This work pertains to the study of exposure to air pollution and noise, of any citizen, in any time of day, within the perimeter of the Polyclinic of Bari. We utilized "dynamic" samplings, in a period of 24 hours, along a walking trail that lasted about 70 minutes, divided on the roads inside the general hospital, performed by voluntary people carrying, by shoulder, a bag containing necessary tools, with their sample heads placed externally in the respiratory area. The values of the environmental survey revealed, particularly, the presence of atmospheric concentrations of PM10 of 63,4 microg/m…

The authors performed a time-series analysis to test the association between air pollution and daily numbers of hospitalizations for headache in 7 Chilean urban centers during the period 2001-2005. Results were adjusted for day of the week and humidex. Three categories of headache-migraine, headache with cause specified, and headache not otherwise specified-were all associated with air pollution. Relative risks for migraine associated with interquartile-range increases in specific air pollutants were as follows: 1.11 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06, 1.17) for a 1.15-ppm increase in carbon …

Dependence of air pollutants on meteorology is presented with the aim of understanding the governing processes pollutants phase interaction. Intensive measurements of particulate matter (PM10) and gaseous materials (e.g., CO, NO2, SO2, and O3) are carried out regularly in 2002 at 14 measurement sites distributed over the whole territory of Great Cairo by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency to assess the characteristics of air pollutants. The discussions in this work are based upon measurements performed at Abbassiya site as a case study. The nature of the contributing sources has been in

The effects of exposure to air pollution (defined by levels of SO2) were studied in a representative sample of over 3,500 households in the greater Haifa area. The sample was drawn from 16 high and low pollution neighborhoods which also represented different socioeconomic strata. A very significant relationship was found between levels of pollution in residential and work areas and self-reported respiratory symptoms and diseases. This finding was strongly supported by a statistically significant relationship between actual measured levels of pollution in the 2 weeks prior to the interview and …

Human controlled and observational studies both lead to the conclusion of air pollution adversely affecting athletic performance during training and competition. The dosage of various air pollutants during exercise is much higher due to the marked increase in ventilatory rate and concomitant nasal and oral breathing. This is particularly true for sulfur dioxide which is a highly water-soluble gas and is normally absorbed in the upper airway during nasal breathing. With heavy exercise, oral pharyngeal breathing is the predominant mode of breathing and much larger amounts of sulfur dioxide are d…

BACKGROUND: Fetal development is a crucial window of susceptibility in which exposure-related alterations can be induced on the molecular level, leading to potential changes in metabolism and development. The placenta serves as a gatekeeper between mother and fetus, and is in contact with environmental stressors throughout pregnancy. This makes the placenta as a temporary organ an informative non-invasive matrix suitable to investigate omics-related aberrations in association with in utero exposures such as ambient air pollution.
OBJECTIVES: To summarize and discuss the current evidence and d…

Since the 2000s, air pollution has generally continued to decrease in the U.S. To investigate preterm birth (PTB) risk associated with air pollutants in two consecutive pregnancies, we estimated exposures using modified Community Multiscale Air Quality models linked to the NICHD Consecutive Pregnancy Study. Electronic medical records for delivery admissions were available for 50,005 women with singleton births in 20 Utah-based hospitals between 2002-2010. We categorized whole pregnancy average exposures as high (>75th percentile), moderate (25-75) and low (<25). Modified Poisson regression est…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Environmental exposures have become increasingly recognized as contributors to both the development and severity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). While this relationship is well established in lower airway diseases, the role of air pollution - specifically, particulate matter (PM) - in upper airway disease, namely CRS, has only been demonstrated more recently. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent studies on the link between air pollution and chronic rhinosinusitis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) has a significant n…

Air pollution is an important environmental risk factor and, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study, a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality. Hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, has been increasingly associated with exposure to various air pollutants. This review aims to highlight key mechanistic and epidemiological findings underlying the relationship between air pollution and hypertension. On a mechanistic level, air pollution contributes to oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and activation of the sympathetic …

Exposure to ambient air pollution is ubiquitous and unavoidable. While associations between air pollution and cardiometabolic diseases are well-established, its role in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), has only recently begun to emerge. This narrative review provides an overview of current findings and discusses challenges and opportunities for future epidemiologic research. Mechanistically, air pollution may contribute to ADRD and PD through neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and cerebrovascular damage. Long-t…

INTRODUCTION: The increasing availability of data from electronic health records in healthcare organizations and systems has made it feasible to assess the relationship between various environmental parameters (e.g., pollution levels, meteorological data), hospital admissions, morbidity, and mortality associated with lung diseases. This study aimed to assess the correlation between air pollution levels and respiratory function parameters in patients with chronic obstructive lung diseases residing in various regions of the Attica Basin, Greece.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Air pollution measurements…
