Migratory connectivity and barrier-crossing flights of Vermivora warblers are associated with synoptic weather conditions.

Migratory birds often navigate inhospitable barriers (e.g. oceans, deserts) during migration. Barrier crossings are frequently associated with increased rates of mortality and likely impose selective pressures on migratory species that shape their behaviour and distribution. Therefore, understanding how weather conditions influence the behaviour of migratory birds at a major barrier can provide insight into the adaptive evolution of long-distance migrations involving barrier crossings and how changing climatic conditions might affect migratory species in the future. We used light-level geoloca

[The geese who flew home for Christmas].

Gray geese of the bar-headed type (Anser indicus synonym: Eulabeia indica) perform trans-Himalayan migratory flight at extreme altitude. The physiological mechanisms include hyperventilation of cold air, increased lung diffusion capacity, proton gradients, high muscular temperature, amino acid mutation in haemoglobin and cytochrome oxidase, re-location of mitochondria, and extreme shifts in the oxy-haemoglobin dissociation curve due to Bohr- and temperature effects. The second annual migration takes place in late autumn, and the bar-headed geese come home in due time before Christmas.

Storms drive altitudinal migration in a tropical bird.

Although migration is a widespread and taxonomically diverse behaviour, the ecological factors shaping migratory behaviour are poorly understood. Like other montane taxa, many birds migrate along elevational gradients in the tropics. Forty years ago, Alexander Skutch postulated that severe storms could drive birds to migrate downhill. Here, we articulate a novel mechanism that could link storms to mortality risks via reductions in foraging time and provide, to our knowledge, the first tests of this hypothesis in the White-ruffed Manakin (Corapipo altera), a small partially migratory frugivore

Synthesis of Biotin-Modified Galactosylated Chitosan Nanoparticles and Their Characteristics in Vitro and in Vivo.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Our previous study found that a nanoparticle drug delivery system that operates as a drug carrier and controlled release system not only improves the efficacy of the drugs but also reduces their side effects. However, this system could not efficiently target hepatoma cells. The aim of this study was to synthesize biotin-modified galactosylated chitosan nanoparticles (Bio-GC) and evaluate their characteristics in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Bio-GC nanomaterials were synthesized, and confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic re

Porcine pancreatic ductal epithelial cells transformed with KRASG12D and SV40T are tumorigenic.

We describe our initial studies in the development of an orthotopic, genetically defined, large animal model of pancreatic cancer. Primary pancreatic epithelial cells were isolated from pancreatic duct of domestic pigs. A transformed cell line was generated from these primary cells with oncogenic KRAS and SV40T. The transformed cell lines outperformed the primary and SV40T immortalized cells in terms of proliferation, population doubling time, soft agar growth, transwell migration and invasion. The transformed cell line grew tumors when injected subcutaneously in nude mice, forming glandular s

Simultaneous impact of atorvastatin and mesenchymal stem cells for glioblastoma multiform suppression in rat glioblastoma multiform model.

Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) is known as an aggressive glial neoplasm. Recently incorporation of mesenchymal stem cells with anti-tumor drugs have been used due to lack of immunological responses and their easy accessibility. In this study, we have investigated the anti-proliferative and apoptotic activity of atorvastatin (Ator) in combination of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on GBM cells in vitro and in vivo. The MSCs isolated from rats and characterized for their multi-potency features. The anti-proliferative and migration inhibition of Ator and MSCs were evaluated by MTT and scratch migrati

Sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor antagonism enhances proliferation and migration of engrafted neural progenitor cells in a model of viral-induced demyelination.

The oral drug FTY720 affects sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) signaling on targeted cells that bear the S1P receptors S1P1, S1P3, S1P4, and S1P5. We examined the effect of FTY720 treatment on the biology of mouse neural progenitor cells (NPCs) after transplantation in a viral model of demyelination. Intracerebral infection with the neurotropic JHM strain of mouse hepatitis virus (JHMV) resulted in an acute encephalomyelitis, followed by demyelination similar in pathology to the human demyelinating disease, multiple sclerosis. We have previously reported that intraspinal transplantation of mouse N

Broncho-alveolar macrophages express chemokines associated with leukocyte migration in a mouse model of asthma.

The migration of eosinophils and lymphocytes into airways is a hallmark of allergic asthma; however, the role of broncho-alveolar macrophages (BAMs) in this inflammatory process has not been fully elucidated. Using a murine Ova model of allergic airway disease (AAD), RNA isolated from BAMs was used to assess differential gene expression via microarray and qRT-PCR. Significant increases in WBCs, eosinophilia, mucus accumulation and goblet cell hyperplasia were observed in Ova sensitized and challenged mice, which correlated with increased expression of genes associated with alternatively activa

Schistosoma mansoni: migration and attrition of challenge parasites in naive rats and rats protected with vaccine serum.

The migration of isotopically labelled Schistosoma mansoni challenge cercariae was monitored, by means of squashed organ autoradiography, in naive Sprague-Dawley rats and rats protected with serum harvested from twice vaccinated donors. The majority of challenge larvae migrated from the skin to the lungs in both groups of rats, but a significantly increased number of larvae was retained in the lungs of serum recipients on day 8 post-challenge. An average of 25% of the challenge population succeeded in migrating to the livers of naive rats by day 14, compared to only 13% in passively protected

The visual connections of the adult flatfish, Achirus lineatus.

