Investigation of Cerebral Mitochondrial Injury in a Porcine Survivor Model of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless and odorless gas that is a leading cause of environmental poisoning in the USA with substantial mortality and morbidity. The mechanism of CO poisoning is complex and includes hypoxia, inflammation, and leukocyte sequestration in brain microvessel segments leading to increased reactive oxygen species. Another important pathway is the effects of CO on the mitochondria, specifically at cytochrome c oxidase, also known as Complex IV (CIV). One of the glaring gaps is the lack of rigorous experimental models that may recapitulate survivors of acute C

Some food toxic for pets.

According to world statistics, dogs and cats are the species that owners most frequently seek assistance with potential poisonings, accounting 95-98% of all reported animal cases. Exposures occur more commonly in the summer and in December that is associated with the holiday season. The majority (>90%) of animal poisonings are accidental and acute in nature and occur near or at the animal owner's home. Feeding human foodstuff to pets may also prove dangerous for their health. The aim of this review was to present common food items that should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally) to dog

Acrylamide autonomic neuropathy in the cat. Part 2. Effects on mesenteric vascular control.

Mesenteric blood flow has been studied in cats poisoned with acrylamide. In severely poisoned animals, there is impairment of the neural control of the mesenteric vascular bed. The diminished response of the mesenteric bed to tyramine administration, the increased response to phenylephrine and noradrenaline and the failure of the nerve endings to take up exogenous noradrenaline are indicative of damage to the postganglionic unmyelinated fibres. The studies support the view that disturbance of blood pressure control in autonomic neuropathy is related to the impaired vasomotor control of the spl

Marijuana Poisoning in Canines in the Aburrá Valley (Antioquia-Colombia), 2023-2024.

Background and Aim: Marijuana poisoning in canines is still considered a taboo topic. Poisoning in pets is becoming increasingly common, in many cases resulting in severe clinical signs, such as ataxia, urinary incontinence, mydriasis, depression, and hyperesthesia. Colombia does not have any reliable test for the diagnosis of exposure to cannabis in animals, and it is not an obligation to report this kind of poisoning to the authorities. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the frequency of cases compatible with tetrahydrocannabinoid (THC) poisoning in canines in the A

Dietary Mycotoxins: An Overview on Toxicokinetics, Toxicodynamics, Toxicity, Epidemiology, Detection, and Their Mitigation with Special Emphasis on Aflatoxicosis in Humans and Animals.

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of filamentous fungi and ubiquitous dietary contaminants. Aflatoxins, a group of mycotoxins with high prevalence and toxicity, have raised a high level of public health concern, the most prevalent and toxic being aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Many aspects appertaining to AFB1 poisoning are not well understood. Yet this information is necessary to devise appropriate surveillance and mitigation strategies against human and animal aflatoxicosis. This review provides an in-depth update of work carried out on mycotoxin poisoning, particularly aflatoxicosis in humans and

Possible role for anisodamine in organophosphate poisoning.

In cases of organophosphate poisoning, patients are treated with a combination of antidotes. In addition to these poison-directed antidotes, patients may require extra oxygen and artificial ventilation; other modalities may also be needed due to the wide range of toxic effects. Anisodamine is a belladonna alkaloid, and like other drugs from this family is non subtype-selective muscarinic, and a nicotinic cholinoceptor antagonist, which has been employed in traditional Chinese medicine. As a muscarinic antagonist, it displays similar pharmacological effects to atropine and scopolamine. However,

Brighter-colored paper wasps (Polistes dominula) have larger poison glands.

INTRODUCTION: Aposematism is a defense system against predators consisting of the toxicity warning using conspicuous coloration. If the toxin production and aposematic coloration is costly, only individuals in good physical condition could simultaneously produce abundant poison and striking coloration. In such cases, the aposematic coloration not only indicates that the animal is toxic, but also the toxicity level of individuals. The costs associated with the production of aposematic coloration would ensure that individuals honestly indicate their toxicity levels. In the present study, we exam

Toxicology of Astragalus lusitanicus Lam.

Astragalus lusitanicus is a toxic legume grown in Morocco and in some other Mediterranean countries. In small ruminants, poisoning by this plant is dominated by nervous signs characterized by many cycles of excitement-depression. Macroscopic examination of poisoned animals showed congestive lesions and oedema in the brain and lungs. Microscopic lesions consisted mainly of vacuolar degeneration in neurons, hepatocytes and in spleen and kidney cells. Serum activity of AST and CK as well as blood glucose and urea were increased as a result of poisoning. However, serum activity of alpha-mannosidas

A poisonous surprise under the coat of the African crested rat.

Plant toxins are sequestered by many animals and the toxicity is frequently advertised by aposematic displays to deter potential predators. Such 'unpalatability by appropriation' is common in many invertebrate groups and also found in a few vertebrate groups. However, potentially lethal toxicity by acquisition has so far never been reported for a placental mammal. Here, we describe complex morphological structures and behaviours whereby the African crested rat, Lophiomys imhausi, acquires, dispenses and advertises deterrent toxin. Roots and bark of Acokanthera schimperi (Apocynaceae) trees are

Salt poisoning in beef cattle.

