Promises and Challenges of Teleassisted Preceptoring as Part of Democratizing Surgical Expertise. A Systematic Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Telesurgery has advanced with improvements in robotic platforms and communication technologies. While full telesurgery has demonstrated technical feasibility, the use of telesurgical systems to enhance telepreceptoring, particularly through teleassistance, remains limited in clinical practice. A systematic synthesis of the existing evidence is needed to clarify its feasibility, limitations, and potential role in surgical training. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guideline

Sex-Specific Behavioral Features of the Prenatal Valproic Acid Rat Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by restricted behaviors and impaired social and communication skills. The exact cause of autism remains unknown. One promising animal model for studying autism is the valproic acid rat model. Due to a 1 to 4 bias for males in autism occurrence, most animal model studies investigate only males and neglect females. However, female autism often appears different from that observed in males. Females are said to be less regularly diagnosed because they can "mask" their symptoms. Female autism is as necessary to inv

Community perspectives of Ebola Viral Disease in high-risk transmission border regions of Tanzania: a qualitative inquiry.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania faces ever-rising concerns due to the recurrence of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. This necessitates a better understanding of the community perspectives in high-risk regions for effective risk communication and preparedness. METHODS: This rapid ethnographic assessment study used explorative qualitative methods to collect data. People from diverse backgrounds participated in 59 in-depth interviews, 57 Key Informant interviews, and 35 focus group discussions. Data was analysed using a thematic analysis approach.

Toxoplasma gondii Infection Potentiates Cognitive Impairments of Alzheimer's Disease in the BALB/c Mice.

This study tests the hypothesis that in chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection communication among immune cells promotes neuroinflammation through cytokine networks and potentiate cognitive impairments in BALB/c mice with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The animal model of Toxoplasma infection was established by the intraperitoneal inoculation of 20-25 tissue cysts from the Tehran strain of T. gondii . We injected amyloid-beta 1-42 peptide (Aβ1-42, 1 and 2 μl) into the hippocampus of BALB/c mice to establish an animal model of AD. The behavioral experiments such as spatial learning and memory were perf

Unravelling virus community ecology in bats through the integration of metagenomics and community ecology.

The spillover of viruses from wildlife into agricultural animals or humans has profound socioeconomic and public health impact. Vampire bats, found throughout South America, feed directly on humans and other animals and are an important reservoir for zoonotic viruses, including rabies virus. This has resulted in considerable effort in understanding both the ecology of bat-borne viruses and the composition and associated correlates of the structure of entire virus communities in wildlife, particularly in the context of disease control interventions. In a From the Cover article in this issue of

Ewe Vaginal Microbiota: Associations With Pregnancy Outcome and Changes During Gestation.

Reproductive performance is paramount to the success of livestock production enterprises focused on lamb meat production. Reproductive success is influenced by various factors, possibly including the reproductive tract microbial communities present at the time of copulation and throughout pregnancy. There are few publications that identify the vaginal microbial communities of livestock, and even fewer exist for sheep. To compare ewe vaginal microbial communities, vaginal swabs were taken from 67 Hampshire and Hampshire X Suffolk crossbred ewes from the Iowa State University sheep farm at a pre

Honeybee communication during collective defence is shaped by predation.

BACKGROUND: Social insect colonies routinely face large vertebrate predators, against which they need to mount a collective defence. To do so, honeybees use an alarm pheromone that recruits nearby bees into mass stinging of the perceived threat. This alarm pheromone is carried directly on the stinger; hence, its concentration builds up during the course of the attack. We investigate how bees react to different alarm pheromone concentrations and how this evolved response pattern leads to better coordination at the group level. RESULTS: We first present a dose-response curve to the alarm pherom

Understanding the associations between owner and pet demographics on pet body condition among those experiencing homelessness and housing vulnerability in Canada.

Approximately 35 000 people experience homelessness in some form each night in Canada, with similar rates (approximately 1/200 individuals) among developed countries. Ten to twenty percent of those individuals are pet owners. Animal companionship provides a variety of mental and physical benefits to people who are living homeless or vulnerably housed, but many in the non-vulnerable sector, including veterinary professionals and animal welfare advocates, express concern for the health and welfare of these animals. We describe the demographics of a population of animals owned by individuals expe

Hormones, hormesis, and holistic obesity care.

Hormones and hormesis are different words, derived from the same root, hormao (to excite). Hormones are chemical messengers which ensure inter-organ and inter-cellular homeostatic communication. Hormesis is the phenomenon in which exposure to low dose of stressor causes a beneficial response, while higher doses have a neutral or negative effect on functioning of the organism. Hormesis is a well-accepted part of plant and animal biology, as well as certain fields of medicine. This commentary describes how obesity related hormones and hormesis are linked, using examples from reproductive endocri

Integrating zooprophylaxis, insecticide-treated livestock and mosquito nets for malaria control: a One Health proposal.

Malaria transmission persists despite widespread use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) due to multiple factors, including outdoor and early-evening biting and insecticide resistance. In this context, zooprophylaxis, which strategically uses livestock to divert mosquitoes from humans, has shown mixed epidemiological effects. Conversely, treating livestock with topical or systemic insecticides (known as insecticide-treated livestock [ITL]) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce mosquito survival. Combining ITL and zooprophylaxis with ITNs could improve vector control for species that fee

Veterinary Hospice-Enhancing Quality Without Prolonging Suffering.

