Cognitive inflexibility and suicidal ideation among adolescents following hospitalization: The moderating role of life stress.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive inflexibility has recently been investigated as potential vulnerability factor for suicidal ideation (SI), but the context in which it may convey risk is unclear. Life stress has also been reliably associated with SI among adolescents, and following a stress-diathesis model, may be a factor that moderates the relationship between cognitive inflexibility and SI. METHODS: Psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents (N = 259) at high risk for future SI were followed for 18 months after discharge. Interviews assessing life stress and SI and a neurocognitive task assessing cogni

Meaning in Life Moderates Relations between Personality and Temperament and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Hospitalized Adolescents.

Previous research indicates that sensation seeking, emotion dysregulation, and impulsivity are predictive of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). A body of research supports that meaning in life predicts improved mental health and well-being, including fewer suicidal thoughts and attempts, yet no research has examined the moderating effects of meaning in life on the relations between personality and temperament and NSSI. Given the growing incidence rates of NSSI among adolescents and the potential lifelong consequences of NSSI, it is imperative to better understand the factors that reduce the rate

Disease Characteristics and Psychiatric Comorbidities in Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa Hospitalized During COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in new diagnoses and pediatric hospital admission for anorexia nervosa (AN) or atypical AN in adolescents have been reported, suggesting an adverse effect of COVID-19 on youth mental health. We hypothesized possible differences in prevalence of hospitalization and/or disease severity, related to socio-economic status and/or ethnicity. METHODS: Retrospectively, patients were divided into two subgroups and compared according to the date of first hospital admission: "pre SARS-COV2 era" group (n. 45, 8th March 2016-8th March 2020)

Acute infection as cause of hospitalization of asylum-seeking children and adolescents in Stockholm, Sweden 2015-2016.

We aimed to identify hospitalizations due to infectious diseases among asylum seekers and compare them to those of the resident population 1.6.2015-31.10.2016. Administrative numbers assigned to hospitalized non-resident children made them identifiable in the discharge register. The examined populations, expressed as person-years, were 334,573 residents and 7565 asylum seekers. There were 2500 episodes of infectious disease in 2240 resident children and 139 episodes in 121 asylum seekers. Among prevalent infections contracted before or during migration, there were 33 cases of tuberculosis, fou

The ability of low-magnitude mechanical signals to normalize bone turnover in adolescents hospitalized for anorexia nervosa.

UNLABELLED: We sought to determine whether low-magnitude mechanical stimulation (LMMS) normalizes bone turnover among adolescents hospitalized for anorexia nervosa (AN). Brief, daily LMMS prevents the decline in bone turnover typically seen during bed rest in AN. LMMS may have application for patients with AN in the inpatient setting to protect bone health. INTRODUCTION: Malnourished adolescents with AN requiring medical hospitalization are at high risk for rapid reduction in skeletal quality. Even short-term bed rest can suppress normal patterns of bone turnover. We sought to determine wheth
