The pollution of air is one of the most pressing public service problems resulting from the process of urbanization, industrialization and traffic expansion. Air quality control is carried out continually with the aim of assessing the situation and proposing prophylaxis measures. Our investigations focussed on air sediment, soot and sulphur dioxide. With regard to engine exhaust gases, the paper presents the concentration data for carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and lead. The safety of air travel for persons with intraocular gas after ocular surgery has been in question since the mid 1970s, when the use of intraocular gases after vitrectomy became widespread. After vitrectomy, air-fluid exchange was performed on six Rhesus monkeys. During simulated air travel in an altitude chamber, intraocular pressure rose an average of 42 mmHg with intraocular air volumes as small as 0.25 cc. Air pollutants can exhibit both acute and chronic effects. Acute effects mainly occur during smog situations in industrial areas when atmospheric concentrations of hazardous substances are extremely high. The concentrations of eight air contaminants suspected of causing acute and chronic health problems for firefighters were measured in over 200 fires in the City of Boston using a personal air sampler. Threatening concentrations of both carbon monoxide and acrolein were found in a small proportion of the fires. Less hazardous levels of hydrogen chloride, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide were also noted. To resolve the apparent contradiction between Norn's work on human eyes suggesting that postoperative air protects the corneal endothelium and the work of Leibowitz on excised animal eyes suggesting that air damages the corneal endothelium, we have replicated Norn's findings in an animal model similar to that used by Leibowitz. Since fewer metabolically active cells may maintain corneal deturgesence even after cell loss we do not believe that Norn's work contradicts that of Leibowitz. We find that the eyes treated with air have significantly less corneal swelling.

We related year-round air pollutant concentration in three small U.S. towns, with considerable differences in population density and industrial activity, to air temperature, wind direction, wind speed, rainfall, sky conditions, and days of the week (workdays vs. pended particulates) concentrations can be explained by changes in weather conditions. Airborne smallpox virus has been recovered in an isolation hospital using an adhesive surface sampling technique in the presence of very low aerosol concentrations. Previous work in this field is reviewed. Successful recovery of airborne virus depends on sampling large volumes of air with a suitable sampler and thorough investigation of the whole sample taken for the presence of viable virus. More information on the characteristics and behaviour of airborne smallpox virus is needed in particular with regard to the future design and siting of smallpox isolation units.
