Twins in Dairy Herds. Is It Better to Maintain or Reduce a Pregnancy?

Multiple ovulations and so multiple pregnancies have increased recently in dairy cattle. The incidence of the double ovulation impact in high producers at insemination may be over 20%. Twin pregnancies are undesirable as they seriously compromise the welfare and productive lifespan of the cow and herd economy. Clinical problems extend from the time of pregnancy diagnosis to pregnancy loss, abortion or parturition. Early pregnancy loss or abortion of multiple pregnancies lead in most cases to culling. In cows reaching their term, mean productive lifespan is up to about 300 days shorter for cows

Economic aspects of Q fever control in dairy goats.

This paper presents an economic analysis of Q fever control strategies in dairy goat herds in The Netherlands. Evaluated control strategies involved vaccination strategies (being either preventive or reactive) and reactive non-vaccination strategies (i.e., culling or breeding prohibition). Reactive strategies were initiated after PCR positive bulk tank milk or after an abortion storm (abortion percentage in the herd of 5% or more). Preventive vaccination eradicates Q fever in a herd on average within 2 and 7 years (depending on breeding style and vaccination strategy). Economic outcomes reveal

Evolution of swine influenza surveillance and one health governance in Taiwan: from zoonotic risk management to integrated preparedness.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) remain a persistent global threat because of rapid antigenic change, frequent genetic reassortment, and cross-species transmission. Swine act as key "mixing vessels," permitting co-infection with avian and human strains and accelerating viral diversification and zoonotic risk. Effective veterinary surveillance is therefore critical for detecting viral evolution within swine populations and for providing early warning at the animal-human interface. Taiwan, home to approximately 5.5 million pigs and 23.4 million people, offers a representative case for examining how sw

Immunization with Brucella abortus S19Δper Conferred Protection in Water Buffaloes against Virulent Challenge with B. abortus Strain S544.

Vaccination of cattle and buffaloes with Brucella abortus strain 19 has been the mainstay for control of bovine brucellosis. However, vaccination with S19 suffers major drawbacks in terms of its safety and interference with serodiagnosis of clinical infection. Brucella abortus S19∆per, a perosamine synthetase wbkB gene deletion mutant, overcomes the drawbacks of the S19 vaccine strain. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of Brucella abortus S19Δper vaccine candidate in the natural host, buffaloes. Safety of S19∆per, for animals use, was assessed in guinea pigs. Protective efficac

Associations between days in the close-up group and milk production, transition cow diseases, reproductive performance, culling, and behavior around calving of Holstein dairy cows.

The objective of experiment I was to evaluate the association between days in the close-up group (DINCU) and milk production, early lactation diseases, reproductive performance, and culling. In experiment II behavioral changes associated with DINCU were evaluated using a neck-mounted sensor (Smarttag neck, Nedap Livestock Management, Groenlo, the Netherlands). Cow-lactations of 28,813 animals from 14,155 individual cows of 2 farms in northern Germany and western Slovakia, calving between January 2015 and December 2020, were included in the study. After exclusion of cows with a gestation length

Heartworm Disease in Jackals: Unusual Location of Dirofilaria immitis.

PURPOSE: The knowledge of heartworm disease in free ranging wild canid populations is limited. As it is very difficult to monitor this disease in live animals, sporadic findings are mostly obtained by examining culled individuals of game species. METHODS: As a part of a broader study on jackal (Canis aureus) ecology in Serbia, the necropsy of legally hunted animals was performed in 2020. RESULTS: Two cases of heartworm infection with unusually located adult heartworms were diagnosed. The first case is an adult female jackal harvested in the vicinity of the capital city of Belgrade. Three adu

Serological detection and epidemiology of Neospora caninum and Cryptosporidium parvum antibodies in cattle in southern Egypt.

Neospora caninum and Cryptosporidium parvum are intracellular protozoan parasites that are distributed worldwide and of major economical concern in cattle industry. N. caninum can cause abortion storms and high culling rates, whereas C. parvum has zoonotic implications and can cause diarrhea in calves. There are currently no data on the prevalence of neosporosis and cryptosporidiosis in humans or animals in southern Egypt. Prevalence of these two infections was determined in a sample of cattle from two different areas in southern Egypt, Sohag and Qena, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Examination of the laryngeal musculature and recurrent laryngeal nerves of zebra (Equus burchelli) for evidence of idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia.

AIMS: This study was undertaken in order to determine whether wild Burchell's Zebra (Equus burchelli) are affected by Idiopathic Laryngeal Hemiplegia (ILH). ILH has a high prevalence in the domestic horse and a negative control population has not been identified. METHODS: The work was conducted in two phases on two large farms in central Kenya during routine culls. The larynges of 42 zebra were removed and the left and right intrinsic laryngeal adductor and abductor muscles and recurrent laryngeal nerves were isolated. The muscles were weighed and biopsy samples of left and right recurrent la

Haptoglobin response in serum and pleural fluid of tuberculin reactor cattle assessed by culture and gross pathology.

