Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, is well known in human history as a major cause of disease in domestic and wild animals and as a rare condition in humans. For the last seventy years, anthrax was developed and occasionally stored as an agent of biological weapon arsenal in numerous countries. The incubation period in humans is 1-6 days and the disease may be present as three distinct clinical syndromes: cutaneous, inhalational, and gastrointestinal disease. The major concern in regard of biological warfare is the inhalational form of anthrax, which starts as a febrile flu-li…

The MEK family of protein kinases plays key roles in regulating cellular responses to mitogens as well as environmental stress. Inappropriate activation of these kinases contributes to tumorigenesis. In contrast, anthrax lethal factor, the principal virulence factor of anthrax toxin, has been demonstrated to selectively inactivate MEKs. In this article we will discuss recent advances in our understanding of molecular aspects of the pathogenesis of anthrax, emphasizing the potential role of MEK signalling in this disease, and outline novel strategies to use anthrax lethal toxin in the treatment…

Bacillus anthracis infection can occur in three forms: cutaneous, gastrointestinal and inhalation depending on the mode of infection. Anthrax is a zoonotic disease but the inhalation form can also be used as a biological warfare agent. The recent mail spread outbreak of bioterrorism-related infections in the USA prompted the introduction of specific guidelines by the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Postexposure prophylaxis is indicated to prevent inhalational anthrax, and therapy with ciprofloxacin or doxycycline is recommended for adults and children for 60 days. The same agen…

The recent acts of bioterrorism have raised new questions about this uncommon disease. Clinicians are puzzled as to why some of the victims exposed to Bacillus anthracis spores developed the cutaneous form of the disease and others the inhalational form. Despite these questions, cutaneous anthrax remains relatively simple to treat effectively. The real clinical challenge lies in the diagnosis, especially being able to distinguish it from a spider bite.

The recent occurrence in the USA of deliberate release of virulent Bacillus anthracis in letters sent to three media corporations and to the American senate has led to a great anxiety in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe. Numerous letters have been suspected to contain B. anthracis spores and several have contained powder of different types. In none of the tested letters collected by the Swedish police have we been able to detect anthrax bacilli. Powder containing letters have been tested with either bacterial isolation and/or B. anthracis specific PCR. Anthrax is a disease found naturally in her…

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is an acute bacterial skin disease which may be fatal. Three anthrax vaccines are commercially available but their comparative effectiveness and safety is not clear.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of human anthrax vaccines in healthy adults and children.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Medline, Embase and the reference lists of articles. We handsearched the journal Vaccine and contacted researchers in the field.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised and quasi-randomised trials comparing anthrax vaccines w…
