Fetal ascites associated with ABO incompatibility: case report and review of the literature.

We report a pregnancy complicated by anti-B isoimmunization that resulted in fetal ascites, anemia, hepatomegaly, and polyhydramnios. A previous pregnancy in the same patient was complicated by neonatal ABO incompatibility. A review of the obstetric literature suggests that ABO incompatibility may cause severe fetal anemia, especially in patients with type O blood or a previous history of ABO incompatibility of the newborn.

Subgaleal hemorrhage in the neonate.

Subgaleal hemorrhage in the neonate, a possible complication of vacuum extraction, is a medical emergency. Neonates delivered with the assistance of vacuum extraction and displaying any signs of neurologic disturbance, blood loss, or anemia should be evaluated promptly for the possibility of hemorrhage. A case report is provided in this article to describe recognition and management of a neonate in hypovolemic shock after vaginal birth assisted by vacuum extraction.

Pregnancy-induced hypertension and early neonatal death: a case-control study.

Literature on the association between pregnancy-induced hypertension and early neonatal death is limited. The present case-control study consisted of 342 early neonatal deaths and 523 frequency-matched controls. After controlling for other factors such as infant sex, gravidity, maternal age, threatened abortion, and maternal anemia, moderate to severe pregnancy-induced hypertension was associated with an increased risk of early neonatal death with apparent dose-effect gradients (odds ratio = 1.8 for moderate and 2.2 for severe). The biologic plausibility of pregnancy-induced hypertension as a

Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn due to an Anti-LU1 (anti-Lua) Alloantibody: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Many erythrocyte antibodies have been reported to cause hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), but Lutheran (LU) alloantibodies are normally not involved in HDFN. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report the obstetrical history of a 29-year-old woman with pregnancy complications due to an anti-LU1 antibody causing fetal anemia and the successful treatment with intrauterine transfusion (IUT). Nonimmune hematological causes for fetal anemia and the presence of further alloantibodies, notably antibodies against low-frequency antigens, could be ruled out. Swiss National Immunoh

Clinical and molecular characterization of 6 children with glutamate-cysteine ligase deficiency causing hemolytic anemia.

Glutathione (gamma-glutamylcysteinylglycine) has diverse functions including free radicals scavenging and modulating many critical cellular processes. Glutathione is synthesized by the consecutive action of the enzymes glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) and glutathione synthetase. GCL is composed of a catalytic subunit encoded by the GCLC gene and a regulatory subunit encoded by the GCLM gene. GCL deficiency due to homozygous mutations in GCLC has been reported in 6 individuals from 4 independent families. All presented with hemolytic anemia and 4 had additional neurological manifestations includ

Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence with blood chimerism in monochorionic dizygotic opposite-sex twins.

We report a case of twin anemia-polycythemia sequence with blood chimerism in monochorionic dizygotic twins born to a 30-year-old woman who conceived via ovulation induction. The neonates developed twin anemia-polycythemia sequence; the female twin had anemia and the male had polycythemia. We detected blood chimerism using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Twin anemia-polycythemia sequence carries not only perinatal risks, but also genetic and immunological implications due to blood chimerism. Although previous reports have described twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in monochorionic

[Neonatal adrenal hematoma: various modes of presentation].

Neonatal adrenal hematoma is a rare condition, most frequently caused by trauma. We report three cases of adrenal hematoma admitted to the Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the A. Harouchi Children's Hospital, the Ibn Rushd University Hospital in Casablanca, Morocco, over a 2-year period from January 2011 to December 2012. The average age of these patients was 5 days. The clinical presentations were diverse; the most common manifestations were intense jaundice in one case, acute adrenal insufficiency in one case, and severe anemia in the other case. Abdominal ultrasonography was

Diamond-Blackfan anemia as an unusual cause of nonimmune hydrops fetalis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Diamond-Blackfan anemia is an unusual cause of childhood anemia that results from an absence of bone marrow red cell precursors. To our knowledge, the in utero development of Diamond-Blackfan anemia has been recognized and reported in only two prior instances. CASE: We report the case of a patient who presented with hydrops fetalis during the second trimester of pregnancy. After prenatal evaluation revealed anemia of undetermined etiology, the fetus received intrauterine transfusion therapy. Despite successful treatment of the anemia and hydrops fetalis, in utero renal failure ens

[Neonatal Pearson syndrome. two case studies].

Among the etiologies of anemia in the newborn, those related to mitochondrial cytopathies are rare. Pearson syndrome is mostly diagnosed during infancy and characterized by refractory sideroblastic anemia with vacuolization of marrow progenitor cells and exocrine pancreatic dysfunction. We describe two diagnosed cases of Pearson syndrome in the early neonatal period caused by severe macrocytic aregenerative anemia. Bone marrow aspiration revealed sideroblastic anemia and vacuolization of erythroblastic precursors. The diagnosis was confirmed by genetic analysis revealing a deletion in the mito

Natural history of hereditary spherocytosis during the first year of life.

Although hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a common disorder of the red cell membrane, its clinical and biologic expression at birth and in early infancy has received little attention. In order to obtain insights into the natural history of HS during infancy, we studied 46 neonates, 39 from families in which 1 of the parents had previously been given a diagnosis of HS and 7 presenting with nonimmune hemolytic anemia and no family history of HS. Of these 46 neonates, 23 were subsequently confirmed to have HS and 23 were found to be healthy. The hematologic and biologic analyses carried out in th

[Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in children: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD deficiency) is the most common red blood cell (RBC) enzyme disorder. The decrease as well as the absence of the enzyme increase RBC vulnerability to oxidative stress caused by exposure to certain medications or intake of fava beans. Among the most common clinical manifestations of this condition, acute hemolysis, chronic hemolysis, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, and an asymptomatic form are observed. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the case of a child who presented hemolytic crisis due to favism. CASE REPORT: A 2 year and 7 month old boy w

A novel ANK1 frameshift mutation associated with neonatal hereditary spherocytosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a genetically inherited hemolytic anemia resulting from erythrocyte membrane defects, predominantly associated with genetic mutations in membrane protein genes such as ANK1 and SPTB. The disease exhibits considerable heterogeneity in both clinical manifestations and age of onset, presenting substantial diagnostic challenges for clinicians, particularly in pediatric cases. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 29-day-old boy who had experienced persistent anemia and a medical history of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia since birth. Upon admission, the inf
