Ankyloglossia is a controversial topic with no standardized treatment guidelines. A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify children who underwent lingual frenulectomy for speech and language impairment. Impairment severity was recorded pre- and postoperatively as mild, mild to moderate, moderate, moderate to severe, or severe. Variables were tested with chi-square analysis for their statistical relationship to improvements in speech and language. Children with preoperative moderate and moderate-to-severe speech and language impairment attained better speech and language outcomes …

AIM: The two aims of this article were to conduct a scoping review of current knowledge regarding laser treatment of ankyloglossia in children and to report a case of a male paediatric patient with ankyloglossia treated with laser surgery.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was carried out on the following electronic databases: PubMed; Embase; Google Scholar; The Cochrane Library, and Dentistry and Oral Science Source (EBSCO).
RESULTS: The initial search identified 278 references. After the process of title/abstract screening, 61 articles received a full-text reading; finally, 17 art…

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing awareness to ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) in infants, with marked increase in its report in the medical literature. Some reports indicate increase in prevalence. Whether the increase ankyloglossia rate is a real phenomenon or merely reflects increased awareness and reports has to be determined. One explanation for the increasing ankyloglossia rates is the growing trend of breast feeding initiation, often impaired by ankyloglossia, which brings it to medical attention. We propose an alternative hypothetical explanation based on increasing utilization of periconc…

BACKGROUND: Although there is a lack of strong evidence for the association between ankyloglossia in newborns and impaired breastfeeding, screening for ankyloglossia using the Neonatal Tongue Screening Test (NTST) is mandated by law in Brazilian maternities.
AIM: To assess the reliability and validity of the NTST.
DESIGN: cohort study; baseline sample comprised 268 mother-newborn dyads. At follow-up, 169 mothers were contacted by telephone. Interviews with the mothers for data collection were performed up to 48 h and at 1-3 months after childbirth. Trained and calibrated personnel performed …

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown an association between ankyloglossia (tongue tie) and upper-lip ties to breastfeeding difficulties. Treatment is commonly multidisciplinary involving lactation consultants and surgical management with tongue tie and upper lip tie release. There is currently limited data looking at posterior ankyloglossia and upper lip ties.
METHODS: Consecutive patients seen at an ENT outpatient clinic for ankyloglossia and upper-lip ties from May 2014-August 2015 were assessed for an outpatient frenotomy. Breastfeeding outcomes were assessed following the procedure.

The problems of suction in newborns give rise to multiple consequences for both the mother and the newborn. The objective of this paper is to present a case of ankyloglossia ("tongue-tie") and the suction problems that were treated by a multidisciplinary team. The subject is a 17-day-old male patient, with ankyloglossia and suction problems during breastfeeding (pain in the breastfeeding mother, poor weight gain, and long breastfeeds). The patient followed the circuit established in our centre between the services of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Breastfeeding and Speech Therapy and Orofa…

BACKGROUND: Tongue-tie (more formally known as ankyloglossia) is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum, which may restrict the mobility of the tongue tip impairing its ability to fulfil its functions. Ankyloglossia is uncommon, but not rare. Incidence figures reported in the literature vary widely, ranging from 0.02% to 4.8%. Incidences of upto 10.7% have been reported. Since the literature provides no uniformity of information with regard to the incidence of tongue tie. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of tonguetie in general population…

The tongue is an important oral structure that affects speech, position of teeth, periodontal tissue, nutrition, swallowing, nursing, and certain social activities. Ankyloglossia (tongue tie) is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short, thick lingual frenulum which affects movement of tongue. Though the effect of ankyloglossia in general appears to be a minor condition, but a major difference exists concerning the guidelines for tongue-tie division. There are no accepted practical criteria for the management of such condition, and hence this paper aims at bringing all the comp…

The oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndromes (OLHS) represent a group of rare conditions characterized by congenital malformations involving the tongue, mandible, and limbs. In this report, we describe a newborn girl with paralysis of abducens and facial nerves, transverse agenesis of the distal segments of the limbs, micrognathia, cleft lip and palate, and ankyloglossia superior. This observation confirms an overlap between Moebius syndrome and ankyloglossia superior syndrome with severe limb defects. The etiology of the OLHS is not clearly understood. The intriguing link between facial and l…

Purpose: To provide evidence-based recommendations for managing infants with restrictive lingual frenum and breastfeeding difficulties. Methods: Recommendations were informed by 2 recent systematic reviews regarding outcomes such as the diagnostic criteria for ankyloglossia, association of ankyloglossia with feeding difficulties, and evidence for surgical release of the lingual frenum. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach guided consensus on problem prioritization, certainty of evidence, benefit-risk balance, patient values, acceptability, a…

BACKGROUND: Maternal folic acid supplementation is protective against the development of neural tube defects (NTDs) in babies. However, recent public-facing communications have raised concerns about a causal relationship between folic acid supplementation, particularly after the first trimester, and ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) in infants. Non-evidence-based communications are potentially harmful because they could adversely affect adherence to folic acid supplementation, increasing NTD occurrence. This study aimed to review evidence on the relationships between maternal folic acid supplementati…

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a situation where the tongue tip cannot go beyond the mandibular incisor because the frenulum linguae is short. It could affect children's health by interfering with their ability to talk, breast feeding and dental development. The most effective measure to control ankyloglossia is the surgical method. However, which surgical procedure is the best one is still controversial. Thus, this protocol aims to assess the effectiveness of different surgical interventions in children with ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to determine if there are differences in caregiver perception of speech for patients that undergo frenulectomy compared to patients that were not surgically treated.
INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a controversial topic without standardized treatment guidelines. Although there have been several studies suggesting that breastfeeding does improve after frenulectomy, there is a paucity of literature that investigates the relationship between ankyloglossia and speech.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify patients with ankyloglossia. Patient…

OBJECTIVE: Oral cavity anomalies may contribute to breastfeeding problems. The objective of this study was to describe our experience in a high-volume breastfeeding difficulty clinic with a focus on posterior ankyloglossia and upper-lip ties.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients from a dedicated breastfeeding difficulty clinic from January 2014 to December 2014 was performed. Those identified to have ankyloglossia and/or upper-lip ties underwent release procedures. Subjective breastfeeding changes were documented afterwards.
RESULTS: Of the 618 total patients, 290 (47%) had anterior a…

Cleft palate most commonly occurs as a sporadic multifactorial disorder with a clear but difficult to define genetic component. As a semi-dominant disorder, X-linked cleft palate (CPX) provides a useful model to investigate a congenital defect that is little influenced by non-genetic factors. By using an Icelandic kindred, CPX has been localised between DXS1196 and DXS1217 and mapped, in a 3-Mb yeast artificial chromosome contig, at Xq21.3. Markers generated from this physical map have now been used to construct a contig of P1 and bacterial artificial chromosome clones for genomic DNA sequenci

A case of complete median cleft of the lower lip and mandible and bifid tongue with ankyloglossia is presented. Unlike other reported cases of similar disorders, no other abnormalities were present. A satisfactory result was achieved with early surgical correction of both hard- and soft-tissue defects.

Background/Objectives: Ankyloglossia diagnosis and management remain widely debated in dentistry, with variability reported in clinical decision-making and treatment approaches. Limited international evidence exists comparing how dental professionals diagnose and manage this condition in early childhood. This study aimed to compare the knowledge, diagnostic criteria, and clinical management of ankyloglossia among dental professionals in six countries and to assess whether shared diagnostic and management approaches exist for babies (≤6 months) and infants (>6 months). Methods: A multicountry c…
