a dog.

A malignant schwannoma of the right acoustic nerve of a dog is described. The neoplasm was found during necropsy of a 12-year-old, spayed, female Labrador Retriever that experienced a sudden onset of severe pain in the neck and upon opening the mouth. Concurrent mild hind limb ataxia also was present. The tumor had infiltrative growth, and the spindle-shaped neoplastic cells were arranged in sheets and concentric whorls. Immunohistochemical staining of the neoplastic spindle cells was positive for S-100 antigen, neuron-specific enolase, and glial fibrillary acidic protein.

History of acoustic neurinoma surgery.

The purpose of this article is to provide insight into the development of surgery for acoustic neurinomas throughout the years. The significant contribution of surgical authorities such as Cushing, Dandy, and House are discussed. The advances in surgical techniques from the very first operations for acoustic tumors at the end of the 19th century until today are described, with special emphasis on the technological and diagnostic milestones that preceded each step of this development.