Metamorphosis in the flatfish is characterized by the migration of one eye around the dorsal surface of the head to a position adjacent to the other eye on the new top side of the animal. The visual connections of the adult flatfish, Achirus lineatus, were examined. Either the migrating or non-migrating eye was removed and the animal allowed to survive for one to three weeks. Alternate sections of the brain were stained by a modification of the Fink-Heimer technique, or with cresyl violet. The diencephalic visual connections of the flatfish were similar to those of other teleosts with contrala

A crosslinking positive control for any in vivo comet assay tissue.

OECD TG 489 recognizes that some modifications of the in vivo comet assay (e.g., longer electrophoresis times) can detect DNA crosslink inductions expressed as DNA migration decreases. But the application of these methods in regulated safety testing has been limited because identifying an in vivo crosslinking positive control for every tissue that can be evaluated with the comet assay can be very challenging. Most crosslinking agents induce crosslinks in just one tissue (e.g., site of contact) with the agent's toxicity limiting exposure and effects induced in other tissues. This complication c

The Importance, Challenges and Solutions of a Changing Climate for Conserving Migratory Animals and the Ecosystem Services They Provide.

Each year, billions of animals undertake migratory journeys, resulting in large transfers of energy across the globe. Population declines in many migratory species have affected these, reducing ecosystem resilience. We quantify the value lost and show how conserving migratory species can contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation, and deliver socio-economic benefits.

Storms, budworms and vagrant birds in a changing world.

The seasonal migration of billions of birds is one of the most spectacular events in the natural world's annual cycle. Migration lets birds exploit spatiotemporally dynamic resources and involves complex trade-offs for survivorship. The migratory movements of individual birds are routinely influenced by atmospheric and ecological connections across long distances. Suboptimal conditions during active migration often lead to bird displacement, sometimes en masse. Birds that are displaced outside of their regular geographic ranges are known as vagrants, arguably the most spectacular instances of

High annual-cycle repeatability suggests low flexibility to environmental changes in a near-threatened migratory shorebird.

Migratory species often repeat spatio-temporal patterns within their annual cycle. Although this may help to promote knowledge about local features and site quality, stereotyped behaviours may also create an ecological trap by preventing the flexibility required to adjust to environmental changes. Using a long-term international dataset, this study assesses 24 spatial and temporal parameters describing the repeatability of the entire migratory cycle in 94 individuals of the migratory near-threatened Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata) that were tracked for up to 7 consecutive years using high-r

Low genetic differentiation and symmetric migration between urban and forest populations of great tits.

Gene flow may be limited between urban and non-urban populations of wild animals that can influence their landscape-level genetic structure and potential to adapt to new ecological conditions. To test this idea, we genetically characterized great tit (Parus major) populations breeding in an urban and a forest area 3.5 km apart, differing in several phenotypic traits some of which may contribute to adaptation to urban living. We used 16 microsatellite markers to genotype 189 breeding adult individuals (119 urban and 70 forest birds) and (1) tested whether the two populations are genetically dif

Construction of the graph genomes of Takifugu provides novel insights into the genomic mechanisms of population structure and migratory traits.

BACKGROUND: The genus Takifugu includes highly valued fish species known for their delicate flavor, making them popular in multiple countries. However, many species from this genus face significant threats. In order to better understand the genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics of Takifugu, a syntelog-based pan-genome and graph genome were constructed using the data of seven Takifugu species. RESULTS: The analysis of 28,085 syntelog groups (SGs) composed of protein-coding genes revealed that only 57.3% of the SGs were shared among all individuals, whereas the remaining genes presented p

Preliminary insights into fish movements beyond the massive Iron Gate dams on the Danube River using acoustic telemetry.

Upstream fish movement in the Danube River at the Iron Gate is blocked by the massive hydropower dams and ship locks, as shown by tracking six fish species (vimba bream Vimba vimba, common nase Chondrostoma nasus, barbel Barbus barbus, asp Leuciscus aspius, Pontic shad Alosa immaculata and common carp Cyprinus carpio). In the absence of effective fish passage systems, the current level of river connectivity is insufficient to support upstream movement and migration for this diverse, multispecies fish community. The tagged cyprinids displayed evidence of migratory behaviour. Individuals of vimb

Elucidating the migrations of European seabass from the southern north sea using mark-recapture data, acoustic telemetry and data storage tags.

The movement ecology of European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, remains poorly understood, especially in the northern ranges of its distribution. To investigate migration patterns of seabass from the southern North Sea, we combined data from different projects from four countries using various tagging techniques. This resulted in 146 recaptures (out of 5598 externally marked seabass), 138 detected animals (out of 162 seabass fitted with an acoustic transmitter) and 76 archived depth and temperature series (out of 323 seabass with an archival tag). Using geolocation modelling, we distinguished

Using genetic comparisons of populations from Arizona, Mexico, and Texas to investigate fall armyworm migration in the American southwest.

Fall armyworm (FAW) is a global agricultural pest, causing substantial economic losses in corn and many other crops. Complicating efforts to control this pest is its capacity for long distance flights, which has been described in greatest detail for the central and eastern sections of the United States. FAW infestations are also routinely found in agricultural areas in southern Arizona, which lie beyond the western limits of the mapped migratory pathways. Climate suitability analysis found that the affected Arizona locations cannot support permanent FAW populations, indicating that these FAW m

Tracking elusive timber rattlers with molecular genetics.

Most biologists would agree that understanding the factors that influence gene flow among populations is important, because population connectivity is critical to effective conservation and management as well as to issues such as disease transmission and the degree of local adaptation. Nonetheless, our understanding of the mechanistic determinants of gene flow remains abysmally limited for many types of organisms. Predictably, some of the biggest gaps involve animals that are rare, secretive, and difficult to collect or handle - and thus, remain relatively unstudied for other traits as well. L
