We describe an unusual case of proventriculitis associated with Cryptosporidium baileyi in a 7-wk-old snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) chick kept at a zoo. Necropsy of this animal revealed diffuse mucosal thickening of the proventriculus. Subsequent histopathological examinations of the proventriculus showed marked ductal epithelial hyperplasia with intestinal metaplasia and severe inflammatory cell infiltration in the lamina propria and submucosa. These lesions were associated with numerous periodic-acid-Schiff-positive cryptosporidia-like protozoan parasites. Moreover, oocysts found within the la

Addressing the presence of stereotypies - repetitive, functionless behaviors - has been at the forefront of contemporary welfare research in zoos. Stereotypies present themselves in many different forms, dependent on the biology of a species, internal and external motivational factors, individual animals' history, and early development. In the case of giraffes, a popular and charismatic species found in zoos, stereotypies concerning the mouth and tongue - oral stereotypies - are especially prevalent. Various hypotheses have been developed in tandem with the observation of giraffe oral stereoty

Ticks are vectors of numerous agents of medical importance and may be infected by various Chlamydia-related bacteria, such as members of Parachlamydiaceae and Rhabdochlamydiaceae families, which are sharing the same biphasic life cycle with the pathogenic Chlamydia. However, the veterinary importance of ticks and of their internalized pathogens remains poorly studied. Thus, we wondered (i) whether the prevalence of ticks was higher in zoological gardens than in control areas with similar altitude, vegetation, humidity and temperature, and (ii) whether the presence of Chlamydia-related bacteria

Short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) are myrmecophages, or ant and termite insectivore specialists, and replicating their exact diet in captivity is problematic. Diets for captive animals often incorporate raw meat, eggs and cat food mixed together with water, and vitamin and mineral supplements. These diets have promoted a number of health problems in captive echidnas, such as gastritis, cystitis, gut impaction, obesity, and diarrhea. A manufactured diet was designed and three echidnas from two zoos were transitioned onto this diet to assess the acceptability and digestibility of th

Cryptococcosis, a globally distributed mycotic disease caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or C. gattii, has been extensively studied in various domestic animals and humans. However, non-domestic species have often been overlooked in the literature, with limited attention given to their susceptibility and contribution to the epidemiology of the disease. In this study, a captive two-year-old Cape hyrax in a Japanese zoo exhibited neurological symptoms and torticollis, ultimately succumbing to the infection. Necropsy and pathological analyses, including histopathological techniques and PCR, reveal

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil). Leishmania sp. can naturally infect several species of mammals, and the domestic dog is the most important reservoir of the disease in South America. This report describes five cases of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazilian canids. Among 15 animals kept in captivity in a zoo in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), two animals, a bush dog (Spheotos venaticos) and a hoary zorro (Lycalopex vetulus) were serologically positive and developed clinical signs of VL, whereas three other canids, including

Introduction and Objective. Because of the armed conflict in Ukraine, companion, farm and captive wild animals have been moved in a simplified procedure across the Polish-Ukrainian border. For that reason, in 2022, Poznań Zoo provided support for almost 200 wild animals before movement to facilities in other countries. The aim of the study is to identify the under-recognized risk of moving animals that may be infected with zoonotic pathogens, such as Mycobacterium caprae, between countries. Materials and Method. Sections of the heart, lungs, and mesentery of 4-year-old lioness from Ukraine wer

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a thin, non-sporulating, gram-positive rod found worldwide and hosted by many domestic or savage animals, birds, fish, and shell/fish. It is extremely resistant in the external environment (soil, surface waters). Human infection is prevalently related to occupational exposure to sick or infected contaminated animals (anthropozoonosis). Frequently, the disease manifests itself as an acute cellulitis on the skin around the gate of entry. Systemic infection is uncommon, most commonly involving the endocardium or joints. We present a case of subacute E. rhusiopathia

Impalas (Aepyceros melampus) are common African antelope. A retrospective study was conducted of 251 impala cases from game farms, national parks and zoos submitted by veterinarians and pathologists in South Africa (2003-2016). Histopathology slides as well as records of macroscopic lesions and additional diagnostic tests performed were examined. Non-infectious conditions, such as acute pulmonary congestion and oedema, cachexia, traumatic injury and anaesthetic-related mortality were the most common causes of morbidity and mortality. Bacterial sepsis was the most common infectious disease, whi

AIMS: Within the One Health paradigm, infectious disease surveillance have been developed for domestic and wild animals, leaving the role of captive non-domestic populations, especially felids in zoos and circuses, less explored. This study addresses the proximity of these captive animals to urban areas, necessitating focused monitoring for potential zoonotic enteropathogens. The present work aimed to investigate the presence of such zoonotic enteropathogens in faecal samples from captive large felid populations.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 108 faecal samples were collected in three circu

