The brainstem reticular formation has been studied in 16 genera representing 11 families of reptiles. Measurements of Nissl-stained reticular neurons revealed that they are distributed along a continuum, ranging in length from 10 micrometer to 95 micrometer. Reticular neurons in crocodilians and snakes tend to be larger than those found in lizards and turtles. Golgi studies revealed that reticular neurons possess long, rectilinear, sparsely branching dendrites. Small reticular neurons (less than 31 micrometers length) possess fusiform or triangular somata which bear two or three primary dendri

Hippos are considered the closest living relatives to cetaceans and they have some similar adaptations for aquatic living, such as a modified respiratory tract. Behavioral observations of male and female common hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) at Disney's Animal Kingdom® and the Adventure Aquarium were conducted to describe and examine movements of the nostrils during respiration (inspiration, expiration, and inter-breath interval). The hippo nostril is a crescent shaped opening with lateral and medial aspects that are mobile and can be adducted and abducted to regulate the nostril opening. Not

Biological shape data combine two sorts of information: genometric location and biological homology. The link between these two is the landmark, a set of biologically corresponding points located in all the forms of a series. Analysis of shapes as configurations of landmarks proceeds most effectively by D' Arcy Thompson's (1917, 1942) method of transformations. In this tradition, shape change is not the arithmetical difference of distances, angles, and ratios measured on shapes separately; rather, it is a mensurand in its own right, the geometrical deformation taking the Cartesian coordinate s

In the anatomy of the lymphatic bed of the small intestine muscle layer still there are obscure questions on the phylo- and ontogenesis of man and animals. Under study were 92 corpses (35 men, 27 cats and 30 dogs) of different age, beginning from the intrauterine period to old age. Different methods were used: polychromatic injection; macro- and microscopic dissection; staining after van Gieson and with haematoxilineeosin; impregnation with 0,25-1% solution of silver nitrate; dehydration and clearing; counting of the density of loops per a mm2 and the depth of their disposition in the intestin

BACKGROUND: Normative values of sagittal alignment are used as references for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal pathologies. There are currently no reference values for the normative sagittal alignment of Lebanese subjects. The objective is to describe normative values of full body sagittal alignment parameters in asymptomatic Lebanese adults and to compare the sagittal alignment of this population to that of populations of various origins.
METHODS: Included subjects were aged 18 to 28 years old. Each subject underwent a full body biplanar X-ray exam with measurement of spine, pelvis and

There are three fetal membranes in mammals, namely the yolk sac, allantois and amnion, but only the first two form a placenta. In Monotremata (monotremes), Marsupialia (marsupials) and Placentalia (eutherians), the yolk sac transfers nutrients originating from uterine glandular secretion or the maternal blood. Ontogenetically, the yolk sac of most eutherians loses contact with the peripheral chorion and forms a free splanchnopleuric yolk sac that transfers substances from the exocoelomic cavity, not directly from the endometrium as in marsupials and rodents. This free yolk sac has been preserv

In the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica, fishes of the perciform suborder Notothenioidei dominate the fish fauna and constitute an adaptive radiation and a species flock. The 16 species of dragonfishes of the family Bathydraconidae live from surface waters to nearly 3,000 m and have the greatest overall depth range among notothenioid families. We examined the anatomy and histology of the brain, retina, and cephalic lateral line system of nine bathydraconid species representing 8 of the 11 known genera. We evaluate these data against a cladogram identifying three clades in the family. We prov

We studied the evolution of ventricles by macroscopic examination of the hearts of marine cartilaginous and bony fish, and by angiocardiography and gross examination of the hearts of air-breathing freshwater fish, frogs, turtles, snakes, and crocodiles. A right-sided, thin-walled ventricular lumen is seen in the fish, frog, turtle, and snake. In fish, there is external symmetry of the ventricle, internal asymmetry, and a thick-walled left ventricle with a small inlet chamber. In animals such as frogs, turtles, and snakes, the left ventricle exists as a small-cavitied contractile sponge. The hi

A comparison of the brains of lampreys and hagfishes is carried out in an attempt to reconstruct the anatomy of the brain of the last common ancestor of craniates: i.e., the morphotype of the craniate brain. This brain consisted of tel-, di-, mes-, and rhombencephalic divisions; the presence of a metencephalic/cerebellar division is questionable. All major sensory and motor systems (with the possible exception of the oculomotor system) that are typical of craniates were present in the morphotype. There were extensive bilateral secondary olfactory projections to the telencephalic pallium, as we

Grassi's entomological researches go back to his early years of university study, initially being concerned with agriculture pests. After working in Heidelberg, Grassi's interests turned to basic problems of entomology, such as the evolutionary origin of Miriapoda and Insecta, and termite caste determination. His first investigations into medical entomology related to the problem of bird malaria, which he studied only in relation to the hematic parasites. In 1895, Grassi was appointed Professor of Comparative Anatomy at Rome University, and initiated his entomological collaboration with the Ro

PURPOSE: Differences in skull-base angles between humans, other hominid species and apes might account for the ability of humans to develop complex speech. This study compared midline skull base angles, and angles related to insertion of skull base musculature between these species.
METHODS: 126 human adult, 29 adolescent, 19 children, and 13 fetus skulls were compared to 32 ape and a subset of non-human antiquity hominid casts of skulls (13). Cranial base measurements were taken using an eMicroscribe 3d G2 digitizer. Midline and muscle insertion measurements were obtained.
RESULTS: There we

Euclidean distance matrix analysis (EDMA) differs from most other morphometric methods for the analysis of landmark coordinate data in that it is coordinate-system invariant. However, strict adherence to coordinate-system invariance (for both biological and statistical reasons) introduces some difficulty in using graphic aids for the analysis and interpretation of EDMA results. We present a simple and effective graphic method to help localize important differences in form, growth, or shape by identifying "influential" landmarks. Examples are presented using simulated data and real data involvi

The caecum in man as a part of the large colon (intestinum crassum) differs morphologically and topographically from the caecum of domestic mammals. The caecum in domestic mammals differs not only from the human caecum but also comparatively morphologically and topographically among the domestic mammals. The appendix vermiformis does not exist in domestic mammals, which represents the main difference between the human caecum and that of domestic mammals. There are certainly some differences in the physiological function of the caecum in man and the caecum in domestic mammals, which are carnivo