Haptoglobin (Hp) serum concentration is a highly sensitive, non-specific indicator of inflammation. In the present study, following the example of studies conducted on humans, we analysed whether haptoglobin concentrations in pleural fluids and sera in tuberculin-reactor cattle could be an additional biomarker of Mycobacterium bovis infection. The clinical material (serum, n = 60, pleural fluid, n = 80) was collected from 140 dairy cattle (Bos taurus) shortly before culling at slaughter. During postmortem examination, organs were assessed for tuberculosis-like lesions and tissue samples were c

Fowl typhoid is a septicemic disease caused by Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum. It is a host-specific disease primarily affecting chickens and turkeys, although it has been reported in various animal species and sporadically in humans. Here, we present a case of a fowl typhoid outbreak on a turkey poult farm where the source of infection was the hatchery. The birds started showing symptoms of growth retardation at 21 days of age, after which the mortality rates gradually started to increase. Post mortem examination revealed that the main lesions were gr

Thoracic Tumor Associated with a Unilateral Empyema in a Beef Cow: A Case Report.

Tumors in cows are not frequently reported in the literature. They often represent unusual findings in live animals and are incidental at slaughter with rare positive therapeutic outcomes for farmers. A 9-year-old beef cow was referred to the hospital of ruminants of the National Veterinary School of Toulouse, France. The cow started to become sick 10 days prior, and major symptoms were anorexia, arched back, tachycardia, and tachypnea associated with significantly attenuated cardiac and pulmonary sounds upon right-sided auscultation. After specific investigations, a thoracic sarcoma associate

Initial observations of cheek tooth abnormalities in sheep in Slovenia.

Observations were made on a small flock of 50 sheep of the native Slovenian Jezersko-Solcava breed by investigators with dental training. The aim was to determine the range of naturally occurring dental diseases, so postmortem examinations were performed on animals slaughtered for meat or culled due to disease. Additional data were obtained by examination of 25 specimens submitted for investigation of unexplained death at a pathology centre. Seventeen (34 per cent) of the flock had incisor disease but only five became clinically ill; all these five had advanced cheek tooth disease (gingival re

The effect of shade on steer performance after terminal sort.

Heat stress negatively impacts performance and welfare and occurs when total environmental and metabolic thermal load exceeds an animal's ability to dissipate heat. Access to shade has been associated with reductions in body temperature and respiratory rate in cattle, but previous findings on cattle performance has been inconsistent. This pen-level randomized controlled trial evaluated the effects of shade (2.8 m2/head, 100% solar block; n = 12 pens) versus no shade (n = 12 pens) on steer performance following terminal sort at a commercial feedyard in the Pacific Northwest, where animals were

First report of serological and molecular detection of influenza A (H1N1) in European bison (Bison bonasus).

Influenza A virus is a zoonotic pathogen capable of infecting a wide range of hosts, yet data on infections in wild ruminants are limited. The European bison (Bison bonasus), Europe’s largest terrestrial mammal, had not previously been identified as a host for Influenza A virus. This study aimed to provide the first molecular and serological evidence of H1N1 pandemic influenza A virus (A/H1N1pdm) infection in European bison, contributing to the understanding of Influenza A virus ecology at the wildlife–livestock interface. We retrospectively analysed 335 serum samples collected from European b

Assessing the potential role of deer in the dissemination of Mycobacterium bovis infection to cattle in Northern Ireland.

Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of animal tuberculosis, exhibits a broad host range - infecting, inducing pathology and transmitting from both bovine and wildlife hosts. Considerable effort has been extended to understanding the role wildlife may play in persistence and spread of infection. Infected cervids can spread infection to conspecifics and sympatric livestock as observed in the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) population of Michigan, USA. However, in other territories, there is debate about whether cervids act as maintenance or spillover hosts, with ecological context

Paratuberculosis: The Hidden Killer of Small Ruminants.

Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a contagious and chronic enteric disease of ruminants and many non-ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), and is characterised by diarrhoea and progressive emaciation with consequent serious economic losses due to death, early culling, and reduced productivity. In addition, indirect economic losses may arise from trade restrictions. Besides being a production limiting disease, PTB is a potential zoonosis; MAP has been isolated from Crohn's disease patients and was associated with other human diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Hashi

Characterisation of Peptide5 systemic administration for treating traumatic spinal cord injured rats.

Systemic administration of a Connexin43 mimetic peptide, Peptide5, has been shown to reduce secondary tissue damage and improve functional recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). This study investigated safety measures and potential off-target effects of Peptide5 systemic administration. Rats were subjected to a mild contusion SCI using the New York University impactor. One cohort was injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of fluorescently labelled Peptide5 and euthanised at 2 or 4 h post-injury for peptide distribution analysis. A second cohort received intraperitoneal injections of P

The effect of slurry on skin permeability to methylene blue dye in dairy cows with and without a history of digital dermatitis.

This study aimed to determine whether there was a difference in skin permeability to methylene blue dye or skin morphology between dairy cows that differed in their susceptibility to digital dermatitis (DD) and to assess the effect of contact with slurry on skin permeability. Twenty nine dairy cows were monitored for DD during the winter housing period and classed as DD+ (previous DD infection, n = 17), or DD- (no recorded infection, n = 12). The animals were culled and a skin sample was taken from above the heel of each hind foot and frozen. Samples were later defrosted and one sample from ea

Routine serum biomarkers and lightgbm modeling for the diagnosis of abomasal ulcers in culled dairy cows.

Abomasal ulcer (AU) is a common condition in dairy cows that significantly affects productivity and longevity. This study evaluated the diagnostic value of serum biomarkers and the fecal occult blood test (FOBT), and tested a Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) model to predict ulcer occurrence. Postmortem analyses were performed on 304 culled dairy cows, from which blood and fecal samples were collected. Animals were classified according to the presence (n = 249) or absence (n = 55) of abomasal ulcers. No individual biomarker, including gastrin or pepsinogen, demonstrated consistent di