The aim of the present study was to broaden the understanding of parasitism in captive wild mammals in Morocco. For this purpose, an investigation on gastrointestinal and respiratory parasites in African mammals from Rabat Zoo was carried out. A total of 47 fecal samples were collected from 30 species from November 2021 to March 2022 and examined macroscopically and microscopically. Parasites were detected in 21 species at a prevalence of 70%, with a parasite positivity rate of 89% in artiodactyls, 50% in perissodactyls, 67% in both carnivores and primates. No parasitic infection was detected

BACKGROUND: Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the dominant specie of microsporidia which can infect both anthroponotic and zoonotic species. The golden snub-nosed monkey is an endangered primate which can also infect by E. bieneusi. To date, few genetic data on E. bieneusi from golden snub-nosed monkeys has been published. Therefore, to clarify the prevalence and genotypes of E. bieneusi in captive golden snub-nosed monkeys is necessary to assess the potential for zoonotic transmission.
RESULT: We examined 160 golden snub-nosed monkeys from six zoos in four cities in China, using PCR and comparative

The present case report describes a female cotton-top tamarin which was taken over by the Zoo Basel to form a new breeding pair. The animal demonstrated increased marking behavior without any obvious medical reasons, dominant behavior, failure to become pregnant and its external genitals were ambiguous. A disorder of the sexual development (DSD) was suspected by the zoo veterinarians and in a first step, the chromosomes of the monkey were analyzed. Six cell lines with different karyotypes were observed. The two most frequent cell lines had a 46,XX or a 46,XY karyotype which are normal chromoso

A 5-yr-old female black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) was euthanized 11 mo after arrival at the Milwaukee County Zoo (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA) from Glen Rose, Texas (USA) for a severe progressive rear leg lameness of 6-mo duration. Gross necropsy revealed complete rupture of the capital ligament of the left femur with synovitis and osteomyelitis. Multifocal lymphadenopathy with chronic suppurative lymphadenitis of the tracheobronchial, left supramammary, and iliac lymph nodes was present. Granulomatous pneumonia with a focal abscess was also noted. Histologically, fungal elements were seen i

Twelve Galago senegalensis from the Moscow Zoo were presented with papular to nodular (2-11 mm) lesions on the pinnae, containing a white, waxy material. Microscopic examination revealed large numbers of mites consistent with the morphology of Demodex spp. mites. Nine animals were treated with ivermectin, 600 μg/kg/day topically, orally or subcutaneously for 3-10 months, while one remained untreated. All the treated animals achieved clinical remission. The control animal was still affected and died 11 months later due to pneumonia and possible eosinophilic leukaemia. No adverse effects were no

Male infertility in animals are caused by many factors and mostly by genetic mutations. Spontaneously mutated mice have long been used as important animal models for basic medical researches on human genetic diseases and as valuable research tools for discovering new genes and their functions. Spontaneously mutated mice are often detected as random genetic events in zoos or research institutions that house large groups of mice, and they carry various phenotypes, some of which can cause male sterility. This review summarizes the types of spontaneously mutated mice carrying male infertility-rela

Myiasis is the infection caused by a variety of dipterous (fly) larvae in vertebrate's tissue (man and domestic or wild animals). Species of Gasterophilus are obligate parasite of horses, donkeys, zebras, elephants and rhinoceroses. There are records worldwide, but mostly, in tropical and subtropical regions. This case report describes a type of gastric myiasis caused by G. intestinalis in an old lion in a zoo in Sistan, southeast Iran. Myiasis in lions is rarely reported and this is the first report of gastric myiasis in lion.

An outbreak of leptospirosis in seals (Phoca vitulina) in captivity is described. In a zoo in The Netherlands 5 adult seals died within 12 days. At necropsy all animals showed signs of acute septicaemia, consistent with acute leptospirosis. Serological examination of one animal was positive for antibodies against Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae and the serologically closely related serovar Copenhageni. Polymerase chain reaction was positive in one other animal. 8 nutria (Myocastor coypus) were examined, serologically, through bacteriological culture and PCR. 81,8% (9/11) wer

BACKGROUND: French Guiana is home to one of the highest mosquito diversities in the world, with currently 242 species recorded, nearly half of them belonging to the genus Culex. These mosquitoes include vectors of human parasites and viruses, some of which are of significant public health concern. Understanding the host preferences of female Culex mosquitoes is essential but knowledge is still limited. The Zoo of French Guiana was chosen as an experimental site for its constant availability of diverse captive animals and a potential sentinel role for monitoring infectious diseases.
