Organ donation in Latin America.

Recently in Latin America, there has been a strong influence of the "Spanish model" of organ procurement. In 2001, The "Punta Cana Group" was created by Latin American transplantation coordinators with the objective of registering and improving the system of donation and procurement. In many countries there is no universal financial support from the government for medical treatment, including dialysis and transplantation. In other countries there is complete financial support for all of the population, including immunosuppressive drugs. Practically all countries have transplantation laws that

Newborn screening in North America.

Newborn screening in North America dates to the early work of Bob Guthrie in the USA. Screening programmes in both the USA and Canada began in the early 1960s, with documented programmes in both countries as early as 1962. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, many of the screening tests that later became part of routine screening around the world were developed in US and Canadian laboratories, including tests for phenylketonuria, other inborn errors of metabolism, congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and haemoglobinopathies. An automated punching machine developed in the USA f

Age at menopause in Latin America.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the age at menopause (AM) in Latin America urban areas. DESIGN: A total of 17,150 healthy women, aged 40 to 59 years, accompanying patients to healthcare centers in 47 cities of 15 Latin American countries, were surveyed regarding their age, educational level, healthcare coverage, history of gynecological surgery, smoking habit, presence of menses, and the use of contraception or hormone therapy at menopause. The AM was calculated using logit analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of the entire sample was 49.4 +/- 5.5 years. Mean educational level was 9.9 +/- 4.5 years, and the

Anthrax in America 2001-2003.

Anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis in humans is rare. Two recent outbreaks that were intentionally caused occurred among postal employees, politicians, and journalists in the United States. This has caused tremendous fear, and our experience with these "anthrax incidents" has changed our views on the natural history of this disease in people. In this paper, we review the lifecycle and biology of this micro-organism. Anthrax that occurs from a weaponized form of this micro-organism has a specific clinical presentation that requires a suspicion of anthrax exposure to be diagnosed. New methods

[Eltor cholera in Latin America].

Cholera epidemics in South and Central America in the period 1991-1999 are characterized. The mechanisms of existence of Vibrio eltor in environmental objects have been substantiated. The causes and conditions of endemic foci formation which determine the infection spread not only within the countries of the subcontinent, but also far beyond its borders are shown. The effectiveness of cholera control interventions is evaluated.

Organ transplantation in Latin America.

Organ transplantation is currently a form of treatment for end-stage organ disease in Latin America for which enthusiasm appears to be growing both in individual countries as well as in the whole region. The Latin-American Transplant Registry has been a factor in the development of communication among the different countries of the region and a focus for unification. Both renal and extra-renal organ transplantation have increased significantly during 1999 and for kidneys the activity is currently 12% of the world renal transplant statistics. Important evidence for the continuing development an

A history of psychiatric consultation in America.

Consultation-liaison psychiatry emerged in a particular socio-historical context, following a major shift of medicine into a more scientific, hospital-based system. Psychiatrists realized that they needed to move outside of the asylum and reintegrate themselves with the new structures of medicine, especially the general hospital and the medical school. Psychosomatic theory and psychoanalytic influence shaped the emergence of consultation-liaison activities in the 1930s through 1950s as they shaped most psychiatric services in the United States at that time, but they were an epiphenomenon to th

Inactivity, diet, and the fattening of America.

Recent studies have documented an increasing prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity in the United States. These increases will likely result in increased adult obesity because of the tracking of fatness from adolescence into adulthood and the tendency for adults in the United States to become obese as they age. We have identified television viewing as a strong risk factor for childhood and adolescent obesity. Television viewing is associated with both the onset of obesity and a decrease in the remission of obesity and acts by decreasing activity levels and possibly influencing diet. Lo

Histoplasmosis in Belize, Central America.

After two small outbreaks of histoplasmosis in Belize, an epidemiologic survey was carried out. Forty percent of 141 persons in two groups tested demonstrated a positive histoplasmin reaction. In one study group there was a significant association between visiting caves and histoplasmin positivity. Histoplasma capsulatum was not isolated in 20 soil specimens collected from outbreak-associated caves, but was isolated from 1 of 26 bats collected from the same caves. The presence of histoplasmosis in Belize, C.A. is documented, and this disease should be considered in differential diagnosis in pa

Babesiosis and Theileriosis in North America.

Babesia and Theileria are apicomplexan parasites that cause established and emerging diseases in humans, domestic and wild animals. These protozoans are transmitted by Ixodid ticks causing babesiosis or theileriosis, both characterized by fever, hemolytic anemia, jaundice, and splenomegaly. In North America (NA), the most common species affecting humans is B. microti, which is distributed in the Northeastern and Upper Midwestern United States (US), where the tick vector Ixodes scapularis is established. In livestock, B. bovis and B. bigemina are the most important pathogens causing bovine babe