Veterinary hospice provides a compassionate, patient-centered approach to end-of-life care that emphasizes comfort, dignity, and quality of life over curative intent. This article outlines the principles of hospice care, including patient selection, multimodal pain and symptom management, environmental adaptations, and integration with geriatric care. It highlights the importance of proactive communication, quality-of-life assessment tools, and euthanasia planning to guide families through difficult decisions. By supporting both patients and caregivers, veterinary hospice strengthens the human

Idiopathic chondrolysis condition in two young, wild-caught Cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) reared in captivity.

Idiopathic chondrolysis is a human clinical entity typically reported in adolescent individuals. In this brief communication, we report 2 cases of presumptive idiopathic chondrolysis of the femoral head in Cynomolgus macaques and discuss the clinical symptomatology and pathology of the disease. In detail, we describe the histomorphologic changes of idiopathic chondrolysis and compare these findings with those typically observed in the primary differential diagnoses of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and nonspecific osteoarthritis. Consideration of this entity among differential diagnoses in young C

[Early childhood autism from the behavioral biologic and neurophysiologic viewpoint].

Assuming that the autistic syndromes my be attributed to disturbances in information input and processing, the results of the most important behavioural and neurophysiological investigations made during the past 10 to 15 years are introduced and discussed in brief. Etiological questions are raised, too. Disturbed perception in different sensory systems may also be considered as partial disablement. The environment's reaction to the disturbances potentiates the child's disturbed communication with the environment. It is pointed to that similar behavioural patterns are also known from animal eti

Community perspectives on dogs, health risks, and veterinary care impacts in rural Alaska.

Veterinary care in much of Alaska is extremely limited due to the high cost of living and low access to care. To date, community perspectives on veterinary care and the efficacy of veterinary services introduced have not been documented in Alaska Native communities, in this case specifically the Yukon Kuskokwim (YK) Delta of Alaska. This stymies the introduction of thoughtful public policy created with community insights. It also impedes program funding and awareness of the public health importance of veterinary care. This study aims to utilize information from surveys to form a basis in liter

[Alterations of cerebrospinal fluid pressure in experimental communicating hydrocephalus. Response of CSF-pressure to increased CO2-tension (author's transl)].

The response of cerebrospinal fluid pressure to increased arterial carbon dioxide tension was examined in 5 control dogs and 7 dogs with experimental communicating hydrocephalus. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure in control animals only rose to 35 mm Hg after elevation of the arterial CO2 tension. In dogs with experimental communicating hydrocephalus, however, a significant rise of intracranial pressure to 60 mm Hg can be demonstrated. This is accompained by a marked simultaneous decrease of cerebral perfusion pressure in hydrocephalic animals. Progression of communicating hydrocephalus can be

Sylvatic rabies and the perception of vampire bat activity in communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

An outbreak of sylvatic rabies was reported in indigenous communities located in the Ecuadorian Amazon in November 2011. The objective of this study was to analyze family dwelling characteristics and other sociodemographic factors associated with the perception of an increase in hematophagous bat bites in humans and domestic animals to assist the implementation of intervention policies in the region. A total of 381 households from communities covered by the outbreak response activities were surveyed. Despite being associated with poorer dwelling conditions, the possession of domestic animals i

Establishment of a High Canine Rabies Burden in Haiti through the Implementation of a Novel Surveillance Program [corrected].

The Republic of Haiti is one of only several countries in the Western Hemisphere in which canine rabies is still endemic. Estimation methods have predicted that 130 human deaths occur per year, yet existing surveillance mechanisms have detected few of these rabies cases. Likewise, canine rabies surveillance capacity has had only limited capacity, detecting only two rabid dogs per year, on average. In 2013, Haiti initiated a community-based animal rabies surveillance program comprised of two components: active community bite investigation and passive animal rabies investigation. From January 20

Grief, Bereavement, and Mental Health After Stillbirth.

Following stillbirth, profound grief is well-documented, and co-occurring mental health struggles are common. Distinguishing normal grief from mental health conditions is crucial yet difficult, especially when losses are traumatic. Strong social and emotional support promotes integration and adjustment, but stigma surrounding stillbirth often negatively impacts the degree of support families receive. Many bereaved parents prefer peer-based and animal-assisted supports over conventional clinical services, which may reflect gaps in clinician training in perinatal bereavement care. Accordingly, a

Gut microbiome-mediated regulation of neuroinflammation.

The intestinal microbiome influences neuroinflammatory disease in animal models, and recent studies have identified multiple pathways of communication between the gut and brain. Microbes are able to produce metabolites that enter circulation, can alter inflammatory tone in the intestines, periphery, and central nervous system (CNS), and affect trafficking of immune cells into the brain. Additionally, the vagus nerve that connects the enteric nervous system to the CNS is implicated in modulation of brain immune responses. As preclinical research findings and concepts are applied to humans, the

The Relationship between Canine Behavioral Disorders and Gut Microbiome and Future Therapeutic Perspectives.

Canine behavioral disorders have become one of the most common concerns and challenging issues among dog owners. Thus, there is a great demand for knowledge about various factors affecting dogs' emotions and well-being. Among them, the gut-brain axis seems to be particularly interesting, especially since in many instances the standard treatment or behavioral therapies insufficiently improve animal behavior. Therefore, to face this challenge, the search for novel therapeutic methods is highly required. Existing data show that mammals' gut microbiome, immune system, and nervous system are in con
