BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis is a significant health problem in hairdressers. The number of occupational skin diseases in this group constantly increases. The most frequent factors contributing to the skin damage include water, shampoos, detergents, conditioners, hair dyes, bleaches, permanent wave solutions, and components of gloves.

The present study examined the requirement of Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC-18748 for iron. Nutrient broth depleted of iron by the chelating cation exchange resin Chelex-100 did not support the growth of T. mentagrophytes beyond germ tube formation. Ophthalmic solutions should be prepared and preserved according to whether they are to be used in surgical procedures, in the clinic or office, or by the patient at home. There is an optimum pH level at which the solutions of individual drugs should be buffered in order to obtain the maximum efficiency and stability. Deterioration of the drugs used is greatly diminished when they are dispensed at the proper pH. Quaternary ammonium chloride solutions in proper strength have been shown to be adequate for the preservation of ophthalmic solutions.

It was shown possible to use nutrient media containing only salt components and agar-agar for determination of biological activity of tetracyclines (tetracycline, morphocycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline), erythromycin and oleandomycin. A uniform nutrient medium containing ammonium chloride, trisubstituted sodium citrate, disubstituted sodium phosphate and agar-agar was developed. Glucose is added to this medium simultaneously with the test microbe, B. subtilis ATCC 6633. The medium of the above composition provided readily reproducible results.

There have been no published reports of stannosis in tinners. In this paper its occurrence in hearth tinners is described. In hearth tinning molten tin is poured into heated iron hollow-ware and smoothed over the internal surface with a cork bat. Ammonium chloride powder is used as a flux. It is considered that fumes arising in the process from the reaction of the flux and the tin caused a concentration of tin compounds in the atmosphere, and this was the mechanism by which stannosis was produced. The literature on stannosis and tinning is reviewed.

This paper describes the development of a method for recovery of phosphorous from one of the waste waters at an Akzo Nobel chemical plant in Ale close to Göteborg. It was found that it is possible to transform the phosphorous in the waste water to a saleable product, i.e. a slowly dissolving fertilizer. Pseudomonas aeruginosa grows readily on synthetic media containing succinate (36 mM) and ammonium chloride as sole source of nitrogen (34 mM) ; addition of tyrosine or phenylalanine (2,7 mM) is followed by an increase of both the growth rate and pyocyanine production. Several molecules structurally related to tyrosine give similar results. Tyrosine partially suppresses the inhibitory effect of both cyanide and azide. Metabolic acidosis was produced in two patients with hypokalemic periodic paralysis by the administration of ammonium chloride over a period of three days. The challenging test of glucose and insulin produced a substantially smaller reduction of both serum potassium concentration and muscle strength than when the patients were tested in normal acid-base balance. The findings agree with earlier work on acetazolamide, suggesting that metabolic acidosis provides protection against episodes of muscle weakness in periodic paralysis.
