19 patients with episodes of transient global amnesia (TGA) were studied, with special reference to the laboratory and instrumental findings (mainly EEG and CT scan). A high proportion of subjects had several risk factors for cerebrovascular disease or CT abnormalities.

In 9 patients, aged 11 to 28 years, minor head injury triggered an amnesic attack grossly disproportionate to the degree of trauma. During these attacks, patients were unable to form new memories for 2 to 24 hours, had extensive retrograde amnesia, voiced repetitive queries and were disorientated for time, but were otherwise intact neurologically. We suggest that these episodes were attacks of transient global amnesia triggered by the mild blows to the head. We also suggest that they constitute a previously unrecognized variety of traumatic migraine.

Transient global amnesia is a not uncommon presentation of acutely altered neuropsychiatric status. It is, however, a clinical diagnosis that requires a careful history with attention to inciting events, risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, the absence of other abnormalities on neurological examination, and normal results of laboratory studies. Knowledge of the generally benign course of TGA can facilitate the care and psychological support of these patients and their families.

In a patient with transient global amnesia, computed tomography demonstrated a left temporal haemorrhage sparing the hippocampal region.

A 64-year-old woman suddenly had an attack of confusion and amnesia that suggested transient global amnesia. However, her loss of memory for recent events lasted more than ten days and was accompanied by psychomotor agitation and transient alteration of sexual behavior. The patient had no other neurologic signs during the episode. She recovered completely from the recent memory deficit, but was left with a persistent retrograde amnesia for a period of five to ten years and total amnesia for the acute episode. The EEG was suggestive of a left medial temporal lobe lesion.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an uncommon neurologic disorder that consists of a sudden and temporary loss of memory, both present and past. Its causes and risk factors are not well known. We describe a case of a 58-year-old woman who was brought to the emergency department (ED) with sudden onset loss of memory and disorientation after a dive in the ocean. She presented memory deficits with incapacity to retain new memories and amnesia for the previous 24 hours. All exams ordered were normal, including computed tomography of the brain and laboratory analysis. After six hours of close monit

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome characterized by a loss of anterograde memory with a less prominent loss in retrograde episodic memory that resolves within 24 hours or less. In this report, we present a rare case of a 62-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with sudden onset confusion and memory loss. Prior to this, the patient had no significant medical or psychiatric history. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) showed a normal presentation, and a neurology consultation ruled out any organic brain abnormalities. After ruling out al

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a stereotypic condition characterized by anterograde and retrograde amnesia that typically resolves within 24 hours. The pathophysiology of TGA is still unclear. We noted that patients hospitalized with TGA tend to appear in seasonal clusters, and decided to investigate this phenomenon.
METHODS: Every patient with acute presentation of amnesia at our medical center is hospitalized for observation and evaluation. We reviewed the monthly occurrence of TGA in our patient population between 2000 and 2014, and compared this to non-TGA hospi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Whether transient global amnesia (TGA) represents an arterial insult that heralds ischemic stroke remains unclear. Therefore, we examined stroke risk after TGA in a population-based cohort.
METHODS: After performing chart review at our institution to validate the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification diagnosis code for TGA, we used administrative claims data to identify all patients discharged from nonfederal California emergency departments or acute care hospitals between 2005 and 2010 with a primary discharge diagnosis of TGA. INTRODUCTION: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterised by impairment of anterograde memory and, to a certain extent, retrograde memory, which is associated with mild temporal and spatial disorientation that is completely re-established after a few hours. There are different hypotheses about its pathogenesis, including theories about a possible epileptic, migrainous or ischaemic foundation or its being due to venous congestion in the hippocampuses, although the cause remains unknown. In the same way, many precipitating factors have been related to this disorder, including pain, anxiety,

The risk of recurrency in transient global amnesia was calculated from eight representative studies published in the literature comprising a total of 622 patients, and from a personal survey in 122 patients to be 3.4%/year. Within a mean period of observation of five years, a first recurrency was followed by one further amnesic attack in 1/5 and by two or more attacks in 1/10. Stroke risk proved not to be higher than in a normal population of the respective age groups. A residual syndrome of disturbed long term verbal memory may be seen even after a single attack.
