Chronic intermittent hypoxia affects integration of sensory input by neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarii.

The autonomic nervous and respiratory systems, as well as their coupling, adapt over a wide range of conditions. Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is a model for recurrent apneas and induces alterations in breathing and increases in sympathetic nerve activity which may ultimately result in hypertension if left untreated. These alterations are believed to be due to increases in the carotid body chemoreflex pathway. Here we present evidence that the nucleus tractus solitarii (nTS), the central brainstem termination site of chemoreceptor afferents, expresses a form of synaptic plasticity that in

The female inferior hypogastric (= pelvic) plexus: anatomical and radiological description of the plexus and its afferences--applications to pelvic surgery.

AIM OF THE STUDY: We wanted to determine the anatomical features of the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP), and the useful landmarks for a safe surgical approach during pelvic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We dissected the IHP in 22 formolized female anatomical subjects, none of which bore any stigmata of subumbilical surgery. RESULTS: The inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) is a triangle with a posterior base and an anterior inferior top. It can be described as having three edges and three angles; its inferior edge stretches constantly from the fourth sacral root to the ureter's point of ent

Adenosine in the spinal cord and periphery: release and regulation of pain.

In the central nervous system (CNS), adenosine is an important neuromodulator and regulates neuronal and non-neuronal cellular function (e.g. microglia) by actions on extracellular adenosine A(1), A(2A), A(2B) and A(3) receptors. Extracellular levels of adenosine are regulated by synthesis, metabolism, release and uptake of adenosine. Adenosine also regulates pain transmission in the spinal cord and in the periphery, and a number of agents can alter the extracellular availability of adenosine and subsequently modulate pain transmission, particularly by activation of adenosine A(1) receptors. Organization of corneal afferent axons in the trigeminal nerve root entry zone in the cat.

Experiments were carried out in cats to learn the location of sensory axons from the cornea in the trigeminal nerve root just prior to its entry into the brainstem. HRP injected into the cornea labelled these axons and indicated they were not restricted to the ophthalmic division of the nerve root as had been indicated from previous studies. These findings, if representative of other branches of this nerve, offer a partial explanation for the variable preservation of function following transection of an entire division of the trigeminal nerve root in cases of trigeminal neuralgia.

On the origin of presynaptic depolarization of group I muscle afferents in Clarke's column in the cat.

The origin of presynaptic depolarization of group I afferents in Clarke's column has been re-investigated, using changes in excitability of single fibres as a measure of their depolarization. In contrast to the previously reported lack of effects following conditioning stimulation of group Ia afferents, these afferents have been found to increase the excitability of other group Ia afferent terminals in Clarke's column. Flexor Ia and Ib afferents were found to be more effective than extensor afferents. The group I origin of the presynaptic depolarization of group I afferents in Clarke's column

An autoradiographic study of the development of the entorhinal and commissural afferents to the dentate gyrus of the rat.

The development of the entorhinal, ipsilateral associational, and commissural afferents to the dentate gyrus have been studied autoradiographically, following the injection of small amounts of tritiated proline into the medial and lateral parts of the entorhinal cortex, and into fields CA3c and CA4 of the hippocampus, in a series of rats, on the third, sixth, and twelfth postnatal days. Clear labeling of the entorhinal afferents were found at the third postnatal day, and from the earliest stage studied the afferents from the two parts of the entorhinal cortex appear to be spatially segregated

Functional identification of vagal afferent branch from the gastrointestinal organs by capsaicin administration in mice.

The vagal nerves in mice run ventrally and dorsally below their diaphragm. They form four branches (common hepatic, R1; ventral gastric, R2; dorsal gastric, L1; celiac, L2) that project into the abdominal organs, such as the stomach, small intestine, and liver. To identify the vagal afferents that receive inputs from these organs, we examined the neural responses to the gastrointestinal and portal injection of capsaicin, a known stimulant of vagal afferents. The afferent fibers of the three branches (R1, R2, and L1) were activated following the intragastric (IG) injection of capsaicin in anest

Spinal Afferent Innervation From Left Dorsal Root Ganglia in the Flat-Mounts of Whole Atria of Rats: Anterograde Tracing.

The spinal afferent innervation of the heart helps to regulate cardiac functions by sending sensory information through the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) to the brain. However, the distribution and morphology of spinal afferents in the heart are not well characterized due to tracer selections, the surgical access to upper thoracic DRGs, and the thickness of the heart tissues. In this study, we injected tracer dextran biotin (DB) into the left DRGs (C8-T3) of male Sprague-Dawley rats (3-5 months). After 16 days, flat-mounts of the whole left and right atria were prepared and diaminobenzidine staine

Central projections of the ethmoidal nerve of the cat as determined by the horseradish peroxidase tracer technique.

The ethmoidal nerve innervates the nasal mucosa and constitutes the afferent limb of several upper airway protective reflexes. Protective reflexes, such as sneezing, coughing, and apnea, are those reflexes that either expel foreign substances from the respiratory tract or stop them from gaining access to the lungs. The afferents for nasal receptors are thought to be a part of the trigeminal system rather than olfactory in nature. The objective of this study was to localize the cell bodies of these ethmoidal afferents and to trace the central projections of these neurons. Horseradish peroxidase

Integrated signalling networks in the healthy lower urinary tract: A narrative review.

