Determination of multidrug-resistant populations and molecular characterization of complex Klebsiella spp. in wild animals by multilocus sequence typing.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: One of the most significant public health concerns is multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms. Klebsiella spp. have been at the forefront of causing different types of infections such as bacteremia, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, enteritis, and sepsis in humans as well as animals. This study aimed to determine the genomic similarity between Klebsiella spp. isolated from wild animal samples and those described in the Institut Pasteur genomic database to verify the spread of resistant clones regionally in the state of Mato Grosso, and to compare the epidemiological dat

DNA-based detection of Leptospira wolffii, Giardia intestinalis and Toxoplasma gondii in environmental feces of wild animals in Korea.

Leptospira, Giardia intestinalis and Toxoplasma gondii infections are reported in humans and animals worldwide, but molecular surveillance of these pathogens in Korean wildlife is still limited. Here, we examined the prevalence of these pathogens in environmental feces of Eurasian otters, leopard cats and raccoon dogs using nested PCR followed by DNA sequencing. G. intestinalis was detected in all of three animals, while T. gondii was detected only in leopard cats. Leptospira wolffii was detected in raccoon dog and Eurasian otter. Our results suggest that these animals can act as a reservoir o

Dermatobiosis in Panthera onca: first description and multinomial logistic regression to estimate and predict parasitism in captured wild animals.

Dermatobia hominis is a parasite widely distributed in neotropical regions. The parasitic phase of the cycle is characterized by the formation of a subcutaneous nodule in the host, which can promote infestation by other dipterans and skin infections. The aim of this report is to register parasitism by D. hominis in free-ranging Panthera onca captured in the Brazilian wetland and to determine significant biological and meteorological factors that are likely to influence the presence of larval parasitism in captured wild jaguars. Between 2011 to 2020, 34 jaguars were captured and examined manual

Prevalence and distribution of Echinococcus spp. in wild and domestic animals across Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a worldwide zoonosis, is highly prevalent in Africa particularly in northern and eastern Africa where data are more abundant than other regions. However, harmonization of available data through systematic review and meta-analysis may foster improved transboundary cooperation for the control of CE in Africa. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, research articles (from 2000 to 2019) were retrieved from ScienceDirect, PubMed, African Journals OnLine and Google Scholar databases. A total of 98 studies of 806,624 animal

Special challenges of maintaining wild animals in captivity in Australia and New Zealand: prevention of infectious and parasitic diseases.

The authors review infectious and parasitic diseases of eutherians (excluding marine mammals), marsupials, reptiles and birds in Australia and New Zealand. The diseases discussed are those which are common and/or more likely to affect humans. The emphasis is placed on the type of animal affected, the epidemiology, and hence the control or prevention measures necessary. Clinical signs, pathology and treatment are not considered in any detail.

Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. XXXIV. Arthropod parasites of nyalas in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal.

Seventy-three nyalas (Tragelaphus angasii) in the Umfolozi, Mkuzi and Ndumu Game Reserves in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal were examined for arthropod parasites during 1983 and 1984. In addition, six animals were examined during 1994. Ten ixodid tick species, two louse species and a louse fly species were recovered. The nyalas were good hosts of all stages of development of Boophilus decoloratus, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Rhipicephalus muehlensi and the immature stages of Amblyomma hebraeum and Rhipicephalus maculatus. Adult male animals harboured more adult ticks, biting lice and louse fl

[Trichinellosis in slaughtered and wild animals in Switzerland using a digestion method and a serologic method (E/S-ELISA)].

For many decades trichinellosis has not been reported among Swiss domestic pigs. Considering the fact that Trichinella occurs in a sylvatic cycle in Switzerland, a study was designed to reevaluate the present epidemiologic situation by investigating 10,904 fattening pigs, 218 pigs with free access to pasturage or being kept on an alp, 104 domestic boars, 106 horses, 44 wild boars and 538 foxes using a direct and an indirect diagnostic technique (digestion method and serology with ELISA and an excretory/secretory antigen, respectively). The digestion method was performed according to EC-guideli

Global distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes in Escherichia coli isolated from wild animals using genomes available in public databases.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing worldwide health challenge fueled by the improper and/or excessive use of antimicrobials in humans and animals. Wild animals can acquire AMR from waste released into the environment, being a good bioindicator of AMR pollution in that compartment. This study aimed to estimate the global distribution of antimicrobial-resistant genes (ARGs) in Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from wild animals (birds and mammals) and to assess their role as sentinels for the study of AMR in the environment. A total of 4436 E. coli genomes were retrieved from three p

Using Digital PCR to Unravel the Occurrence of Piroplasmids, Bartonella spp., and Borrelia spp. in Wild Animals from Brazil.

