Coping styles with stress and its relations to psychiatric and clinical symptoms in patients with sarcoidosis: A latent profile analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Although stress and styles of coping with it can have a major impact on one's health and can determine the course and management of chronic diseases, no previous studies have evaluated coping strategies and their relation to emotional distress and clinical symptoms in sarcoidosis. METHODS: In two consecutive studies, we investigated differences in coping styles of sarcoidosis patients in comparison to healthy control subjects and the association of identified profiles to an objective measurement of disease (Forced Vital Capacity) and symptoms such as dyspnoea, pain, anxiety and dep

Burden of hair loss: stress and the underestimated psychosocial impact of telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia.

Hair loss, as it occurs with telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia, provokes anxieties and distress more profound than its objective severity would appear to justify. This reflects the profound symbolic and psychosocial importance of hair. Stress has long been implicated as one of the causal factors involved in hair loss. Recently, in vivo studies in mice have substantiated the long-held popular belief that stress can exert profound hair growth-inhibitory catagen-inducing and hair-damaging pro-inflammatory effects. Insights into the negative impact of stress on hair growth and the integr

The evaluation of the 'stages of change' model for use in counselling client's undergoing predictive testing for Huntington's disease.

Nurses are increasingly working in new and novel situations which may be outside the realms of traditional nursing practice. Therefore when evaluating theories and models that may be utilized in these situations it may be necessary to look beyond established nursing theories and concepts. This paper therefore attempts to evaluate Prochaska & DiClemente's (1983) stages of change model for its goodness of fit when counselling people as part of the predictive testing programme for Huntington's disease. The model demonstrates that in order to provide effective communication it is important to reco

[Personality and coping with stress in patients suffering from functional dysphonia].

The examination covers the personality of 20 functional dysphonics, 14 individuals suffering from organic voice disorders and a group of 20 control persons when exposed to stress and its working up. In examining the group of functional dysphonics a significant positive self-assessment regarding their personality with a clear tendency to restraint has become clear. In comparison with the control persons an intensified anxiety state in situations causing stress is the result. Thus the influence of life events has been shown to have an important effect on the etiopathogenesis of functional dyspho

A comparison of three psychological testings of a transsexual.

This case illustrates the use of psychological testing in assessing change over a period of eight years. Evaluations were done six years before transsexual surgery, after surgery, and at the completion of psychotherapy. The initial tests were rife with morbid suicidal and pathological content. Psychotherapy in a residential setting was recommended and accepted. Psychological testing after surgery revealed identity conflicts, guilt, and underlying depression. The final evaluation revealed remarkable changes. Her ego was good. She was not handicapped by defenses. She was using her intelligence f

Not Too Young to Understand: Meaning Making From the Perspectives of School-Aged Children With Cancer-A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Meaning making is increasingly recognized as an important determinant of psychosocial adjustment in adult oncology. However, how school-aged children make meaning of cancer and how developmental, relational, and sociocultural influences shape this process remain insufficiently characterized, particularly because frameworks are largely derived from adult research and centered on intrapersonal processes. AIMS: To synthesize evidence on meaning making among school-aged children with cancer and examine these findings through Park's meaning-making model while identifying dimensions not

The Other Side of the ACEs Pyramid: A Healing Framework for Indigenous Communities.

For over two decades, extensive research has demonstrated significant associations between adverse childhood events (ACEs) and a wide range of negative health, mental health, and social outcomes. For Indigenous communities globally, colonization and historical trauma are commonly associated with ACEs, and these effects reverberate through generations. While the ACEs conceptual framework expanded pyramid is a useful model and a visual aid for understanding the historical and present-day dimensions of ACEs in Indigenous communities, a healing conceptual framework is needed to outline a path towa

Beyond the clinical context: the process of losing oneself living with Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: People with Huntington's disease (HD) have increased functional and cognitive dependence. While numerous clinical, genetic, and therapeutic management studies have been carried out, few studies have investigated the disease from the personal experience and the context of people living with HD. To better serve these patients, our purpose is to understand, from the perspective of the patient and their families, how people with HD cope with their daily lives outside the clinical setting. METHODS: Thirty-three affected or at-risk people participated in this study. Participants were in

False denials increase false memories for trauma-related discussions.

False denials are sometimes used to cope with traumatic experiences. We examined whether false denials can affect true and false memory production for a traumatic event and conversations surrounding the trauma. One hundred and twenty-six participants watched a trauma analogue video of a car crash before being randomly asked in a discussion with the experimenter to (1) respond honestly or (2) falsely deny that certain details happened in the video. After one week, all participants received misinformation about the discussion with the experimenter and the car crash. Finally, all participants wer

[When ideals put on the pressure].

In a society where positive parenting is becoming more and more important, both external and internal pressures on parents are not to be taken lightly. Educational ideals influence the way in which each of us will exercise our parenthood and can lead to risk factors for parental burn-out. Whether in a process of prevention or therapeutic intervention, avenues are envisaged to help parents cope.

Psychological factors in personal and clinical recovery in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research into bipolar disorder (BD) has primarily focused upon clinical recovery (CR), i.e. symptom reduction, and overlooked personally meaningful recovery outcomes emphasized by service users. Personal recovery (PR) has been a major focus in the formulation of mental health policies and guidelines, and yet, research into factors influencing PR in BD is in its infancy. METHODS: This study compared psychological associates of concurrent PR and CR, and determined psychological factors in PR prospectively at 6 months. RESULTS: 107 participants completed baseline assessments, of who

Fluid intelligence and psychosocial outcome: from logical problem solving to social adaptation.

BACKGROUND: While fluid intelligence has proved to be central to executive functioning, logical reasoning and other frontal functions, the role of this ability in psychosocial adaptation has not been well characterized. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A random-probabilistic sample of 2370 secondary school students completed measures of fluid intelligence (Raven's Progressive Matrices, RPM) and several measures of psychological adaptation: bullying (Delaware Bullying Questionnaire), domestic abuse of adolescents (Conflict Tactic Scale), drug intake (ONUDD), self-esteem (Rosenberg's Self Esteem

Network Analysis of Social Anxiety, Avoidant Behavior, and Spiritual Well-Being in Breast Cancer Patients: A Pathway to Targeted Psychosocial Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety and avoidance behaviors are prevalent among breast cancer patients, yet their interrelationships with protective factors such as spiritual well-being remain poorly understood. Network analysis offers a novel approach to identify central and bridge nodes that may serve as key targets for psychosocial intervention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 302 female breast cancer patients from a tertiary hospital in China. Participants completed the Social Anxiety Scale (SAS_1), Social Avoidance Scale (SAS_2), and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness T

The effects of childhood maltreatment on brain structure, function and connectivity.

Maltreatment-related childhood adversity is the leading preventable risk factor for mental illness and substance abuse. Although the association between maltreatment and psychopathology is compelling, there is a pressing need to understand how maltreatment increases the risk of psychiatric disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that maltreatment alters trajectories of brain development to affect sensory systems, network architecture and circuits involved in threat detection, emotional regulation and reward anticipation. This Review explores whether these alterations reflect toxic effects of ear

[The psychological aspects of patients with vascular disease].

From the onset of the illness through the course of treatment and on to recovery, a person being treated for a vascular condition may experience a range of emotions and reactions. The psychologist's role may address the psychological effects of the illness, as well as the impact of treatments and/or hospitalization on the patient's emotional, relational, and social life. Sometimes, an old issue resurfaces during treatment. In such cases, the goal is to identify the psychological factors at play to help the patient adapt throughout the course of care.
