Dysautonomia and Implications for Anosmia in Long COVID-19 Disease.

Long COVID-19 patients often reported anosmia as one of the predominant persisting symptoms. Recent findings have shown that anosmia is associated with neurological dysregulations. However, the involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which can aggregate all the long COVID-19 neurological symptoms, including anosmia, has not received much attention in the literature. Dysautonomia is characterized by the failure of the activities of components in the ANS. Long COVID-19 anosmia fatigue could result from damage to olfactory sensory neurons, leading to an augmentation in the resistance t

Anosmia and the Need for COVID-19 Screening during the Pandemic.

In this commentary, we briefly summarize the available data from Iran and other countries on the sudden increase in anosmia, hyposmia, and hypogeusia that has coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. Alarmingly, a high proportion of patients with severe COVID-19 had isolated anosmia as the sole initial presenting symptom, which is likely due to the direct neuropathic effect of the virus rather than being secondary to nasal congestion and obstruction. Since isolated anosmia is not yet considered a prerequisite for screening for COVID-19, we wish to raise awareness on the association of anosmia wit

Can symptoms of anosmia and dysgeusia be diagnostic for COVID-19?

OBJECTIVE: Olfactory and taste dysfunction (OTD) is a potential neurological manifestation of coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of symptoms of anosmia and dysgeusia for COVID-19. METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane database, and Google Scholar from 1 June 2020 to 12 June 2020. All studies reporting symptoms of anosmia and dysgeusia in COVID-19-positive patients were included. A total of 23 studies were included in the systematic review. RESULTS: Symptoms of anosmia and dysgeusia were frequent

Delayed Puberty and Anosmia in CHARGE Syndrome: A Case Report.

A 26-year-old female presented to the paediatric clinic at 11 years of age with poor growth. The detection of delayed puberty, anosmia, coloboma and hearing impairment led to a diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome. This was confirmed by a heterogenous de novo pathogenic variant c.6955C >T:p.(Arg2319Cys) detected in the CHD7 gene. Detailed assessment, including olfaction, ophthalmic and auditory examination should be part of the evaluation framework in children with delayed growth and puberty.

The smell of "anxiety": Behavioral modulation by experimental anosmia in zebrafish.

Olfaction is strongly involved in the regulation of fish behavior, including reproductive, defensive, social and migration behaviors. In fish, anosmia (the lack of olfaction) can be induced experimentally, impairing their ability to respond to various olfactory stimuli. Here, we examine the effects of experimental lidocaine-induced anosmia on anxiety-like behavior and whole-body cortisol levels in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). We show that experimentally-induced anosmia reduces anxiolytic-like behavioral effects of fluoxetine and seems to interact with anxiogenic effect of stress also paralle

Does the presence of posttraumatic anosmia mean that you will be disinhibited?

Dispute has surrounded the issue of whether the relationship between anosmia and executive dysfunction in traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be artefactual due to poor ascertainment. Three groups matched for age, gender, education, Full Scale IQ, and the Wechsler Working Memory Index and showing adequate symptom validity were compared: 30 anosmic TBIs (TBI-A) matched for posttraumatic amnesia (PTA) and working memory functioning with 36 nonanosmic TBIs (TBI-NA) and 51 controls. The groups performed the FAS test, the Animal Fluency test, the Stroop Neurological Screening Test (SNST), the Wisconsi

Fungus ball in concha bullosa: a rare case with anosmia.

Concha bullosa is the pneumatization of the concha and is one of the most common variations of the sinonasal anatomy. The histopathological changes caused by the infections which arise from the impaired aeration of conchal cavity are frequently found. Fungus ball of the nasal cavity is an extremely rare, fungal infection with only three cases reported previously. In this paper, we present the fourth fungus ball case which developed within a concha bullosa and presented with anosmia.

Taste perception in kallmann syndrome, a model of congenital anosmia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate taste, a component of flavor perception, using electrogustometry (EG) in patients with congenital anosmia associated with Kallmann syndrome (KS). METHODS: Four patients with KS and 4 control subjects participated in this study. During the first phase of the investigation, the study subjects were administered the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test. During the second phase of the study, EG testing of 2 regions on the anterior tongue tip was performed through an electrode. RESULTS: Patients with KS, as expected, scored in the anosmic range on the Univ

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in the evaluation of traumatic anosmia.

OBJECTIVES: Head trauma is a common cause of anosmia, but diagnosis is typically late, owing to more life-threatening sequelae of the injury. Herein, we describe our workup for a case of traumatic anosmia and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings both at the time of injury and at the 18-month follow-up. METHODS: We present a case report and a review of the literature. RESULTS: A 33-year-old woman presented to our institution with a chief complaint of loss of smell and taste following an occipital blow to her head that occurred when she was hit by a car while riding a bicycle. We pres

Anosmia in association with occupational use of a waterproof coating chemical.

A case of acute permanent anosmia is described in a renovation worker during exposure to a waterproof coating chemical. The chemical consisted of several substances of which four (acetone, acrylates, butyl acetate and carbon disulfide) has been previously reported to induce hyposmia or anosmia in workers. Other aetiologies were clinically excluded but a large arachnoidea cyst in the frontal part of the left temporobasal fossa with possible compression of the left entorhinal cortex. The toxic aetiology of anosmia is supported by the acute onset and the temporal relationship with occupational ex

Is imaging necessary in the evaluation of the patient with an isolated complaint of anosmia?

Imaging studies are often obtained during the evaluation of the patient with an olfactory deficit. The purpose of this article is to describe an investigation that was conducted to assess the effectiveness of imaging studies in determining the etiology of olfactory loss in the patient with an isolated complaint of anosmia and no relevant findings on physical examination, including nasal endoscopy. The author conducted a retrospective review of the records of 20 women and eight men, aged 22 to 71 years (mean: 45), whose duration of anosmia had ranged from 1 month to 2 years (median: 3 mo). Interferon-induced anosmia in a patient with chronic hepatitis C.

We report a patient with chronic active hepatitis C developing acute anosmia during interferon (IFN) therapy. On July 31, he began receiving 6 MU of IFN-alpha daily. On September 26, he failed to smell gas leaking from a gas cooker, so IFN therapy was discontinued. He showed no reaction on a standard olfactory acuity test. As the patient had borderline diabetes, the association of anosmia with impaired glucose tolerance cannot completely be excluded, but his anosmia was probably induced by IFN therapy, since anosmia developed 10 days after the initiation of the IFN therapy, without any deterio

Prognostic significance of anosmia in patients with closed-head trauma.

Among 40 patients who developed total anosmia as a result of closed-head injury, virtually all had major vocational problems during the two or more years after being medically cleared to return to work. None had major motor or sensory deficits, and the majority had above average intelligence and memory. However, most demonstrated psychosocial deficits of a type typically associated with damage to orbital frontal cortex. Vocational outcome for patients with partial anosmia was more variable with only about half having manifest vocational problems.