Piroplasmids (Babesia spp., Rangelia spp., Theileria spp., Cytauxzoon spp.) are tick-borne apicomplexan protozoa that infect, depending on the species, erythrocytes and leucocytes in a wide variety of mammals and birds. The genera Bartonella and Borrelia include vector-borne bacteria that can infect and cause disease in both animals and humans. Detection of hemotropic bacteria and piroplasmids in wild animals is often challenging due to low bacteremia or parasitemia. Digital (d)PCR has proven to be an effective modality for the detection and quantification of DNA of hemotropic pathogens with l

Occurrence and assessment of antibiotic resistance and virulence of Enterococcus spp. strains isolated from fecal samples of wild animals.

About 60% of the etiological agents of human infections are of animal origin, and the microorganisms causing them can be isolated not only from farmed and domestic animals, but also from wildlife. Enterococcus spp. may exhibit intrinsic or acquired resistance to many antibiotic groups, posing significant therapeutic challenges. The aim of this study was to identify and assess the antibiotic resistance and virulence genes of Enterococcus strains isolated from fecal samples of wild animals. The 118 strains were obtained from deer (n = 38), wild boar (n = 29), hare (n = 19), roe deer (n = 12), fa

New records of endoparasites and ectoparasites in free-living road-killed wild animals in the Pampa biome, Southern Brazil.

Wild animals host a wide variety of parasites, and the disorders caused by these parasites are among the most prevalent and significant infectious diseases affecting wildlife. The investigation of parasitic fauna is crucial for the conservation of wild animals, domestic populations, and humans. Therefore, the aim of the study was to survey endo- and ectoparasites in free-living wildlife in southern Brazil. Carcasses of road-killed wildlife were collected from highways in the Pelotas microregion, Rio Grande do Sul. All carcasses were necropsied, and endo- and ectoparasites were collected and id

Detection of Coxiella burnetii DNA in Peridomestic and Wild Animals and Ticks in an Endemic Region (Canary Islands, Spain).

Coxiella burnetii, the etiological agent of human Q fever, can infect mammals, birds, and arthropods. The Canary Islands (Spain) are considered an endemic territory, with a high prevalence in both humans and livestock. Nonetheless, there is no epidemiological information about the wild and peridomestic cycles of C. burnetii. Tissue samples from rodents on farms (100) and wild rabbits (129) were collected and assessed by PCR to detect C. burnetii DNA. In parallel, ticks were also collected from vegetation (1169), livestock (335), domestic dogs (169), and wild animals (65). Globally, eight roden

Wild and Domestic Animal Exposure among Deceased Persons Referred for Organ Procurement, United States.

Rabies is transmissible through transplantation. Wild mammal bites or scratches carry a high risk for rabies, but their frequency among organ donors is unknown. During 2024, an estimated 12 (95% CI 7-20; 0.07%) of 16,989 deceased US donors had high-risk exposures. Identifying such exposures can mitigate rabies transmission to transplant recipients.

The mobilome of Staphylococcus aureus from wild ungulates reveals epidemiological links at the animal-human interface.

Staphylococcus aureus thrives at animal-human-environment interfaces. A large-scale work from our group indicated that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in commensal S. aureus strains from wild ungulates is associated with agricultural land cover and livestock farming, raising the hypothesis that AMR genes in wildlife strains may originate from different hosts, namely via exchange of mobile genetic elements (MGE). In this work, we generate the largest available dataset of S. aureus draft genomes from wild ungulates in Portugal and explore their mobilome, which can determine important traits such