Salt poisoning has been described under various circumstances in adult cattle. Presenting clinical signs in 6 Holstein beef cattle with such poisoning were primarily dysfunction of the central nervous system and included ataxia, opisthotonus, nystagmus, depression, muscle twitching and intermittent convulsions, as well as abdominal pain and polydipsia. Diarrhea occurred in 2, and blindness in 3/6 cattle. Hypernatremia (161.8 - 178.8 mmol/L) and hyperosmolality (331.81 - 366.18 mOsm/L) were present in all animals. To treat the affected cattle, access to fresh water was restricted, vascular volu

Toxic Plants and Their Impact on Livestock Health and Economic Losses: A Comprehensive Review.

Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed. This presents significant risks to livestock health and can impede economic growth. In several developing countries, including Ethiopia, traditional communities have depended on medicinal plants for treating livestock and human diseases. The inciden

Intravenous Lipid Emulsion does NOT have a role in severe poisoning: CON.

Intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) has been suggested as a potential universal antidote for cardiovascular and central nervous system toxicity resulting from a multitude of pharmaceutical and nonpharmaceutical poisonings. While there is some evidence to suggest that ILE may have a positive effect in cardiovascular system toxicity after accidental intravenous lipophilic local anaesthetic overdose, this cannot be extrapolated to cases of severe poisoning resulting from oral drug overdose. Treatment recommendations are based upon variable outcome animal studies and low-level clinical evidence with

[Trimeresurus albolabris (white-lipped green pit viper) - bite report: case report].

Toxicology is a specialized scientific discipline, focusing on microbiological, botanical and animal venoms, poisons and toxins. This discipline includes more than just the chemistry and mode of action of a toxin, but also with the biology of venom or poison producing organism, the structure and function of the venom apparatus, as well as the use of the venom or poison. The discipline of toxicology involves the study of the poison on living organisms and the therapy of the intoxication. A genus Trimeresurus, to which belongs Green Pit Viper, is large and includes around 36 types. Snake venoms

[Poisoning caused by chemicals for plant protection in Poland in 2001].

A total number of 220 cases of poisoning caused by chemicals for plant protection were registered in Poland in 2001 (incidence 0.57 per 100,000 population). The large number of cases occurred in one outbreak (104 cases; 47.3%). In this outbreak inhalation exposure took place in a school after spraying of HUKINOL AL (repelant for animals) by pupils. Course of disease in these cases was mild. Among remaining cases there were:--poisoning after intake of chemicals for plant protection (14.5% after suicidal intake, 21.4% after accidental intake, 1.4% after intake with fruits and one case--undetermi

Epidemiological, Poisoning Characteristics and Treatment Outcomes of Patients Admitted to the National Poisoning Control Centre at Karachi, Pakistan: A Six Month Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Any substance if taken in enough quantity can be defined as a poison provided it causes physiological or anatomical harm. It can range from food products to therapeutic medications to toxins and chemicals. Animals, plants, and insects also produce toxins, which are poisonous. While any route of ingestion is dangerous, most poisons are either taken by mouth or inhaled. Rarely intravenous access as in the case of heroin/opoids overdose is seen as well. Poisoning whether deliberate or otherwise is a growing problem of the modern world. Young people are disproportionally affected by

Peptides derived from exocrine secretions of venomous animals used as traditional Chinese "worm" medicines.

The term "worm medicines" (Chong Yao) in Traditional Chinese Medicine encompasses a diverse category of small animal-derived therapeutics, including arthropods, amphibians, and reptiles, rather than strictly vermiform organisms. Many of these animals, such as scorpions, centipedes, toads, and horseflies, are toxic, and have been employed in clinical practice for centuries, despite limited understanding of their active compounds and underlying modes of action. Among the bioactive constituents extracted from these taxa, peptides represent a particularly promising class, with over 2 000 identifie

Poisoning of dairy heifers by mercurous chloride.

Mercury poisoning was diagnosed in four dairy heifers, three of which died. The clinical signs were variable and included salivation, excessive thirst, extreme depression and severe diarrhoea. Postmortem examinations revealed inflammation and ulceration of the alimentary tract, pulmonary and cardiac haemorrhages, pallor of the kidney cortices and perirenal oedema. The kidney mercury concentrations were in the range 58 to 91 micrograms/g wet tissue. It is believed that the animals were poisoned by the ingestion of soil contaminated with mercurous chloride.

Illicit Fentanyl Exposures in Cats and Dogs Reported to a North American Veterinary Poison Control Center From 2019 to 2023.

OBJECTIVES: As a prominent concern for addiction medicine, illicit fentanyl and its analogues have been implicated in numerous poisonings among people. Many households in Canada and the United States include cats or dogs as pets who may be exposed to substances such as fentanyl. METHODS: This case-series examined data from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Poison Control, a 24-hour call center for animal poison-related emergencies. Descriptive statistics were used on records in which cats or dogs had a reported exposure to illicit fentanyl between 2019 and 2023.

Increased risk for hypothyroidism after anticholinesterase pesticide poisoning: a nationwide population-based study.

PURPOSE: Previous animal studies have reported that acute anticholinesterase pesticide (organophosphate and carbamate) poisoning may affect thyroid hormones. However, there is no human study investigating the association between hypothyroidism and anticholinesterase pesticide poisoning, and therefore, we conducted a retrospective nationwide population-based cohort study to delineate this issue. METHODS: We identified 10,372 anticholinesterase pesticide poisoning subjects and matched 31,116 non-anticholinesterase pesticide poisoning subjects between 2003 and 2012 from the Nationwide Poisoning