Lower urinary tract (LUT) function in health, is summarised in urine storage and voluntary voiding. They are mediated through finely coordinated structural signalling mechanisms. The histological structure of the bladder not only preserves a barrier function but also dynamically senses mechanical and chemical stimuli. Urothelial mechano-transduction comprises stretch-activated channels (ENaC, Piezo1/2, TRPV4) and neurotransmitters such as ATP, nitric oxide and acetylcholine to modulate adjacent afferent nerves. Cholinergic signalling through M3 predominantly muscarinic and nicotinic receptors

Regional Targeting of Bladder and Urethra Afferents in the Lumbosacral Spinal Cord of Male and Female Rats: A Multiscale Analysis.

Sensorimotor circuits of the lumbosacral spinal cord are required for lower urinary tract (LUT) regulation as well as being engaged in pelvic pain states. To date, no molecular markers have been identified to enable specific visualization of LUT afferents, which are embedded within spinal cord segments that also subserve somatic functions. Moreover, previous studies have not fully investigated the patterning within or across spinal segments, compared afferent innervation of the bladder and urethra, or explored possible structural sex differences in these pathways. We have addressed these quest

The serotonin(5-HT)2A receptor is involved in the hypersensitivity of bladder afferent neurons in cyclophosphamide-induced cystitis.

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic bladder inflammation characterized by the main symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, and pelvic pain. The hypersensitivity of bladder afferent neurons is considered a significant pathophysiologic mechanism in IC/PBS. Serotonin (5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptamine) receptors are known to be involved in the regulation of the micturition reflex and hyperalgesia, but the effect of 5-HT receptors on cystitis remains unknown. In this study, a rat model of interstitial cystitis induced by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (CYP) was

Researching bladder afferents-determining the effects of β(3) -adrenergic receptor agonists and botulinum toxin type-A.

A substantial portion of the current research on lower urinary tract dysfunction is focused on afferent mechanisms. The main goals are to define and modulate the signaling pathways by which afferent information is generated, enhanced and conveyed to the central nervous system. Alterations in bladder afferent mechanisms are a potential source of voiding dysfunction and an emerging source for drug targets. Established drug therapies such as muscarinic receptor antagonists, and two emerging therapies, β(3) -adrenergic receptor agonists and botulinum toxin type-A, may act partly through afferent m

Widespread neural excitation initiated from cardiac spinal afferent nerves.

Reflex effects of cardiac sympathetic afferent nerve excitation on cardiac and renal components of sympathetic outflow have been well investigated, but the extent of these cardiac afferent influences on other sympathetic nerves or on respiratory or cortical neural systems is unknown. Therefore such influences were investigated electrophysiologically in anesthetized, vagotomized, baroreceptor-denervated cats. Stimulation of cardiac sympathetic spinal afferent neurons by the noxious substance bradykinin caused excitation of cardiac, renal, splenic, gastrohepatic, adrenal, and deep peroneal (musc

[Mechanisms of dyspnea].

Dyspnea has many possible causes and, like pain, is felt in different qualities. Afferent signals originate from the chemoreceptors (pH, O2 and CO2) as well as from mechanoreceptors in the lungs, respiratory muscles and thorax. Complexity arises from the fact that both blood gases and the acid-base balance have to be regulated. There is almost always a combination of afferent incoming signals, which can reinforce each other but also determine the quality of the dyspnea experienced. In humans, O2 is mainly measured peripherally, whereas CO2 and pH are measured centrally. The areas of the brain

Gut-brain communication: Functional anatomy of vagal afferents.

There is increasing interest in interoceptive mechanisms as a key player in mental health. The vagus nerve is an important pathway of communication between the body and the brain, and recent advances in neurobiological techniques have enabled the identification of function-specific populations of vagal sensory neurons. Here we briefly review this progress, focusing on vagal innervation of the gut and its involvement in ingestive behavior, metabolic regulation, and immune defense. While we have learned much about the organization of the peripheral interface of the sensory vagal system, dissemin

Neuroanatomy of the brachial plexus: the missing link in the continuity between the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The brachial plexus is a complex network of nerves which extends from the neck to the axilla and which supplies motor, sensory, and sympathetic fibers to the upper extremity. Generally it is formed by the union of the ventral primary rami of the spinal nerves, C5-C8 and T1, the so-called "roots" of the brachial plexus. The goal here is to examine the neural architecture of the brachial plexus. The most constant arrangement of nerve fibers will be delineated, and then the predominant variations in neural architecture will be defined, particularly the prefixed and postfixed plexus, as well as th

Neuronal architecture of the mosquito deutocerebrum.

Mosquito behavior is heavily dependent on olfactory and mechanosensory cues, which are detected by receptor neurons on the antenna and on the palps. Recent progress in mosquito sensory genomics highlights the need for an up-to-date understanding of the neural architecture of the mosquito brain. Here we present a detailed description of the neural structure of the primary target of the majority of these neurons, the deutocerebrum, in the African malaria (Anopheles gambiae) and yellow fever (Aedes aegypti) mosquitoes. Special focus is made on the olfactory system, the antennal lobe (AL), where w
